Religion & Wrestling

Recommended Posts

I'd be interested to hear any thoughts or observations people have on the similarities between pro wrestling and organised religion.

The latest scandal involving the DiBiase family got me thinking about how both art forms are basically about selling ideas to an audience and drawing money.

The US Televangelists who practice the prosperity bible don't even hide their eggregious motivations by encouraging their flock to tithe 10% of their income, even in the middle of a pandemic.

They cut wrestling style promos on the devil, one millionaire televangelist Kenneth Copeland even cut a direct promo on Covid-19 a few weeks back. To communicate in a way that's simple and compelling to a congregation is a skill without a doubt. Takes charisma to tell storys and draw heat, create fear and get over.

Bruce Prichard said that Vince once said to him - if things don't work out with wrestling we'll hire a tent and tour the christianity gimmick from town to town, snake oil salesman style and it basically is the same model as an old fashioned wrestling territory. Keep the mark's coming back for more and take their money.

Depends on your definition of organised religion. C of E, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Shinto...probably have as much in common with gravy as they do with wrestling. Carney's & con artists are just that, whatever brand of crap they're flogging.

Shinto is the best one though, it’s more than just a religion because it’s from Japan, you idiots who grew up with just your rubbish Christianity have been brainwashed into thinking that’s what religion should be. Shinto is too good for you marks.

Yeah it's more the blatant televangelist christianity gimmick which uses a lot of similar tricks to grow their audience and keep them coming back.

The really eggregious millionaire pastors in the bible belt could easily be heel wrestlers or managers.

It's a shame they wasted that gimmick on Bruce Pritchard, who was frankly shite. Watching those old WWF comps on YouTube, Brother Love is an instant skip.

Especially if you're not going to spell it correctly.

It's more accurate to say that the "snake oil salesmen" types and wrestlers are heavily influenced by the travelling carnivals of old. Which isn't a surprise as that's where that style of promotion comes from.

This thread is basically "have you noticed how two carny swindles sound like carny swindles"? Yes. We have.

Also there is an enormous, cavernous, as far as East is from West difference between talking about the stereotype of televangelist conmen and all organised religion.

Eggregious.

Yeah it's those carney traits which are fascinating in both businesses.
