Homeschooling (and keeping kids entertained)

I'm knackered and it's been two days. Give each teacher a massive pay rise now!

It has gone really well to be fair. Every morning has started with Joe Wicks' PE (I popped today when I thought he was going to backflip off the wall), and then we've gone into core learning with phonics, spelling, literacy and maths for an hour, so almost as if that can be 'ticked off', if that makes sense? The school have been good with adding loads to Purple Mash, but the actual folder of work equates to I reckon about a weeks worth of week.

As these subjects should be touched on each day, we've covered off quite a lot already within the folder, and 7yo is working with money (making up amounts with different coins), so a lot of exercises have been based around that.

As 7yo has been learning about space and Tim Peake, we have been writing space diaries about our journeys into space, and I have to say this has gone down really well. We then used this diary to create an animation of it on Purple Mash with her sister, along with a few quizzes on there.

10yo has been working on multiple literacy projects including a couple of books she's writing; a play that we're planning; and yesterday and today was working on 'determiners', something I had forgotten.

Today, me and 7yo sat and did the very first episode of Coffee Break French (I looked at duolingo French on Podbean, but I couldn't find an episode that was basic enough; if anyone has any tips for a French podcast for kids then please tell me as the one I'm using I feel will ramp up the level quite quickly) whilst 10yo did one on Spanish.

Then they finished off the day by creating a restaurant and menu, and pitching it to me Dragons Den Style (complete flop business; they're selling burgers for a £1 ffs), and we all watched another episode of Around The World in 80 Days, complete with a couple of questions to see if they were paying attention.

But yeah, i'm knackered! I think it's mental fatigue than anything else. And obviously I'm used to having my kids, and I know a lot of people have harder situations than I do, so I don't want it to seem as if I'm moaning.

But it's been hard balancing out their work as they're at different ages (ie, today 10yo wouldn't do the French with us as it was really basic and fair enough), and i've been surprised at the speed at which they work!

I suppose as a teacher you're aware of ability more (and I do know my childrens ability too), but for example yesterday I was giving 7yo some of her Maths sheets (missing numbers) and thinking "Those should easily take half an hour" and she was coming up to me after 5 minutes asking what she should do next. And I think that's been the only issue. I can't imagine 30 of them constantly asking "What should I do next?" and being happy whilst you spend 5/10 minutes thinking about it.

But all in all, it's been great. I haven't really worried too much about timings (apart from lunch) as I don't want to make it too rigid and boring for them, but I've really enjoyed it so far, and it has been eye opening.

I've also been collating other things to keep kids busy during this time and have uploaded some items here:

There's a daily Lego challenge calender, ideas for non-screen activities, creative/art activities and others too.

Most of the things I've gathered are from Scottish teacher Facebook and Twitter so if something says First Level on it that's Key Stage 1 in England and Second Level is Key Stage 2.

@Divorced Dad we might have cracked it! I drew a massive chalk clock (definitely a clock) in the garden and tried @Joe Blog idea and made her walk round it, reciting the times. I've also been randomly getting her to tell me the time throughout the day, she's getting much quicker.

Add us to the Joe Wickes crew, been giving them daily spelling tests on various subjects, maths, going through their workbooks from school and occasional Minecraft breaks. Also got my 9 year old on Kingdom Hearts 3, so I'm counting lockdown as a raging success so far.

Knackered, though, I'm having to work from 6:30 to 1pm every day, then homeschooling.

This thread has been awesome, though, it really has.
