I saw just over half and then my copy went glitchy. Will catch it on the big screen in a few weeks. But was really enjoying it
Paid Members Chris B Posted January 13, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted January 13, 2020 Genuinely surprised not to see Jennifer Lopez on there for Hustlers. Slightly less surprised, but no less aggrieved, not to see Lupita Nyong'o on there, who was so good in Us. Otherwise, Christ, The Irishman, Once Upon A Time... and Joker are overrated. It's not been a banner year for film.
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 13, 2020 Author Paid Members Share Posted January 13, 2020 I disagree. There were some fantastic films in 2019. But some as you mentioned were very overrated. Joaquin deserves the oscar for Best Actor (though not seen Marriage Story yet and I do love me some Driver), even though I think the film is bang average. Paid Members Chris B Posted January 13, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted January 13, 2020 He deserves the oscar for most acting, perhaps.
Factotum
Once Upon A Time now favourite to win Best Picture, seems to be picking up steam. Was my film of the year so be good to see. Also nods that releasing a film in July/August might be a smart way of doing it these days rather than have it lost in the crowd. Parasite I found good, but not as great as people have been going on about, but always good to see a film like this nominated in the main category. JOKER shouldn't be on that list for me. Its an OK film with a great central performance. No way Phoenix doesn't win this. It's almost like he's getting it because he should have had it for other stuff (a staple of the Oscars) Adam Sandler absolutely robbed not to be nominated. That was a helluva performance. It's obvious that a lot of people (critics and fans alike) really enjoyed his performance in Joker, and I think any awards he's getting are well deserved. It's not like that year Return of the King got everything just because they felt LOTR deserved a lot, even though it wasn't even the best of the trilogy by a long shot. As I said, its a really good central performance and I always find him a compelling watch. I just think he's been better in other stuff and deserved it more in other years. This is 'his year' though and I'm pleased.
Members SuperBacon
Whenever the Oscars roll around, I’m always reminded of what Harvey Keitel said when Scorsese didn’t win in 1991: “Marty got what he deserved, exclusion from the mediocrity.”
Keith Houchen
Except Costner won it that year and Big Kev is fucking ace, so bollocks.

Keith Houchen
He is so ace that he knew he was a shoe in for it but because he’d won one he quietly asked others not to vote for him so someone else could win. Something I will say I did when I win fuck all in this years awards.
Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted January 13, 2020 Awards Moderator Share Posted January 13, 2020 John Williams is the most Oscar-nominated person ever, 53 nominations with five wins across seven decades. Just an incredible body of work.
Paid Members chokeout Posted January 13, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted January 13, 2020 (edited) No massive surprises there. Joker will probably win a bunch that it doesn't really deserve. As long as the greatest living cinematographer Roger Deakins wins, and Knives Out or Parasite gets the screenplay nod I don't care. I'm looking forward to some good old fashioned fan-boy complaining because Robert Downey Jr didn't get shortlisted for playing Iron Man (edit: which in no way, shape or form does he deserve) Edited January 13, 2020 by chokeout
