To clarify:

Burnham's request of £90 million was the amount needed to give everyone who can't work the same payments they got under the original furlough scheme.

The government offer to Manchester was the same amount per head that Lancashire and Liverpool agreed to, which was the result of negotiation rather than being based on an objective criteria.

Finally, a megathread we can all get behind.

It's this kind of thought process that has seen the likes of Boris get to where they are. I recall saying in the Brexit thread that I believed he'd win this leadership contest, and many dismissed the

And then did they pull the 60m on the table because Burnham wouldn’t kowtow and gave 22m as a fuck you?

As far as I can tell, the £22 million is completely separate and is earmarked for councils to run a local track and trace.

The communities secretary awarded his own Newark constituency 3 mil more than Greater Manchester got.

Technically that's fake news. Since the 25 million is a completely separate thing that pre-dates COVID-19. But it does put the amount offered to Greater Manchester into a rather grim perspective.

If the Tories had offered an appropriate financial package in the first place there wouldn't have been a lengthy standoff over money.

I said as much five days ago, that details like this should have been sorted out before we even came out of the first lockdown.

At the moment, to use his own phrase from the Brexit fiasco, Johnson is proving to be an expert at "dither and delay". You didn't need to be Mystic Meg to know there was going to be a second wave of infections, since it was being talked about long before we even came out of the first lockdown. So why do we seemingly have no plans whatsoever? Plans for localised lockdowns and appropriate financial aid for affected areas should have been decided on ages ago. It's pretty straightforward, r goes above 1, take immediate action. No protracted discussions and negotiations over several days letting things get worse, just get on with it.

However this doesn't change the fact that Andy Burnham isn't some knight in shining armour in all this. The only reason not to agree to an immediate increase to tier 3 is that he knew it would take away any leverage he had. So he's perfectly willing to sacrifice the lives of many people while arguing about money.

That's a fucking shitty accusation.

It's a straightforward fact. For days and days Burnham has resisted inceasing to tier 3 until he got the money he wanted. Why not go to tier 3 immediately and sort out the money after?

Have you ever negotiated anything? That's not the way to get what people need.

Andy Burnham didn't make this decision unilaterally either, maybe read up about it or something.

Thanks for confirming my point. The longer the delay in implementing tier 3 restrictions, the more people get sick, and the more people die. I'm sorry, but the lives of people shouldn't be used as bargaining chips. Burnham could have saved lives and gone to tier 3 straight away.

They're not using lives as bargaining chips, he and the councillors that make up the GM region are trying to protect jobs, families and children. The big questions should be why the government aren't just making the decision if the situation is so grave (Answer: it's because they want other suckers to take the rap) and why they're having to fight over a few million quid to protect communities while they can spunk 12 billion on spreadsheet systems that don't work.

We have a 12 billion track and trace system which doesn't work from a company that can't do the task. Spent £50m on PPE which was inadequette, Have a PM who spent £53m on a bridge that never got started. But you have more of an issue that a mayor tried to make sure they were given an extra £5m to make sure they could try and help themselves? Just remember, this money isn't going to Burnham himself, it's going to the people of Manchester. I think you've got him confused with a Tory.

Or he believes more people will be harmed if the support package is insufficient, and if he goes straight to t3 then he has no ability to get the support required?

This. If he went straight to Tier 3, what bargaining power had he got to get the extra funds he needs? They‚Äôd just tell him calm down dear,¬†ask ‚Äúwhat would Churchill do?‚ÄĚ and ‚Äúsomething something Bulldog Spirit‚ÄĚ
