Could have been a world champion...

A fair cop RR. Though I doubt Sean Morley at his peak time in the WWE would have been able to easily shrug off the porn actor gimmick.

Bulldog would’ve never been champion. Could wrestle a decent match and had big muscles, but that was all he had, He could never be trusted in that spot even if he was able. He wouldn’t have even been allowed in the WWE in the everybody-gets-a-turn era, because the wellness policy has been around during that whole time. An absolute fucking mess of a man, and a worse promo than Khali but without the freak appeal.

Wade Barrett for me. He should definitely got the world title during the height of the the Nexus. He was also massively over with the Bad News Barrett gimmick which they just dropped and threw him into the heatless League of Nations.

I liked Bad News Barrett as well, he was far more interesting once he got rid of the coat but it was purely a midcard gimmick and I'm not sure how he could have worked that into a world title run.

Whenever I got a new wrestling game, I'd jump into the main career mode and always chose a mid-carder who I thought should be champ.

Ken Shamrock won all the belts in Warzone. I took Val Venis to the top in WWF Attitude. X-Pac became the big dog in Smackdown. Jeff Hardy became a multiple time world champ in Smackdown 2 (and that one came true!). RVD won both the World and WWE championships in Smackdown 4 (that one also came true...kinda). Shetlon Benjamin was my man in Smackdown 5 and Rhyno became a legend in the first Smackdown vs RAW.

Of all of them, Venis and Shamrock should've became champ in real life along with Hardy and RVD. Shamrock especially.

I'm one of those people who can never see anyone reaching main event level until they're there are actually established for a while.

Crush in 1993 will always be my standout though. I know his career petered out, but with the right push he could have been there are thereabouts and size that didn't seem to be dependant on the 'roids.

Something I always wondered: given that they had him keep the name, was Kona Crush intended to be perceived as the same guy from Demolition, and that he was just back from a bit of an absence with a change in image? Because on the one hand, they never really made reference to it, but on the other, they must've known the fans who knew Demolition would probably recognise him?

(Actually, another: where's the name "Kona" Crush come from? I never heard him referred to as that, and the first time I ever even knew about that name was when I first joined here.)

Luke Harper. I know they kind of missed the boat a few years ago but he has/had the presence, look & is quite solid in the ring too.

You wouldn't even have to really change his Wyatt Family character either, he genuinely looks scary and menacing, much more than the big lumps they try and push every so often.

It was because he was billed as being from Kona in Hawaii, and they played that into the character

He went overboard with the Hawaiin accent and bright colours, and had him doing his vignettes on the beach, etc, like this one

His mic skills are pretty top notch too. Perhaps he was hurt by the influx of WCW wrestlers coming in, perhaps the porn star gimmick tainted him. I don’t know, but I do believe there’s more to Val than we got.

Back when I was one of the virgins, Val was a guy I always thought should ditch the gimmick and get serious. Then he did. And I realised I was a fucking idiot. Even wth a good gimmick, he was still seriously average. And in hindsight, even more so.

I really don't buy Venis as champion in any form no matter what gimmick. He was a solid worker but was never going to be a main event talent. Same as Dibiase, Hennig, Owen Hart and many others.

Dibiase was a main event talent. In more than one place. He was never going to be a guy WWE built around given their love of a babyface Champion but he was a top level heel. Given the plan was for him to have a run in 1988, they agree. Hennig too until the novelty of Hogan and Warrior beating him every time wore off.

Owen was a lovely little heel in 1994. I think he's a fine answer to this question in a hypothetical sense. Had he lived, I'm absolutely certain he would have had a run post brand split in 2002. He's have only been 37 with all his experience and shitloads of talent to work with. With his style, he could have gone on another decade easily. Same as Bret if he hadn't had his head kicked in.

My two answers for this are almost always X-Pac and Ken Shamrock. If either of them had come along a decade (or two, Christ I’m old) later, X-Pac with his ‘99 level of overness and Shamrock with his legit aura, they’d definitely have been champions.

I could’ve seen Shamrock in that title mix on Smackdown around 2002/03 when it was switching between Lesnar and Angle. He’d have been a natural opponent for both of them and would’ve probably had some top matches with Benoit and Guerrero around that time.

X-Pac was mega over for a period in 98-99, wasn’t he? Did he ever even get a run with the IC belt?

Shamrock is a great answer. Any other time and/or place and I think he'd have been huge. He was absolutely brilliant very quickly.

Pac was amazing right from the off as The Kid and later on as X-Pac. You're right, a few years later and he would have been a big star. Though his inability to talk for shit when he was the Kid would have held him back.

Does anyone else think Jerry Lawler could have been WWF champion?

Definitely. He could be anything, anywhere. He's about the best all-rounder there has ever been. Probably the best time though was when he was in trouble for Maggie Thatchering.

I'm not sure how someone with his size and ability never did get a run in the era when every fucker did.

He got several shots in 1995 and 1996 and business was always dreadful with him challenging. He had a ceiling and hit it. He was great at times and genuinely very fun at others but I'd agree with all of the above.

I think it was the Survivor Series match, where if Cena loses he had to leave WWE....that night I really felt they dropped the ball by not having Wade Barret win the title, everything felt it was right, it was truly the time to create a new main event heel, it was truly the time to give The UK it's first World Champion, EVERYTHING was in place.

I strongly disagree here based purely on his booking; Consistent main event guy for both WWE and WCW, held EVERY belt in the E except the big one, was signed with WCW with the promise of his title run.

The reason he never become champ was because off a)his personal problems and b)Shawn Micheals.

When you look at Crush sorta Wrestlemania 9 era its amazing to think this man's career never went anywhere, he literally had EVERYTHING, He looks the sort of guy Vince would push to the moon, he looks like Hogan with hair!

The highlight of his career was a brief spell where Kronic were considered 'cool'.

I would love a Something to wrestle about him, although I doubt they could fill 2 hours.
