Paid Members stumobir Posted August 8, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted August 8, 2019 Looks like it’s more or less a done deal for my beloved Kieran Tierney to move on, don’t think we’ve had a player since Larsson who’s made such a strong connection with the fans. I’m half expecting some cringe inducing tribute by the Green Brigade this weekend. To be fair, it was always going to happen and this seems like the right time. Arsenal have gotten themselves a great player for a decent price in this market, granted fees are all but arbitrary. He’s got the potential to be one of the best full backs in the league with a bit of big game experience. Still a bit raw but what he lacks in experience he makes up for in energy and commitment.
Paid Members PunkStep Posted August 8, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted August 8, 2019 (edited) I bet Jermaine Jenas did his brilliant crying face when he saw Pornstein report that the Dybala deal was off. That's the second best thing of the week. The best thing is Neil Custis getting all bitter and twisted at all the top British journos being poached by The Athletic and he didn't get the call.  Edit: Jenas related  Just look at his face! If you press your face to the screen you can hear The Sound of Silence playing Edited August 8, 2019 by PunkStep

Why potentially disrupt the harmony of what you have for someone you don’t particularly need? PunkStep pretty much summarised it, but yeah, I wasn't expecting us to go out and throw money around on marquee signings, it's not the way I don't think Klopp's ever done things, I just thought coming off the back of a Champions League win, we'd be doing more to properly establish ourselves back amongst the very top teams as opposed to sticking with what we've got and hoping we get through another season at the same level. It's not so much adding more signings as it is just fine-tuning the finer details of our squad. We were incredibly lucky last year that most of our key players stayed fit nearly the whole way through the season. I think the only injury problem we had that lasted more than a few weeks was when Gomez broke his leg against Burnley. We might not be that fortunate this year. We've got 6 competitions to play in, and as much depth as we've acquired in midfield, our attacking and full-back options are pretty thin on the ground if we make extended runs in those competitions, and that's without even taking into account the potential for injuries with that schedule where I'll presume we'll be rotating. I love Origi to bits, but he's completely ineffective for us when he's out wide, and behind Mane and Salah he's our next choice for a winger. Brewster's meant to be the business, but he hasn't played a second of Premier League football yet. It's why I was surprised to see Wilson go out on loan for the season, because despite the fact I'm sure he'll get more first-team chances with them, it leaves us lacking another attacking option. Robertson and Trent are fantastic players, but if either of those two go down it's either Milner or Larouci/Hoever as our options. Again with Milner, he's an absolutely great player to have in the squad but the last time I remember him playing full-back was when we went to Old Trafford and an injured Rashford was still giving him bounds of trouble. I understand the idea of giving the young players the chance, but to me it feels like a really significant drop from our starting eleven to the reserve options in some areas. Like if we kept Moreno, for instance, he'd be the nice middle ground between our starter in Robertson, and the prospect in Larouci. Now it feels like at some point during the season, we're going to have to throw these young players straight into the deep end. And if it works? Brilliant. If not, then questions are going to be asked about why it wasn't addressed during Summer. You compare it to City, which is what we need to be doing if we want to be at their level, and they're constantly trying to build on their own success. Walker and Fernandinho are hardly finished, but they've brought in two younger, hungry players who suit their style and will either take their places in the first team, or push them to work harder to keep them. We might not have access to their level of finances, but it's the mindset and intent to constantly strive to improve that's going to keep them winning. Mind you, it's Klopp. I'm sure he knows what he's doing and all faith will be restored soon. On a side note, I can't wait to watch Arsenal this season. Pepe, Lacazette and Aubameyang up front with Luiz and Mustafi at the back. All their games are going to end up 6-4. Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao, Champions League, Super Cup and the Club World Championship. Alright, maybe not the Super Cup, but the point still stands that we've got a lot of games next season with not the biggest squad. I'm pretty sure that the Club World Cup happening in December again means we've got an even more congested fixture list to look forward to when we get back from it. It's not so much the 2 games we play when we away, but the potential knock-on effect it has in terms of our Premier League schedule.
