RIDDUM_N_STYLE
Not going to leap to JP’s defence as he’s been largely awful for us for a while now, problem is, and has been since Tim Howard’s last couple of years, that we’ve never had a good enough back up keeper to challenge. We currently have Stekelenburg as back up who was Koeman’s first signing but hasn’t played a first team game since 2017, Lossl who we shipped back to Huddersfield on loan in January having not played him even in cup games since he joined in the summer and Virginia who we signed from Arsenal’s reserves, sent him to Reading on loan who promptly sent him back after only 2 games in 6 months

How can that be the problem? How many clubs are blessed with having a back-up keeper good enough to really challenge the first choice spot? There was a fascination about 6 years ago when all the big clubs in Europe decided to have two excellent keepers on their books, but that seems to have mostly gone away. Seaman was decent but had a shorter spell, then we’ve had David James, Rob Green, Paul Robinson, Joe Hart and Jordan Pickford all with spells as England’s number 1. Of all of them, I honestly though Hart was due for greatness. His fall from the top has to be one of the most dramatic in recent memory. That said, few other players keep the same position in the England team for their entire career, so it should be normal for new keepers to come in. Just because Pickford’s been number one for a few years is no reason not to drop him and play other, better and more in-form goalies. David Seaman is about 3 tiers above those other losers. The only reason he had a shorter spell was due to us picking ham and Eggers over him for a few years.  Punkstep beat me to that some what. Mind you, he's gone on to do alright for himself in Germany, somehow. I think the problem with Pickford is over-confidence. You need a certain arrogance as a 'keeper and that's got him a long way but I just don't think he's as capable of certain things as he thinks he is. He's a bread and butter keeper. He's not a footballer. Same as Joe Hart. Just concentrate, get the basics right and stop trying to be the other lads. We also need to accept that keepers who don't make any mistakes are few and far between. De Gea has made a shitload, even Ederson has made a few. Alisson hasn't really but he's missed half the season and is also the best protected keeper in the league (as long as Joe Gomez is playing and not Lovren). Paid Members PunkStep Posted March 2, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted March 2, 2020 Allison made a few high profile 'playing it out from the back' errors not long after he joined Liverpool as well, which as you can imagine drew mouth-frothing criticism from the likes of Souness who can't comprehend a keeper just smashing it upfield and hoping for the best. Paid Members tiger_rick Posted March 2, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted March 2, 2020 Sky put up a "Who should be England's keeper at the Euros?" poll with options Pickford, Pope and Henderson. That's fucking terrifying. Shows how subjective it is too because the replies are full of Forster and Ramsdale shouts. Someone even says Ben Foster which isn't the worst shout. Henderson is winning. He's a cracking young goalie but he's not even played for England yet. It's a completely different pressure. He might take to it, he might not. Who knows? but hard to champion him as #1 before he's saved a shot. Always the same with football fans. Whoever isn't playing is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and the brain mushier.

Paid Members CleetusVanDamme Posted March 3, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted March 3, 2020 Disgusting from Klopp not to stick with the U12 side that got him to this stage, while he was off holidaying. He's just buried more young talent than Ian Brady! Hope they lose now.
Paid Members PunkStep Posted March 3, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted March 3, 2020 Kiko Casilla's excuse for racially abusing a black player: Casilla, who denied the charge, said he only learned of the word's "existence and meaning" when interviewed about the matter almost a month later. He said he had "learned relatively little English" since his move to Leeds in January 2019 and "generally uses an interpreter to hold a conversation with an English speaker". He called him a 'fucking n*gger'. Imagine thinking that excuse would wash.
