Romance angles

Since it's Valentine's Day ... what are the best and worst (on-screen) wrestling love stories?

Are you a fan of the classics like Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth, with that reunion at WrestleMania VII? Does the late-Attitude love of Matt Hardy and Lita float your boat? Or is your favourite the correct answer of Spike Dudley and Molly Holly?

Do you like the long-term relationships we've seen, like the McMahon-Helmsley marriage that turned into the Authority and is still going strong so many years later? Or do your love tastes burn bright and fast like Dawn Marie and Al Wilson, Eddie Guerrero and Chyna or Noam Dar and Alicia Fox?

Is it better when they're a real couple, like Sable and Marc Mero, Goldust and Marlena or Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae, or do you just like the really shite thrown together ones like Theodore Long and Krystal Marshall, or Vickie Guerrero and Edge?

Love stories and wrestling. It's an odd match but it's something they keep going back to. Which wrestling wedding are you watching this Valentine's evening? And which current pair do you want to see get together on-screen?

Nobody better disagree with me on Spike and Molly. Their love was pure and true and strong.

Sensational Sherri and Col. Robert Parker all the way. Just a completely, knowingly, fucking bonkers angle, played completely straight by two of the most consistently entertaining performers in WCW at the time.

This is actually the worst "storyline" relationship of all time because the presentation on TV, if you actually pay attention, has been a dreadful mess of the storyline version and real life with no consistency. They had their daterape wedding, Steph got Stockholm Syndrome and started going with it, they had an acrimonious split that actually involved physical violence to each other, later on into 2002 when both were babyfaces had a forced level of "ex banter" when they were on TV.... then years later were just presented as a happily married couple for no other reason than we're not idiots and know they're a couple in real life so they couldn't be bothered writing storylines to contradict that anymore.

I'm currently rewatching Raw and SD from 2000 and the Eddie/Chyna story is absolutely marvellous. Start off as a devious heel couple but Eddie is so much fun and they have great chemistry they pretty quickly turn face. The they throw in the IC title and Eddie's jealousy and true nature starts to show. The fans go apeshit for his proposal. They go even more apeshit when GTV shows him having a threesome in the shower with two ho's. Chyna plays her role extremely well and the fans love her, but Eddie is just a revelation, playing so many different angles to his character exceptionally. It's fantastic viewing and probably works better than the Triple H/Kurt/Steph triangle which is better remembered and going on at the same time.

Big fan of the Spike Dudley/Molly Holly relationship. Incredibly wholesome and the warring families added a great touch of Romeo & Juliet to the proceedings. Spike ripping up Austin's petition (to get himself out of the Benoit/Jericho triple threat match at KOTR '01) when he insulted Molly was a fantastic bit of business.

Not strong enough.

The Jericho/Trish Stratus storyline was great. A shame it fizzled out after Wrestlemania, but it had worked really well as a slightly more ambitious story than they usually told at that point.

Mania itself was a superb twist, what followed was disappointing but everything to that point was surprisingly well executed. The intergender tag at Armageddon was so ahead of its time, its time hasn't happened yet, and Jericho was excellent in portraying his conflict.

My favourite part by far being Spike challenging Austin to a title match and Austin screaming "YOU AIN'T GETTIN' NO TITLE SHOT, YA LITTLE BASTARD!".

The worst is definitely the Kane/Lita/Matt rape and pregnancy story which led to Matt getting injured, them not knowing what to do, having Lita fall in love with her rapist, Gene Snitsky killing her baby, then the Edge thing happened and she eventually turns heel on her rapist and then Matt Hardy comes back and all that bullshit happens. Bloody hell.
