One more thing I'd add in the decision of 6mo or a year. The first few months are really fucking difficult, and although it's a magical wonder of nature and all that, you don't really get that much back in the way of interaction with your kid. So yeah, she might be crawling up the walls at the four month mark, but she'll be coming up on six months and really wishing she had more time. The leaps in development that happens around then are major.

And for your part if you're anything like me even though you're at work you'll be really happy knowing your kid is at home with their mum instead of at nursery / with a childminder.
