That post-match promo at Rumble '92 is his best work. Coming up with "put that cigarette out" to make it appear there was a crowd is genius.

I didn't like some of his stuff in WCW post nWo where he'd be a bit pushy when everyone else was cowering. In fact, he was often a bit above his station in WCW but the lack of direction there porbably didn't help.

Definitely one of those guys along with Heenan who seemed to make wrestling more "real" and more of a large business with the quality of their presentation.  As others have said, those two moving to WCW made it feel like the big time.

Considering he's looked 70 since the 80s, it's surprising he was only 76.  Not a bad age though for a guy who was liked a drink as much as he did.

His WCW run was always hilarious for how he came across like Partridge trying to get a free Rover deal on his Christmas special, when shilling his hotline every 5 minutes. What a man, though. An unbelievable run as the king of wrestling announcers. AWA, WWF and WCW. Pretty much looked the same for about 40 years and couldnt be touched. How can there be anyone better than Mean Gene? The fact he looked like a shifty little stooge reporter was one of the best things about him. He just wanted to get the scoop, folks.

I imagine scant obit inches will be given up for his late-WCW gimmick of The Big Boob Liker.

One of the great characters in a couple of huge eras that had so many of them. No one will come close to matching what he had.

Gene with a proper talker with the ability to play off was something magic. Getting a great balance between humour and serious. Definitely check out some of his AWA stuff, particularly with Da Crusher. Crusher was fair dipped in greatness, like, but Gene did wonders with him.

The greatest at pretty much everything he did. The greatest interviewer, the greatest presenter, the greatest shill man and one hell of a showman when given the opportunity. Nobody comes remotely close, a bona fide legend. RIP
