Yeah, the BBC should absolutely be producing YouTube-esque content.

I do worry about YouTube in a lot of ways, because there's very little in the way of quality control. Kids' TV, especially on a public service broadcaster, has a lot of care and attention go into it to make sure it's appealing in all the right ways, but also educational, and relies at least somewhat on theories of child development and what's appropriate for the age.

Some random producing stuff on YouTube has nothing like that going into it (before you even get into the more overtly problematic aspects of the platform), so kids watching YouTube over purpose-designed kids' TV could be missing out on all sorts. Someone like CBBC producing content that mimics the presentation of YouTube, but still hits all the right bullet points, should be a priority, IMO.

That's a fair point. My kids picked up loads from Cbeebies when they were very small and it helped with counting, recognising numbers and letters and lots of other things. Now they go to school, they watch TV, or YouTube more precisely, just to absorb junk and I don't mind that. But I think it's a really good point about the QA provided by the Beeb. Them doing YT type shows in with their other stuff is the answer.

The YouTube kids app is fucked, the way the algorithms work you end up with a millions of subs and views making a shitload of cash by putting in words that get the videos boosted to the front page. The videos themselves are poorly thought out trash using kids toys and other peoples IP without consent to make a dirty buck. I mean look at this shit.

never mind the 2 billions views on this bollocks.

YouTube people have definitely passed me by. As I've said before a friend of mines son is friends with Caspar Lee. Apparently he is a YouTuber, I've not really heard of him. He's had a movie out apparently. I genuinely wouldn't know him if I fell over him.

Isn't the trick to this YouTube gimmick to have money already in the family. I've seen pictures of my friends son with Caspar and his family at Royal Ascot this year just gone. His family didn't look short of a few quid.

My daughter loves that channel. She gets on my tits. Such an irritating voice and bursts into song all the time. There's a reason kids love it though. In the same way they love playing with their toys with their older siblings or parents. They love people who do daft things with them and bring toys to life.

There are the top 10 most popular YouTubers (according to Google and Thrill List)

PewDiePie. Subscribers: 69.3 million

Dude Perfect. Subscribers: 36.1 million

HolaSoyGerman. Subscribers: 34.8 million

whinderssonnunes. Subscribers: 32.3 million

elrubiusOMG. Subscribers: 31.97 million

Fernanfloo. Subscribers: 30.3 million

JuegaGerman   Subscribers: 30.2 million

Felipe Neto   Subscribers: 27 million

VEGETTA777   Subscribers: 24.5 million

VanossGaming   Subscribers: 23.8 million

Which will all be blown out of the water by Ryan’s Toy Review. He’s a 7 year old kid who does toy reviews. In 2018 he made $22 mil. That’s in 1 year.

The only ones I watch who I know the names of are:

Polecat - Does GTA V scenarios called department of justice. An online community with modded GTA V. They sim the concept real life to an extent. Full police force, baddies, 7/11 owners etc. Different scenario each episode. They’ve done a really, really good job of having a large community, who follow the rules of their game, with open ended storylines. It’s better than it sounds.

Phil DeFranco - I wanted a news outlet let informed me what’s going on, that’s informative and well researched. Can’t be arsed with his shilling of merch, but fair play I suppose. I’ve tried several news source shows and this one gives a good overall scope of shit in 15 mins. Works for me.

Ashens - I still find his reviews humorous. Shame Barshens has ended this year.

Vintage Beef - I really enjoyed his play through of GTA 5 online, Conan & Ark. However, can’t be arsed with his current games so I’ve stopped watching.

Theres a couple of other gamers but I can’t rsmember their names.

I ran a retro game section at a massive Minecraft event last summer. 10 YouTube minecraft guests/players were on a big stage. 700 kids convinced their parents to bring them to it. The Youtubers were all under 25, easily. They got paid to attend, travel and accommodation. I didn’t have the foggiest.

Big fan of Barshens. The extended crew are all fantastic and it's a downer that it never really took off like it should've. They clearly have some resentment towards YouTube and you can't blame them. Any idea what the new format will be? I'm assuming it's a glorified podcast.

I became aware of Ashens after buying his "Terrible Old Games You've Probably Never Heard Of" book. I'm a sucker for retro gaming content, especially old British home computing stuff, and picked up the book in Forbidden Planet because it looked fun. I was reading it while waiting to meet someone for coffee, she saw it and said, "Oh, I love Ashens!", and I had absolutely no idea what she was on about. Still never watched a single second of his stuff.

I love Ryan. I genuinely enjoy watching his videos with the kids. His Mum is a bit annoying though.

Ryan is an odd one, he is 7 but acts like a 4-5 yr old, I don't know if put on for the show since it's aimed at younger children or if he's genuinely like that because he doesn't socialise with kids his own age; his parents are clearly super pushy and using him to make their/his fortune. Both parents on screen are unbearable as well.

Both of my girls watch youtube more than regular TV, it's just the way things are going now.

I really should watch a lot more YouTuber stuff really - a big part of my MA was in Cybercultures, but stuff's moved on a lot in the seven years since then. From a cultural studies and creative industries perspective, it's fascinating. The creation and signification of meaning is the essence of the academic definition of culture, and to see where it's changed and where it's stayed the same is always worth looking at.

Problem is there's just so much stuff to consume these days: books, music, TV, film, art, online - there's just so much. Difficult to know where to start.

I believe so. I know Sharticles is likely to continue in some form. Also, Stu is finishing off another film at the moment. I believe he’s planing another book soon too. He’s still getting between 120k to 220k views on his vids. Him eating out of date food still seems to get the highest numbers.

That may as well be in Mandarin for all I get out of it.

Chalk me up for not understanding YouTube. I just liked it when I could watch WWE matches before the Network.

Still loads of old episodes of Superstars and early 90s B shows up on there. I'll always go to YT out of habit when looking for an easy watch. Unless I'm thinking of buying something or cooking something, I never watch any "original" content. Apart from that Karate Kid sequel.

I guess the issue with the BBC producing Youtube-like content for kids (which I agree, they should be doing) is whether their target audience would actually watch it if it wasn't on YouTube.

And if the BBC put it all on YouTube, then anyone can watch it, for free and without needing the licence, and then you're into a whole other thing.
