It was funny, but that's not the same thing as being a comedy act. Jericho wasn't booked as a joke. It's like saying The Rock was a comedy act.

That's not to say there's not merit in what you're saying - is Jericho the big star that AEW needs him to be? Probably not. Is he a big enough name to draw in the mythical "lapsed fan" market and bring back countless Attitude Era viewers and casual fans? Not on his own, but he's certainly going to help as part of a larger roster. And, crucially, he'll have more clout than the Young Bucks or Cody Rhodes in reaching out to broadcasters and sponsors.

Hopefully what we see between now and the first show is more announcements of working relationships and collaboration with other companies. The roster thus far is underwhelming, and you have to hope those aren't the "big guns" and they have something else up their sleeve. But the state of wrestling in 2019 is torn between more companies trying to tie wrestlers down to exclusive contracts, and between more companies being open to working together. With WWE, ROH, NJPW and, to a lesser extent, Impact all in the position to offer big money contracts, AEW need to tap into areas/promotions with a lot of buzz and work together with those companies before their stars get snapped up elsewhere.Ā

I think they're on to a winner working with Dragon Gate and OWE - Dragon Gate feel like a very self-contained universe, with their own style, wrestlers not working that much elsewhere, and hasn't crossed over into Western consciousness the way NJPW has, but with PAC returning recently, it's really the best time to introduce them to a global audience. And some of the OWE lads have so much potential, and so little presence on the global scene, that they'll be seen as "AEW guys" by and large, and I honestly think they have the potential for the next evolution in wrestling styles right there - Zhao Yilong will beĀ hugeĀ if they showcase him correctly.

If they can work out working relationships with promotions in the US, Europe and Mexico, picking up those who aren't already in bed with WWE or NJPW, that has to be the best approach for them. But, again, does it give them stars of a level to attract anyone but the existing wrestling fanbase? Probably not.

Exactly. It's utter nonsense to refer to his last run as 'midcard comedy act' He was pretty much the focus of RAW for much of his last run

Interesting times. Agree that the OWE link is the underrated diamond of the announcements, that will help theĀ first impressions a great deal come showtime.Ā The Jericho signing is clearly the biggest of the lot, really felt like a Lex Luger on Nitro moment - more of a statement signing that not only are they putting the money in, but somebody who is a genuine star and has options is choosing to be here. That alone isn't going to make the big difference necessarily, but throughout the industry it says a lot, which has a knock-on effect that could pay dividends.

Not sure I buy the Turner TV deal story yet. Last word was two TV deals are on the table, and they are implied to be pretty good ones just from the vibe of what Meltzer is saying - that the production values will need to be top-notch to live up to the stations level, and that the television industry opened their eyes to the possibilities of a wrestling promotion that looks the business when WWE got so much for their rights deal.

The biggest piece of this puzzle is how this goes beyond an online phenomenon amongst niche fans to being a genuine TV property that can pull some casual fans. A great TV deal is one thing, but they'll need to market this thing to high heaven in the real world.

Given how the Bucks especially have self promoted themselves to this point, giving them money and some proper advertising teams, I donā€™t see that being a big issueĀ

addĀ in cross promotional links to Fulham and JacksonvilleĀ jaguars , they have good options there to get their names outĀ

With live attendance going down the pan WWE still pull this off.

Ā

Mixed messages, but there have been comments that guys in AEW shirts were thrown out or denied entry for being disruptive, not for the T-shirts, which is usually the way with this kind of story. Though there does seem to be some evidence that they were just kicking out people in the "wrong" shirt, the fact that even the people complaining acknowledged thatĀ someĀ people were allowed in wearing AEW shirts makes me lean toward the former.

Can someone post a list of what was actually announced? Ā Do they have a confirmed TV deal? Ā TV is everything. Ā I can't pick out from the live chat here what is true and what was Ian doing a Cody St Mark.

Nothing much actually announced beyond the Double or Nothing PPV (May 25th in Las Vegas) and some members of the roster. Cody Rhodes and the Young Bucks who are also all Executive Vice President, Brandi Rhodes is Chief Brand Officer, Hangman Page, Joey Janela, Frankie Kazarian, Christopher Daniels, Scorpio Sky, Dr. Britt Baker, Maxwell J Friedman, Penelope Ford, PAC/Neville and Chris Jericho.

On a slightly related note, how did "All In" do in regards to PPV buys?

Meltzer reckons it did 20,000 buys online but he'd heard no numbers from traditional sales but reckons that it's probably not a great amount otherwise they'd be telling.
