Right, let's do this. Here's ten records I really dug in 2018, in no order.

  • Deafheaven - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
  • Idles - Joy As An Act Of Resistance
  • Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts
  • Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
  • Culture Abuse - Bay Dream
  • Mount Erie - Now Only
  • Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers - Brought To Rot
  • Mitski - Be The Cowboy
  • Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino
  • Marmozets - Knowing What You Know Now

I'm usually a big supporter of Deafheaven but that album didn't grab me at all, I Have Fought Against It, but I Can't Any Longer by The Body is easily my "hipster metal" AOTY if you can even classify it as metal at all. Their collab with Uniform is excellent too, by far the best thing Uniform have put out before.

Most of them can get moved about, in truth. Although I've completely fallen in love with serpentwithfeet's work, so I doubt he's moving from 1.

10, Johnny Marr - Call The Comet

9, Vessel - Queen of Golden Dogs

8, Jon Hopkins - Singularity

7, Beach House - 7

6, Snail Mail - Lush

5, Kamasi Washington - Heaven and Earth

4, Pablo's Eye - Spring Break

3, Virginia Wing - Ecstatic Arrow

2, SOPHIE - Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides

1, serpentwithfeet - Soil

Other good ones I've enjoyed:

Julie Holter - Aviary

DREAMS - No One Defeats Us

The Residents - Intruders

David Byrne - American Utopia

Thom Yorke - Suspiria

Let's Eat Grandma - I'm All Ears

The Presets - Hi Viz

Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch

etc.

WomanWorldWide by Justice for me. Reimaginings and reworkings of their last three albums for their third tour/tenth anniversary. They've stuck a studio version out this time instead of one from a gig with the crowd noise.

I think 'Now Only' takes the best album for me, if only for the devastating song that is 'Earth'. I have never, ever felt so much sadness and so much bleakness from a song in my life and yet it manages to be utterly beautiful at the same time. I listened to that track multiple times in a row after I first heard it. Go out of your way to listen to this one.

How did I miss this?? I'll seek this out, cheers.

I'm currently listening to Ed Banger's 15 year anniversary album- orchestral renditions of some of the label's biggest hits, including a few from Justice. It's pretty damn good.

Edit: the version of DJ Medhi's Signatune is awesome!

could not get on with that new Arctic Monkeys record

First listen I didn't really get it at all. Gave it another listen and found it interesting. By the third listen I was convinced its the best thing they've done. It really is a cracking album. It maybe should have been a Turner solo album. One thing I respect that band for is constantly changing it up.

God to see The Lovely Eggs getting a mention! Went to see them on tour knowing nothing and came out really enjoying them.

I had no idea albums still thrived

It'll be me & you still smiling in the queue for the next Glen Miller release, after taking our ration books to the butcher for 2lb of kidney.
