The White Dog Turds Thread

My mother gets deliveries from the "lemonade man", or the "Maine man" as they're regularly called over here. She gets about Ā£7 worth of soft drink a week. Looking at their website they claim that they are serving over 40,000 homes across Northern Ireland each week or fortnight, which is fair going for them IMO. The milkman also comes around early in the morning leaving a pint or two on the doorstep, and there's even a man that comes around once a week selling eggs. There's also coal men who, erm, drive around delivering coal.

In the extended spirit of this thread I'll try and think of things that you rarely or never see now - brightly coloured shell suits, push pops, plastic footballs that cost a quid or so, Betterware or Kleeneeze catalogues coming through the letterbox, rental TVs that required 50p or pound coins to operate, televisions that weighed a ton and blank cassettes in your local shop.

Edit: They still have mobile libraries over here too.

The video man.

Used to come round the street in his MK4 ford escort van, selling and renting copiedĀ VHS cassettes for Ā£3 each and 50p for a movie ā€˜posterā€™.

He had VHS on the side of his van and had ā€˜VideoĀ HanksĀ Shopā€™ under each letter. Artist impression attached for reference.

He was called Kevin. He was asked about why he had Hank on the side, he said... ā€œTom HANKS, heā€™s an actor, I sell movies and itā€™s H isnā€™t it?ā€

All bases covered there Kevin.

So yeah, we donā€™t see the video man anymore. The last tape I had off him was Time Cop.

We had a pop guy come round every week. Also a bloke in his estate car that'd rent VHS & Betamax films outĀ the back of his car. When I lived in Stockport about 10 years ago I'd usually see a milkman in an actual milk float whenever I was on an early shift, as opposed to a Toyota Hilux or similar with a child clinging to the back and crates of milk all stacked up.

Shops closing on Wednesdays. Although it has to be said there are a few places round Stockport that don't open on Mondays, although they're mostly hairdressers and that. Maybe there's no demand for a trim on a Monday.

When IĀ  was growing up in Darwen everything would shut for a half day every Tuesday, and in Blackburn it was a Thursday.

Megathreads, they were great and really should make a comeback.

If people are really that arsed about megathreads then by all means go back to them.

Itā€™s as if most people would rather be talking to or being with someone other than whomever they happen to be with at that moment.

Can't say I've noticed this...

Where have all the Jehovahs Witnesses gone?

They're here in Norwich. I genuinely see minimum 2 or 3 of their little set-ups (wheely stand with leaflets on with titles like "What can the bible teach us about suffering?" left seemingly unattended, but with their 'owners' lurking close enough behind to pounce on anyone who glances at it too long) around the city every day of the week. I didn't know we'd taken on everyone else's. That explains why there are so many.

Growing up in rural Norfolk, my milkman & lemonade man were the same man and it came at the same time, but I remember that very well. The video man too, particularly when he started getting wrestling videos on board.

We also had the breadman, Frank the Baker, who was an absolute legend. Known as Frank the Baker despite not actually being a baker (he just did the deliveries) he'd always have a cuppa with my Nan & Grandad (who lived next door to me as a kid). He loved both football & wrestling so he was "my people" as the kids say these days, and had a wonderful range in terrible jokes. My mum told me she'd seen in the paper he'd died a couple of years ago.

I see more today than ever. They are usually outside train stations or near shopping centres, standing next to a stand they've set up. One of my commuter buddies is a JW, it's been interesting getting a bit of insight into their culture/community.
