forgot to post a wee reminder, but BKFC is on tonight (probably already on). Preferring this to the last show on paper.20210818_172909.thumb.jpg.cb71d58deb5dcc852d406db0875414fb.jpg

Alan Belcher looks huge at heavyweight, hes been on some shit.Β

Gonna pay for a month of BKFC on the app for this, will get Gamebred MMA 2 & BKFC 22 in that timeframe so not bad for a couple of quid.

BKFC 20 for the most part was fairly uneventful (the main card anyway) few bright spots but that was about it.

Alan Belcher looked ok, he was in with a big clumsy old vet in Tony Lopez, but he got through it.

It did feature this frightening KO though, i seriously though Cleckler had killed the man. The reaction afterwards seemed to be of major concern too. Hope the bloke was ok.

Just found out Justin Thornton died as a result of the KO. I genuinely feel a little shaken up.

Post-event I couldnt find any info regarding the actual KO, so i'd assumed he was ok. The fall from KO was bad, he landed badly on his neck. Just horrible news.

BKFC are taking a hammering online over the actual matchup. Thornton took the fight on late notice and was on a heavy losing streak coming in against a much heavier man πŸ˜”

Dana has weighed in on the whole situation, and it's not often I agree with him, but credit where it's due on the parts in bold:

Quote

Β

β€œFirst of all, is anybody shocked?” the UFC president told reporters in Las Vegas. β€œI mean, in bare-knuckle fighting? I’m not a big fan. And I get, I guess I would call it concerned, when I see some of our people when they leave here and go there. It’s like, oh my God.

β€œBut when you look at this, we’ve been putting on fights for 25 years. I’ve done over 7,000 fights with no serious injuries in the UFC.”

In recent days, Thorton’s death has brought increased scrutiny to bare-knuckle boxing and the role of state athletic commissions β€” and in White’s eyes, that scrutiny is deserved.

β€œEvery year we spend over $20 million on athletic medical β€” $20 million a year β€” health and wellness or whatever it may be,” White said. β€œAnd 25 percent of our athletes, we send to specialists. So a guy will come and his brain test won’t come out, it’ll be irregular, so we send him to a specialist. If something was irregular with his heart, he or she goes and sees a heart specialist, and we spend the money to find out whatever it is that’s wrong with him.

β€œAnd as a result of that, our pre-fight screening, throughout the last 20 years we found 10 athletes that had life-threatening medical problems with them and career-ending, that they shouldn’t be fighting β€” that if they weren’t in the UFC, they probably would’ve fought and they probably would’ve died.

β€œSo we shouldn’t even be talked about in the same sentence as bare-knuckle boxing,” White continued. β€œIt’s two completely different worlds. And yes, we’re very sorry to hear that this guy passed away, but you’re never going to see any of these other organizations doing the type of health and safety and medical testing that we do for our athletes.”

Β

As much as I shit on Dana, and there's an argument to be made that if fighters were better paid they wouldn't need to go down this route when they leave the UFC, but their attention to medical care is second to none.Β

Granted, that's not all altruistic. Much of that is because they know the shit would hit the fan if there was a medical situation and they were found to be negligent, but still, you can't argue with their record on that front.Β

And that goes for Bellator and the WEC and Strikeforce as well.

I dont know where i sit with it all really. Iike BKFC, i like their presentation and i enjoy the actual sport. Its just so rough around the edges at the moment and the shows are mish-mash of everything. The higher end of the BKFC roster is really good, and they are showing that bare knuckle as an actual sport is its own unique combat discipline. Down the cards though theres a people who are past it, journeyman fighters and in a few cases people are in way over their heads and it is troubling.

As with any tragedy like this, it'll lead to questions being asked, especially towards a sport so primal and whether or not the matchup should have been made, but what happened to Thornton could have happened in any combat discipline where aim is to KO your opponent. It was fall from the knockout that did the damage.

But it didn't. It happened in a sport that prides itself on being violent.Β

It's basically the UFC at its very beginning. At some point, BK is going to have to evolve into a "legit" sport in terms of frameworks, if the promoters don't want to get shut down or legislated against.
