SuperBacon
North by Northwest for me. Absolutely love it. I also really love Psycho as well. It's incredibly well directed, and holds up today. 13 year old me at Universal Studios went to the Alfred Hitchcock walk through before any of the 'rides', 13 year old me didn't have many friends. I haven't seen any of the biopics on him. Best one?

The whole film carries a weird sense of it feeling like you're not actually watching a film, and I love that my nerves do be absolutely rinsed (even though it's not a conventionally tense movie) watching it. Psycho's a great movie. The Gus Van Sant remake really was horrible, wasn't it? I saw that in the flicks and Anne Heche's bumhole, 25 feet high was an awful thing to see. I've never liked Gus van Sant anyway but yeah. One of the weirdest and most unnecessary films ever made, absolutely awful. But just think what a director trying to make their own film could have done with THAT cast. On The Birds, the MPAA weren't best pleased when they first saw the script for it. Good job they didn't know that Tippi Hedren was going to have actual live birds bunged at her. Â
Paid Members chokeout Posted August 13, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 13, 2018 I'm sure Hitchcock used to include stuff just to rile the censors. He got in trouble for including a flushing toilet in Psycho as well, didn't even have a poo in it or anything.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 13, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 13, 2018 @SuperBacon It depends on what you’re looking for in a biopic about him, Gammons. Both are underwhelming, but are polar opposite depictions of the man. The Girl pretty much has him down as a creepy pervert and is quite an uncomfortable watch at times, whereas Hitchcock doesn’t know what it wants to be, yet is a bit more sentimental. Kind of like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel crossed with Chaplin. The latter is the more interesting, if only for the subject matter (the making of Psycho) and the endless stream of actresses and actors playing actresses and actors from times past. And Michael Wincott.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 13, 2018 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 13, 2018 Michael Wincott is unquestionably great.
RIDDUM_N_STYLE
As a big fan of older horror and thriller films, Hitchcock was the one director who's films I wanted to get into but held off for years (apart from owning Psycho) but the past few months I've been picking up films from him at random for dirt cheap including Rear Window, The Birds, North By Northwest and one other that escapes me. My plan was, like I'm doing with the Chaplin feature films, to collect a good chunk and sit down to watch them over a two to three day period
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted August 14, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 14, 2018 (edited) I watched The Birds as a kid and it bugged me up so much that I still have the occasional nightmare about Them Thieving Birds pecking my eyes. How long ago? I still had to twist the dial at my Gran's, granted it was still the bloody 90s. That documentary about that French fella what done an interview with him I worth seeking out, should you give a care. I really like a lot of his films - Â Vertigo, Rear Window (in particular) etc. However, to me, The Birds is his masterpiece - how it still haunts me now. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 14, 2018 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 14, 2018 Yes, it was Hitchcock / Truffaut, a really good documentary that covers a lot of ground in a pretty short running time. It's on YouTube in full as well:- Â
