Yeah I think it all depends on Vick's ability to not get drawn into Gaethje's fight. If he does end up in a trench war with Gaethje, then we'll find out an awful lot about Vick in this fight. If he avoids it then I expect he'll win. If it's trench warfare then I'd favour Gaethje but that's more to do with not knowing much about Vick when dragged into a crazy slugfest. There is a distinct size advantage here as well which should play a part in the approaches of both men.

There's a slight change to the right order that wand. posted, Gall/Sullivan is on Fight Pass and Yayha/Sanders is on the main prelims, thought I'd mention it as I imagine there'll be a few interested in seeing Gall fight.

Thought this was a really good show on the whole. The majority of the fights were good, you had some big finishes, plus I think the fact we've had a little break between shows made this one that bit more enjoyable.

Gaethje really needed that coming off 2 stoppage losses. I mean, a fighter as exciting to watch as him isn't in danger of being sacked off the back off 2 losses in FOTY contenders. But it goes without saying that nobody wants to lose 3 on the trot. Bad break for Vick in his biggest fight to date. I still think he's better than this fight showed but this is what can happen against Justin Gaethje. He's got the capability to knock anyone out if he connects on the button.

Johnson vs Fili was decent, wasn't particularly high on it. Close one as well. I actually thought Fili should've got the nod myself. Johnson did well to survive that rear naked choke but aside from that, I thought Fili did the better work overall, came closest to finishing and I scored him the second and third rounds. Johnson was fortunate to get the decision. He's really treading water at the minute though. There was a time when I think he'd have battered Fili but he seems to be going through a rough patch now. Whether it's a confidence thing or what, who knows, but it was like Henri Hooft was almost having to try to convince him he could win in the corner at times rather than coaching him.

I think Barberena vs Ellenberger ended about how everyone expected. But it was quicker than I thought it'd be. Mercifully. Ellenberger just has nothing left in the tank anymore. It's not even like Barberena is some dangerous striker. Ellenberger is just shot. Hard to believe this is the same guy who went to war with Carlos Condit and Diego Sanchez years ago. Glad to see Ellenberger announce his retirement post-fight. It's been overdue and at least he got that moment to end it in his hometown, I guess.

Figueiredo vs Moraga was good. Although it turned into a showcase for Figueiredo. He looked really sharp here. Loved the elbows in close and the body shot at the finish. Hopefully he can make some much needed noise at flyweight.

The Eryk Anders headkick knockout! Fuck. Me. Just clobbered Williams as he was getting up. Ruthless. Quite like what I've seen from Anders so far.

Corey Sandhagen! Fuck, this was one of the highlights of the whole card for me. Sandhagen is a guy that wasn't on my radar at all. He is now. Stopping a guy like Alcantara like that was a strong win. Going all Dan Hardy and surviving and escaping that nasty inverted armbar was impressive enough. But then the way he took it to Alcantara after that was something else. Really liked this from Sandhagen and I'm looking forward to seeing him fight again.

Mickey Gall looked fantastic. Exactly the kind of performance he needed to rebound from his first loss. You could see how fired up he was after the finish as well. Thought his post-fight interview was a bit cringey but he got his point across and, like he always does, lined himself up with a couple of potential fights he wants. Wouldn't mind seeing that Diego Sanchez fight at MSG. Not keen on the Sage rematch idea though. It's never a good look calling out someone you already beat, unless they've got a title or something.

And I didn't see the fight but I was chuffed to hear Joanne Calderwood won on Fight Pass. And by submission of all things! Never expected that.

I see Rani Yahya ran through another one as well. Heel hooked Luke Sanders in 90 seconds. Seriously, Yahya is quality. He's one of the more overlooked fighters on the roster at the moment for me. He's won 7 of his last 8 and subbed his last 3 opponents. I get that he's got about as much charisma as a paperweight but he's better than the opening prelim curtain jerk spot they put him in here.

Good show all in all.

well, your fight order was right wand :D

excellent wee card that, i watched it top to bottom (except for the womens fights).

* Feel a bit silly for ever doubting Gaethje now. Vick started well but against a come forward savage like Gaethje there's only so long you can pick your shots from range and back up before he'll get to you. Brutal KO, Vick was toast.

* Echo your thoughts about Yahya, that bloke deserves a bit more recognition. He's been around for ages but i never see much of him because he's always buried on the prelims. He's the kind of guy who could defeat anyone at 135lb if he can drag a fight to the floor, proper specialist and you don't see many of those in the lighter divisions these days. Chuck him in with a top 10 guy next.

* Yep, Anders KO was fucking nasty. He had a real poor first round but warmed into it as it went, that guys packing some power. I wanna see him mix it with someone of similar stature who will stand in the pocket and trade shots with him.

* Sandhagan/Alcantara was a worthy FOTN and it was pretty much 1 round. How Sandhagan refused to tap to that arm bar i will never know, Alcantara bent it about 4 ways, fucking nuts. I thought Alcantara pretty much threw the fight away by being to comfortable staying on his back after Sandhagan got out, he was looking for subs but the strikes caught him with him. Sandhagan's a decent new addition, physically doesn't seem much but he's a gutsy fighter, i like that.

* Figuereido/Morgago was tidy as fuck down at 125. We always talk about the division being a little stale as the top end seems to stay the same. Figuereido is the fresh guy we need, he's a nasty little fucker, got a bit of the John Lineker's about him in that he's carrying big power for such a small guy. Get him in with a top 5 next, Joe Benavidez?

* Ellenberger going out like that was quite sad. This was probably one fight too many really given his recent run but he seems like one of those guys that still has it physically in terms of output but his body just can't take the damage. Barbarena hit him hard but the way his body just loses control when he's hit is worrying. I read pre-fight that if Ellenberger hadn't got this last UFC fight he was gonna go fight elsewhere, i hope he still doesn't plan to do that. Heck of a career.

Where does Gaethje go next? Hes good to go but there's limited options cause everyone at the top is tied up.

Poirier/Diaz, McGregor/Khabib, Pettis/Ferguson.

Only viable options are Kevin Lee, Al Iaquinta or perhaps re-run the Alvarez fight if he re-signs. Lee is lobbying for the Iaquinta fight though.

What about Edson Barboza, if Lee and Iaquinta end up fighting? I haven't heard of Edson being booked at the moment, and I can't see a fight between him and Gaethje being anything other than fireworks.

You know, there aren't any potential fights at the top of the LW division that I don't want to see. I want to watch:

McGregor Vs Nurmagomedov/Ferguson/Diaz III/GSP/Gaethje

Khabib Vs Conor/Ugly Tony/GSP/Diaz/Gaethje/Lee/Poirier

Ferguson Vs Khabib/McGregor/Diaz/GSP/Lee II/Gaethje/Poirier

And all that is before you even mention the likes of Alvarez due to his contact situation, Pettis, Barboza, Iaquinta, Vick and rising talents like Hernandez and Hooker.

I love Gaethje, but there's certainly a ceiling to his success based on his maniac fighting style, which we've already seen him limit how far he can go in the company before the elite guys are able to pick him off a bit (Alvarez, Poirer). If Pettis wasn't fighting Ferguson, I'd love to see that fight go down. Could still happen to be honest, I'm sure Gaethje's body wouldn't mind a bit of a rest before fighting the loser of that one. Most of the big names are occupied at the moment though, so unless he fancies a fight against someone like Hooker or Teymur, might be a bit of a prolonged rest period awaiting him.

I really, really, fucking really want to see Gaethje vs Diaz. Probably won't happen but given their styles and attitudes that would be total chaos.

Thats the fight i want too. It'll be a bit of a travesty if that doesnt happen actually, it has FOTY written all over it. Gaethje said it Saturday too that he takes the insults personally leading up to a fight, Diaz would have him boiling over. It has to happen.

For all the criticisms and flaws in Gaethje's style, he's the kind of fighter that you're still not going to look forward to fighting. Even if you know you're technically superior, you also know that Gaethje is going to be on you from the second the bell rings and he won't fuck off until one of you is unconscious. Michael Chandler was on Rogan's podcast recently and they were talking about Gaethje and Chandler was saying that no matter what opponents criticise and say publicly about Gaethje's one-note style, deep down there's always a bit of fear fighting a guy like him because you just know he's going to be on you every nanosecond of the fight. It's great watching him as a spectator but it must absolutely suck to be the one actually fighting him. It's easy for us divs to say he's too basic, not technical enough etc but there probably aren't much more than a small handful of guys who can do what Poirier and Alvarez did. They weren't just more technical than Gaethje, they also have that next level toughness to hang in there with him and get through that hell he puts on guys.

He's a total throwback to the simpler, often more fun times in MMA. Even when they were going over the replays of the KO and Felder asked him if it was due to some mistake he saw Vick making in studying him and he was like 'nah not really I just prepare to fight for 25 minutes'. I don't think he ever studies opponents or has a gameplan. It seems like his training camps consist purely of hitting shit hard and getting his conditioning down so he can go at that mental pace for 25 if need be. It's bone-headed and it's not going to work at the very elite level in 2018 but I'm not even sure he gives a fuck. He seems to genuinely enjoy fighting the way he fights.

I love his attitude as well. He's not delusional about thinking he's invincible or anything. Pretty much the first thing he said about the KO in his post-fight interview was 'that could just as easily been me getting knocked out'. He knows and accepts that the way he fights means he's not going to always come out on top but he's willing to roll the dice and see what happens. There's something about that kind of fighter that I love.

As for what's next for Gaethje, maybe he ends up getting that Ferguson fight. I could see Gaethje being another guy on standby now for UFC 229 incase anyone of Khabib, Conor, Fergie or Pettis drops out.
