On a sadly related note, the EFL confirmed Bolton's administration and 12pt penalty for next season today.

It was similar when wages started to spiral, bang average strikers started wanting 20k a week because someone better at their club was on it.

Thing for me is that if there's anyone in the game who deserves to reap the rewards, it's the players.

I've long seen it said (not by you) that players are paid too much, that they should cap wages and suchlike. Do people assume that by doing that there'll be less money flowing into the clubs? Of course not, it just means more dough being funnelled into the pockets of the suits who run the game.

The amounts being dished out are getting silly, but if the cash is in the game then I'd rather it went to the people who the fans are actually paying to see.

Paul Hurst looks a superb appointment at Scunny for their League Two campaign. Had great success with Grimsby and Shrewsbury but was out of his depth at Ipswich with all that was going on there. Sure loads of clubs in League One would have fancied him so a bit of a coup.

There was nothing going on there. He inherited a pretty solid squad from Mick McCarthy, with some decent youth players coming through. Ipswich are a club who aren't known for sacking managers on a whim, and they have a fairly sensible owner. It was his approach that fucked it for him.

He came in and started claiming that the players weren't fit enough under Mick, that they'd "had it easy," then started playing Billy Big Bollocks with the senior members of the squad.

His reputation took a bit of a battering because he tried to treat high level pros as though they were lower league mugs, and it backfired spectacularly on him.

Ipswich have been shrinking the budget year on year. They sold or released their front three and their best centre half. Mick had them punching anyway but under those circumstances, Hurst didn't have a chance. On paper, easily in the worst four squads in the league at the start. Recruitment was shite. Some clearly his players, most weren't.

Ipswich going down was the highlight of my season. The Mayor of Ruabon (It's voted on every year in the Duke of Wellington, it's essentially a village idiot's prize) is mad on Ipswich Down. He once threw a bar towel at me for mentioning Jeremy Goss.

Martyn Waghorn was settled in Suffolk, his wife loved it there, she was working with the local community, the whole lot. Within a week of Hurst being there Waghorn wanted out. A lot of the senior players saw the writing on the wall, both Hurst and his assistant Chris Doig came in and instead of tinkering a little with what was a decent enough lower Championship squad they decided to tear everything up, tell the players they weren't fit enough, insinuate that Mick didn't have a clue what he was doing, and go about the job of showing all the senior players exactly who was boss.

Did you see his comment about Knudsen after he came back from the World Cup? It was something along the lines of him maybe playing on the world stage, but that he'd done nothing for him as yet. Can you imagine that? You come back from playing for your country at the world cup and the new manager, who is relative nobody, plays it down like that?

You can maybe get away with that if you're a manager or ex-player with a big rep, but this guy had come from the lower leagues and done fuck all of note.

And virtually every player signed was his. For the most part they came from the lower leagues, supposedly his forte. Like him though, they were mostly out of their depth.

Paul Lambert has tried to be diplomatic after taking over, but it's clear that he knows virtually none of those players Hurst signed are good enough.

In short, the guy fucked it. Let's hope he's learned his lesson before he tries again at a higher level. League Two is perfect for him in all honesty I think.

Aston Villa are one game from being back in the Premier League :(

Let's hope Derby or Bielsa do the job then. This half of the draw was always going to be the 'of, fuck off' side. West Brom and Villa- nah you're alright thanks.
