Mbappe versus Maguire is what I'm hedging my bets on now to put an end to this nightmare. I'm one more 'Football's Coming Home' singalong from the pub downstairs away from cementing my ears shut.

No, I'm preparing myself for the final to save me. Sticking with the same formula I did with Liverpool and the Champions League, and it worked a treat then. #mindyourheadjordan

I just watched the Euro 96 documentary on ITV, and got a bit emotional. Not tears into the pillow or anything, but that thing where your thread feels like you've got a crisp stuck in it. Took me back to the Summer of 96. I was going into senior school, Cantona was the man, Fantasy Football was class, music was great, comedy was great, the nWo was in full flow, Austin 3:16 just happened and the England team were going to win a trophy. Just a very memorable time in my life. I remember watching the Holland game with my family and couldnt believe what we were seeing. Still the best England performance ever. Real shame we didnt get to win that. And so fucking mental that the player who missed the penalty is now back in a semi final tomorrow night. What a story this could be.

I'm looking forward to the big match tonight but have such mixed feelings on it. Obviously I want England to win it but I'm half Croatian and have cheered them on throughout the World Cup. I've also put a fiver on them to win the whole thing at the start of the tournament so there's that as well. Whatever happens I won't grumble too much and I'll definitely have one team to support in the final.

I saw it on its first airing in 2016, it's a great documentary. There also a really good one called to Return to Turin with Gary Lineker, Paul Parker and Terry Butcher which was on the History channel.

Its unbelievable to think that it's 22 years ago since Euro 96 and now Gareth Southgate is the England manager.Ā Whatever happens he's done a magnificent job and the lads will be national heroes like the Italia 90 and Euro 96 teams were. This time though hopefully *fingers crossed* they will come home as World Cup winners. It's a tremendous chance they have and to soundĀ cliched,Ā they reallyĀ are on the precipice of greatness.Ā

Ireland calling: I'm all for England to win it. Oddly enough, though the media is cited as an example of why it would be an unbearable eventuality, I find it one of the reasons I wouldn't mind seeing them do it. I chalk it down to this sort of cultural empathy thing. I invariablyĀ consume a lot of British media andĀ and seeing it wet itself with happiness for those initial few weeks of jubilation appeals to me for some reason. I grew up with loads and loads of English personalities from some of my favorite artists to the most comforting and nostalgic TV personalities. Seeing how they would all react on, say, Twitter piques my fuzzy tingle times in a way that the French winning could never exactly fill me with the same warm glow.

That's my rationale on it, anyway. My girlfriend is 50%Ā French - the dads side - so that should be fun, too. I haven't clued her in on this duplicitous, feelgood leeching support for the English.Ā

Go and win it, for the craic.Ā

It does feel a bit like when you have a really long save on Football Manager and Ashley Cole ends up Manchester United manager. I had one save where Paul Robinson ended up as Spurs chairman.Ā

Pubbing it up again for this one. Hard, hard game to call this evening, to use that horrible footballing cliche it depends on what Croatia turn up. If it's the vintage from the knockout stages, England should win, but if they revert to how they played in the group stages, will probably be the opposite.Ā

On the Football Manager talk; Gareth Southgate won the World Cup for England in 2018 in one of my Football Manager 2016 saves. Coincidence? I think yes.Ā

Indeed, barring a mental collapse, it's hard to see either side running away with it. They were properly shithousing it in the Argentina game, which was funny at the time, but concerns me about tonight. Luckily we got some great training in coping with it vs Colombia. We haven't had to deal with considerable attacking talent yet, but I'm not sure they'll come after us.Ā

Regardless, even if we haven't beaten anyone that good, it's been fun.Ā

Yeah, that's pretty much going to be my overarching memory of this England team, even if we lose tonight and with the totally fair caveat that we haven't beaten anyone that good. It's been wonderful fun and I like the team - the first time I have been able to say that in over twenty years. Feeling an emotion that isn't cringingĀ embarrassment or desolate misery with regard to England is so bloody nice. It's restored a love of football for me that has collapsed a lot in recent years at a club level.Ā

I understandĀ the 'look at how the draw opened up, they haven't had much to beat' comments, but those comments never seem to apply anywhere else. Look at Federer's draws at Wimbledon the last few years, nobody remarks that up to the QF 4-5 years runningĀ he has faced a succession of clay-court specialists, mugs who can't play on grass, or his opponent in last year'sĀ final was literally a walking cripple!

Kudos to this England squad, it's been the most engaged many people have been with their national team in many years.

If the game goes Extra Time I can see Croatia by that point being leggy after extra time in the last couple of rounds. I have no worries about tonight I think England are good enough to win and Croatia are not the type of team to sit back or make things difficult (fouls, physically). I also think in a strange way Croatia will feel more pressure than this England team who are playing with freedom.

As much as I've enjoyed the England team this world cup the braying "Three Lions" lot make me want England to lose on penalties today. All those cunts hanging out desperately waiting for the moment they can "go nuts" and throw beer all over the place can simply fuck off.

There is no greater joy in life than seeing this:

"I can't believe it mate...I'm proper cut up about this"

Ā

That said, would love to see England in the final obv.
