Paid Members Kaz Hayashi Posted February 10, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted February 10, 2018 I’m really up for it this year, absolutely love the fact it’s in Korea and that North and South have united for it. The opening was on last night and the use of over 1200 drones to form the Olympic Rings was pretty impressive. Anyway, let the games begin. Any of you lot got any interest? Or looking forward to a particular event?
Jon-Carr_92
If it's one thing I enjoy about the multinational sporting events, it's the Twitter HashFlags (for example, Union Flag automatically shows up when you type #GBR) They're great fun and the best part is they still show up for older stuff like 2015 Rugby World Cup and Euro 2016 and the Rio Olympics I've noticed. Albeit they had different designs like a flag in the shape of a rugby ball for the RWC. Makes Tweeting about it more fun just to see them come up. I have it on authority the same will be done for the Commonwealth games in the Gold Coast later this year I tend to watch. Keeps me occupied. Fun to watch the sports that don't normally get shown on TV. A lot of the winter sports are pretty gutsy.
Paid Members JNLister Posted February 10, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted February 10, 2018 I spent too much of today in a rant about how they should never have changed skijumping to incorporate judge's scoring for form as well as distance. Turns out that's always been how it worked, it's just they never used to announce the scoring during the jumps, which is why people got confused when it took a while at the end to decide who'd won and then the guy you thought had jumped furthest didn't always win. Paid Members PunkStep Posted February 10, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted February 10, 2018 Funny you mention that Lister, I had to have my 8 year old daughter explain the same thing to me today. I always thought it was entirely down to distance.
bigfoote
I think they should split it into two disciplines...classic (as is), and a long jump. I'm sure I've seen something called ski flying on Eurosport back in the day, distances over 150m, Let's do that.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted February 11, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted February 11, 2018 I remember spending one winter Olympiad pretty much camped out at my mate's for the duration of the curling. Probably 2002. I don't think my work schedule will allow me to properly watch it this time around.

Paid Members Kaz Hayashi Posted February 11, 2018 Author Paid Members Share Posted February 11, 2018 I’m looking forward to the Snowboard big air event. Always been a fav of mine, as is the Ice Hockey final. Speaking of which, did anyone see the build up and the subsequent result of the first Korea United game? They did a whole ‘nations coming together after years apart’ lots of smiling faces, lots of positivity and then it showed them getting absolutely fucking trounced 8-0 by Switzerland. BBC from the heart, magical.
Mr_Danger
I watched the ladies USA vs the Ladies Finland Ice Hockey game. No fights at all. Either American movies have been lying to me or I just got unlucky.
Moderators PowerButchi Posted February 11, 2018 Moderators Share Posted February 11, 2018 You get done for fighting in Olympic Hockey. A red card essentially, unlike the NHL where you just get 5 mins in the box.

Am I right in thinking you’re essentially out for the rest of the competition too (if you get a red), or is it just for the remainder of that game? Moderators PowerButchi Posted February 11, 2018 Moderators Share Posted February 11, 2018 Dunno. Wouldn't be surprised if there was suspensions though.

If a single punch is thrown in another sport, there's a huge backlash. I know it's 'part of the game/culture' and all that, but it's still mental. courageous
Zero interest in the sports, but that really was a fantastic ceremony (Imagine not withstanding) - best event ceremony since 2012
Paid Members Kaz Hayashi Posted February 11, 2018 Author Paid Members Share Posted February 11, 2018 (Ski cross country) - Krueger, fucking hell, some boy. Fell right at the beginning but then came back and ended up smashing the course for gold.
