Have a natter about all things Trek. How boring the original motion picture is. Always wound up a mate by saying Voyager was better than Deep Space 9 because Sisko thought he was in Othello. Currently watching DS9 and I'll never admit he is right. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted October 23, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted October 23, 2017 I think one commonly held theory is that the events of Star Trek: First Contact kickstarted Earth's technological advancement due to the Enterprise E's presence at and involvement in the first warp flight, which is why Enterprise and Discovery looked more futuristic than TOS "does" So we are in the prime timeline, but it's been altered by "future" events. Star Trek to me is a family show that should be accessible to all ages, and really did not need this in it. I wasn't feeling too good last night so kept dozing while I was watching it, but I'm pretty sure at one point in this week's episode Lorca and the Admiral were making the beast with two backs as well. I don't mind the whole "looks more futuristic than TOS" thing, as you can't just knock out dodgy 60s looking sci fi for ever (Completely changing the look of the Klingons seems really pointless though.) What I do mind is that it doesn't feel like a Star Trek series at all really. The fundamentals of every Trek series so far have always been - exploration of the unknown, a crew all working together in a collegiate atmosphere, a positive and moral example of a future society. All of this is lacking from Discovery, which is much more like Battlestar Galactica or The Expanse - dark, moody, violent, sweary. I was hoping for something different after a decade of serious sci fi but it lacks even the humour of the recent films. It's good, but it's not got a whole lot of Star Trek DNA in it. Next Generation was my jam, for the most part, and I watched and re-watched some of their appalling films when I got the VHS - although, I think the Borg one was alright. Next Generation was pretty good, thinking about it. It seemed to hook any age into watching it. I got into Voyager and stayed with it mainly because I was in heat and Jeri Ryan and her metal face was perfection to 10/12 year old me. Thought Deep Space Nine was shite, but I think that partly had to do with me watching it when I was moving on from Star Trek. I quite enjoy the new films. They're fun. More than Sisko, Garak is just fucking brilliant in it - simultaneously mercurial, funny, and sinister as hell. DS9 is one of my favourite Star Trek series ever. First time they ever did the series-long over-arching storyline, and whilst it had a few duffers, for the most part I thought it worked incredibly well. Also, Star Trek: First Contact isn't just "alright" for a TNG film, it's one of the best Star Trek films EVAR. EDIT: Another thing. Have any of you watched the re-mastered original series on Netflix yet? They worked in some beautiful touches, my favourite being "The Enterprise Incident": in the original episode, the Enterprise faced off with three Romulan ships, but because, for some reason, the original Romulan bird-of-prey model wasn't available, they used three Klingon cruisers and said in the storyline it was the result of a tech exchange. Fair enough, but it looked a bit pony, especially as they do anything with the models to differentiate them from the Klingon ones. In the re-mastered version, they replaced one of the cruisers with the original bird-of-prey, and then messed around with the Klingon cruisers by imposing the Romulan bird paint-job design on them to make them stand out. Does anyone know where I could get a definitive list of episodes where the Dominion plot progresses so I can miss side episodes? As a kid I used to get the star trek fact files. I loved looking at the photography and diagrams of ships, star charts and uniforms etc. Now it's so easy to find the info. Discovery for me is a bit hit and miss. I understand it's going to look sharper but I think some stuff like all the hologram and holodeck stuff is too advanced. I hope they explain it if it keeps going by the war escalating and the federation not having the time or resources to make all this tech because they just need to push out star shops and war gubbins. I can buy in to that happening and then the idea that during tos they were rebuilding themselves. Did anyone see that fan movie set after ds9 and voygar about a black ops group? It was a pilot that wasn't really a pilot We didn't even see the titular ship until the third episode. But they've really brought me on board with the last few episodes and I have to disagree with Loki in that I feel - especially the last few weeks - that Discovery is very Trek. My main issue with the show was that I wanted them to be more episodic, with the war arc in the background while they do other stuff and they've actually done that, to a degree. I'm pissed there's a mid-season break given its a short run anyway - 13 episodes I think. I know we live in a different era TV wise, and having to fill 24 episodes led to some real dogshit Trek episodes in the 90s and 00s, but they also gave us the opportunity to really live with the crew and get to know them, which I miss from Discovery. DS9 is the best Trek, for me. In The Pale Moonlight has been mentioned but it really is just a fantastic episode of television, Trek or otherwise. That was me all along! Discovery is fucking fantastic. If Only Connect was on hiatus it'd be my favourite thing on telly at the moment. I've discussed with @SpursRiot2012already in "tv you gave up on" about having initial doubts but after the duff double pilot it's rocketed away. And yes it's full-on Trek ideals at it's heart, but having a war core gives it an interesting dimension. Rather than continual peacekeeping there's tension present. And who the fuck cares if the tech is too advanced or the Klingons have the wrong makeup on? What a miserable existence to be bothered by such things. I'm due a rewatch of DS9. I've been trying to wade through Enterprise to get to the end, but christ it's pedestrian. Over-reliance on over-bearing Trip, and the sexualisation of T'pol is irritating and childish. If Gene Roddenberry was alive today and creating Star Trek nowadays it'd probably look like this. Microsoft have tried teasing that they've been working on what can almost be described as "Holodeck" technology nowadays with some of their AR interface ideas, and if they're working on things like that now then there's no reason something like that shooting gallery thing from this week's episode wouldn't exist by the mid 23rd century. Likewise with the hologram communication things. In the 60s we didn't think people would be able to use handheld communication devices over long differences, and look at us now with our mobile phones and touch screen interfaces.
