Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 Now that everyone hates him (although I should point out I've hated him since the start of Buffy and I told you all so) and that is ex-wife says he's a sexist twat and his biggest fansite has closed down, let's all talk about why he's shit and a cunt or, if you want to be a wrong, why he's not. Merzbow
I've always said that you can practically see him wanking over his "feminist" lead characters, Dollhouse was when I eventually said fuck this guy as it was a truly awful show which was likely just a vehicle for his Eliza Dushku fantasies. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 21, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 Elevating Eliza Dushku's career is one of his biggest crimes. An absolutely terrible actress.
Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted August 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 At least he's not Kevin Smith.
Paid Members Thunderplex Posted August 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 Enjoyed Buffy and Angel. Â Enjoyed the Avengers stuff and love SHIELD. Â No problem with him at all this end.
Moderators Astro Hollywood Posted August 21, 2017 Moderators Share Posted August 21, 2017 He's the world's worst writer. All of his characters speak in exactly the same voice, with their snarky, referrential zingers. You could take any of his lines of dialogue and put it in the mouth of any character, and nobody would notice the difference.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted August 21, 2017 Moderators Share Posted August 21, 2017 I'm out of the loop. What's happened that's made everyone backlash against him?
Paid Members SpursRiot2012 Posted August 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 He had multiple affairs over the course of his marriage, which kinda contradicts him being this uber feminist. I did like Firefly. And Angel, did he do Angel?
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 Enjoyed Firefly but that was mainly due to Mal Reynolds. A character which - as Astro has alluded to - has been interchangeable and unfortunately diluted because of other characters with the exact same personality that he's written following that show. At least Kevin Smith knows his limits and can ape himself. Whedon sees himself as some kind of persecuted martyr for geekdom.

The backlash started a month or so back when he was hired to do the Batgirl movie, and some people were all "as a feminist, he's perfect!" but then his old Wonder Woman screenplay leaked, and it was sexist garbage. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 21, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 I was going to give him The Cabin in the Woods but he didn't direct that, so he loses that one as well.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 Here he is blaming everyone else on the failure of translating his script to screen for Alien Resurrection : I genuinely wouldn't put it past him if he dribbled that "mostly" in as some kind of smug nod to fans of Aliens... Quote "It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines...mostly...but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do. There's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking, because everything that they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from the script, and people assume that, if I hated it, then they’d changed the script...but it wasn’t so much that they’d changed the script; it’s that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable."
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 21, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 21, 2017 So much of the obviously Jeunet stuff in Alien: Resurrection is great. Those two were never going to work together in the first place but all of Whedon's stuff in that is awful. He didn't understand the franchise at all. Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted August 21, 2017 Awards Moderator Share Posted August 21, 2017 Unashamed fan of his work. Love Buffy and Angel, liked Firefly and Dollhouse. Generally will gravitate towards a film if his name is attached.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted August 21, 2017 Moderators Share Posted August 21, 2017 Cheers. I didn't even realise he was held up as some kind of feminist paragon! Because he has female lead characters? Surely that's not enough of a reason.. I don't like any of his tv shows but Avengers was good.
