The Octagon lands back in London on Saturday 18th March. Who's going?

FIGHT PASS MAIN CARD

Jimi Manuwa vs Corey Anderson

Gunnar Nelson vs Alan Jouban

Brad Pickett vs Marlon Vera

Makwan Amirkhani vs Arnold Allen

FIGHT PASS PRELIMS

Joseph Duffy vs Reza Madadi

Francimar Barroso vs Darren Stewart

Daniel Omielanczuk vs Timothy Johnson

Marc Diakiese vs Teemu Packalen

Tom Breese vs Oluwale Bamgbose

Leon Edwards vs Vicente Luque

Ian Entwistle vs Brett Johns

Bradley Scott vs Scott Askham

Lina Lansberg vs Lucie Pudilova

You know, disappointment in the choice of main event aside, I actually quite like this card as a whole. If you tacked a better fight on top there I doubt there'd have been half the complaints about this one. It's Corey Anderson that's the problem for me. If it was Manuwa vs Shogun or Rashad or something headlining, I'd be more than happy with this and I'd have probably bought tickets. Oh well.

Manuwa vs Anderson then. It's not even a terrible fight. It's just a weak main event and I just don't like Corey 'Dark Bader' Anderson. I like Manuwa though and I'm hoping he gives Beastin' Corey the same treatment he gave OSP at UFC 204 in October. That was Manuwa's best UFC win yet by far. OSP is no world beater but he did go the distance with Jon Jones last year. For Manuwa to brutally knock him out the way he did was good stuff. And with 205 how it is, a win like that probably catapults you further than it would in a deeper division. If he can do the same to Anderson then he'll probably get a contenders fight next. I'd like to see Manuwa vs Glover.

Nelson vs Jouban is ***WAND'S ONE TO WATCH***. It was a late addition to the card but a very welcome one to say the least! I love this matchup. We're in a time now in MMA where almost everyone is at least competent in every discipline. So you don't get the real style vs style contrasts as often as you used to. This is one of them though. Gunnar's grappling vs Jouban's striking. It'll be interesting to see whose style wins out. I really liked Jouban's performance against Mike Perry on December's FOX show. He showed excellent striking but he also showed intelligence and patience that we didn't know he had in his style, as he'd previously mostly been in brawls. I think he's a little bit out of his depth against Gunnar. I think Gunnar can hang on the feet and if it hits the ground it's his playground. But I hope Jouban can make a fight of it. Maybe he'll surprise me.

Pickett vs Briones doesn't interest me that much. It'll probably be decent but with Pickett winding down and talking retirement recently, I was hoping for something better for him on this card than Henry Briones. But thinking about it, Pickett's already fought most of the names knocking around already. It'll most likely be a solid enough fight. Pickett doesn't really have snoozers so at worst it'll be decent.

Amirkhani vs Allen I'm into just to see Amirkhani again. He's one of those guys who's burst on the scene over the last couple of years who's really stood out. The roster is so big these days that so many prelimers come and go and most of them you forget as soon as they leave the cage. Then there's some that make you remember. Yair Rodriguez is one. The Korean Superboy is another. And Makwan Amirkhani was another. He debuted on the big Sweden stadium show in 2015 and won by flying knee in 8 seconds! He followed that up with two more UFC wins, so he's 3-0 in the UFC now. From Finland but fights out of SBG in Dublin training alongside and under Conor McGregor and John Kavanagh. He's got bags of charisma, always smiling and just generally hard to dislike. He was building nice momentum but he hasn't fought in a year. It'll be good to see him back in there. Arnold Allen is a tough opponent after a year out though. He's an 11-1 British fighter coming off two UFC wins.

Duffy vs Madadi is a fight I love the sound of. Like Gunnar vs Jouban it's a real contrast in styles. Duffy is the technician with really good boxing and slick submissions. Madadi is a lunatic who comes to take your head off by any means necessary. Interestingly this is the last fight of Duffy's UFC contract and apparently he's testing free agency after. Hopefully they can sort that out because there's a lot of upside in Duffy and I think it's clear that the UFC is where he belongs skill wise. I think Duffy wins this all day myself but Madman Madadi will go out swinging.

Entwistle vs Johns in a battle of England vs Wales. Don't know too much about either guy really. Remember reading a bit about Entwistle on the Cage Warriors forums over the years. He used to post on there as well. He's 9-3 and a bit of a leg lock/heel hook specialist. Brett Johns is the Welshman, 13-0 and won his UFC debut in November on the Belfast show. The thing I love most about this fight though is the nicknames - The Locksmith vs The Pikey

Edwards vs Luque is another fight I'm into. I guess this card is a bit better than I realised. Being a fellow Brummie, Leon Edwards gets my support here. He fights out of Erdington, which is a 10 minute drive from me and is where my sister lives and my wife grew up. Got to back the local guy. He's coming off a very impressive submission win over Albert Tumenov as well. A fight I didn't expect him to win, much less by submission. Vicente Luque is a hard fight though. He's found his feet in the UFC it seems, winning his last four fights, all by stoppage. He knocked out the usually durable Belal Muhammad inside a round at UFC 205 in MSG in November as well. He took that on short notice too. So he's a bit of a handful.

Diakiese vs Packalen is another fight well worth keeping an eye on. Diakiese fights out of Doncaster, he's 11-0 and has won his first two UFC fights. I've only seen bits and pieces really but he looks the business from what I've seen. Really good striker. Only 23 as well so time is on his side too. Packalen is 29, 8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC. He hasn't fought since last February but he won that fight by rear naked choke in just 24 seconds!

Both of them.

Err yeah Lansberg vs Macedo could be good. Lansberg is known purely for getting crushed by Cyborg a few months back in her UFC debut. But I honestly think she's better than that. It'd be unfair to judge her solely on that fight because, let's face it, everyone looks bad against Cyborg. She's only 6-2 in MMA, which isn't great, but she's got a fuckload of Muay Thai experience. I liked her attitude before and after the Cyborg fight. Macedo is 21 years old, Venezuelan with a record of 5-1-1. She got TKO'd by Ashlee Evans-Smith in her UFC debut.

Breese vs Bamgbose doing curtain jerking duties doesn't do it justice IMO. I actually really like this one. Breese is another Brummie, but trains under Firas Zahabi at Tri Star. He's a BJJ brown belt and is 10-1 in MMA. He was unbeaten until he dropped a decision to Sean Strickland in June. And Bamgbose just looks like a killer. He's got an extensive striking background in Taekwondo, Karate and even Kung Fu. And he's also a BJJ brown belt. He's from the Bronx as well. You better be able to scrap living there. Especially when your nickname's 'The Holy War Angel'!

So yeah, good card. Just could've done with a better main event.

Pickett has actually fully announced that this is his MMA retirement fight. He's said that he'll do grappling stuff afterwards but not MMA.

Yeah, I'll be there, sitting in the nose bleeds.

If that had a better main event and had the actual card underneath it this would be looking fairly solid.

That said, i like the card. I always take interest in the UK based fighters and this thing is full of them. Couple of the newly signed Welsh fighters would have been nice though.

Bought tickets at the time for this. So will be there.

Was a bit annoying initially at the main event announcement. But when you really look at the card I really like it. Got the best of the new breed coming out of England at the moment.

As interest for me heading down from Scotland it would of been fun to have Jojo, Ray or Craig on the card. But the other guys are easy to get behind. So should be a fun night regardless.

Brett Johns is on the card. Marshman was already booked and fought last night. No idea what is happening with John Phillips. Was suppose to fight on the Denver card. Think he was pulled due to Visa issues. So surprised his fight didn't land on this card.

Spoke to a couple of people at cage warriors over the weekend who are 'in the know,' Manuwa/Anderson never supposed to be the main event of this, Gusty fight fell through, Joanna was talked about but supposedly they're scaling back on Fight Pass shows over TV shows currently (Likely down to WME change of direction) and so didn't wanna give away a title fight on Fight Pass, combined with the fact they're already stretching thin on show headliners currently.

Manuwa: Glover Didn’t Want to Fight Me

by Daniel Vreeland

02/22/2017

When UFC management announced the main event of their March 18th London event, half of the headliner was absolutely no surprise. Coming off of a huge knockout with over former title challenger, Ovince St. Preux, Jimi Manuwa’s stock has never been higher. Training out of London, it only made sense to see ‘Poster Boy’ get the nod to lead the card. However, his counterpart did come as somewhat of a surprise.

Having proven he was ready to stake his claim in the top 5 of the light heavyweight division, some expected Manuwa to face one of the division perennial elite. Instead, fast-rising prospect Corey Anderson, who is now ranked 7 in the UFC’s official ranking, got the spot.

“I did want a bigger name,” Manuwa admitted in a recent interview with Top Turtle MMA Podcast. “But Corey Anderson is a great fighter. I’m not looking past him”.

The failure to get a bigger name wasn’t for lack of trying by Manuwa, his management or the UFC. According to Manuwa, the paperwork was all drawn up and signed for a match with top talent Glover Teixeira, but something fell through.

“I was looking forward to fighting [Glover] already, and I don’t think that he wanted to fight [me],” said Manuwa, adding he was never given a reason why the fight didn’t go through. However, looking at Glover’s next booking, it was clear to Manuwa that Teixeira wasn’t looking to fight a top-ranked opponent.

“He just fought the number 15 ranked guy in his last fight and he’s ranked number 3, which makes no sense to me,” said Manuwa.

After the loss of the Glover fight, Manuwa said his management pressed for fights with Ryan Bader and Shogun Rua, both of which fell through for their own reasons. Despite being disappointed with the failed bookings, Manuwa says he’s no longer interested in fighting Glover.

“I’m not looking for the Glover fight after this, no,” he said. “If I beat Corey Anderson, I’ll be looking for the winner of DC and ‘Rumble’ Johnson or maybe welcome back Jon Jones

Gutting news for Pickett. Luckily the quality of that fight for him didn't completely hang on the opponent. Surely they can find a replacement.

What's Neil Seery doing? McCall pulled out of his retirement fight, didn't he? Makes sense to have him face Pickett if he's in shape, surely.

I'm going but haven't got tickets yet. I've been keeping an eye on them on getmein.co.uk - There's loads of tickets available since they were all brought up for people to try and sell on for profit, but now with the substandard main event they're not reselling too well.

I'm thinking the closer it gets to the event, the cheaper they will get so people can get some money back for them. Hopefully....

There are a tonne of tickets for this Twickets (where people sell their unwanted tickets for face value), if anyone still wants to go and not pay over the odds. Think Twickets take a small fee themselves but it's better than paying touts.

I'm still glad I didn't get a ticket in the end. Even at the lowest price, it's not a card that's tickled my fancy.

If I'm honest, my biggest regret about not going was when I heard Miesha Tate was the guest fighter! I wouldn't have minded meeting her. I still think the most note worthy thing about UFC 207 wasn't Ronda losing, it was how attractive Tate looked on the post-game show.
