So then Mattis in response to NK Test today

Quote

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.

We had a small-group national security meeting today with the president and the vice president about the latest provocation on the Korean peninsula.

We have many military options and the president wanted to be briefed on each one of them.

We made clear that we have the ability to defend ourselves and our allies, South Korea and Japan, from any attack and our commitments among the allies are iron-clad. Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam, or our allies, will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming.

Kim Jong-un should take heed of the United Nations security council’s unified voice, all members unanimously agreed on the threat North Korea poses, and they remain unanimous in their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Because we are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but as I said we have many options to do so.

Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen.

We're fucked aren't we?

There was a report earlier today in which Trump that the US will not trade with any nation that has any trade link with North Korea, which has got to be one of the most bullshit statements he's come out with lately. This is the guy that would probably pimp his wife out to Putin if he thought he could make a few bucks out of it.

90% of North Korea's trade is with China. There's no way he's cutting links off with them. There was a very good segment on Last Week Tonight about all the possible scenarios that could happen with North Korea, the most obvious being that if anything happens there it can create a power vacuum in a country with nuclear weapons. China don't want to annoy a country they share a border with that has nukes. Neither does S.Korea. Also because of the (almost comical) levels of Anti-American propaganda that is present in North Korea, attempting to overthrow Kim could result in what is dubbed 'Korean ISIS'

Neil Degrasse Tyson breaking down the foolish Trump administrations bizarre and idiotic attitude to Climate Change.

Also. Was Trump being serious with his speech at the UN?

I'm no Trump fan, but the reason he endures is that he opened up a niche (bullish, apolitical Un-PC staring down of hot button topics) that no other politician is yet to tackle, or match. When there's a terrorist attack, for example, most politicians trot out the 'what a terrible loss of life, but we will not be cowed by terror or let it affect our way of life' line; whereas Trump says 'losers! We will destroy them and END this terror cancer'. And, in general, people are starting to feel a bit cowed, and don't want to act like business as normal, and are drawn into the simplistic black/white emotions of the latter speech.

The same goes for North Korea. People are terrified of being nuked, and aren't that interested in high level diplomacy. Being told that they'll destroy the other side before they can do any damage makes them feel a level of safety or comfort.

Politicians are still talking in their metered, guarded language of the intellectuals and Trump will continue to see some success whilst he talks in black and white, raw emotion and speaks to voters hearts rather than their heads.
