I mentioned i may start a thread last week for Rizin, now they've announced fights i thought it was time. Rizin are ready to put on their second New Year's Eve MMA show, 2 shows over the course of 3 days. It's gonna be a weird and wonderful mix of MMA.

The Quarter finals of the Open-Weight Grand Prix are set. I've left a gap between the two brackets. The winner of each fight will fight in the semi's on New Year's Eve...the final will also be on New Year's Eve.

December 29th

Shane Carwin vs. Amir Aliakbari

Valentin Moldavsky vs. Szymon Bajor

Mirko Crocop vs. Wanderlei Silva

Kaido Hoovelson vs. Tsuyoshi Kosaka

The fact that a 46 year old TK may end up in the ring with Crocop or Wanderlei just sums up Japanese MMA. It's an odd cast of characters, i'll add some bio's closer to the event so get myself and anyone else upto speed.

Roll on NYE.

Cro Cop vs Wandy 3 is happening?! When was this announced?

Two of my all time favourite fighters ever. Obviously when the GP was announced we all knew a Mirko-Wandy fight was a possibility with them both involved. But seeing it there in black and white, it's still a surprise. Never ever thought we'd see a third fight between those two.

And yeah, Carwin's going to run the whole bracket, isn't he? With Carwin, it just feels like a case of him amusing himself until the UFC come knocking again. A few first round KO's here and I can see him being back in the UFC next year sometime. If he's contractually available, that is.

Did UFC ever get in touch with Carwin regarding getting him back on board and Carwin turned down their offer? Or are UFC waiting to see what a 2016 Carwin looks like?

I'm surprised they didn't snap him up, given how shallow HW is and he has a bit of star power.

Yeah, I'd think they'd have just snapped him up straight away. They've got some right shit under contract. They could do a lot worse than taking a chance on 2016 Carwin. At best he'll score some knockouts and you've got an exciting addition to the division. At worst he's not the same and can't hack it, but even then he's still probably got some name value so you could build someone else off him. Plus heavyweight's really shallow, can never hurt to bring new (or old) blood in the mix.

UFC must've reached out, surely. Or he put the feelers out and wasn't keen on what they offered so he's going to go to Japan, smash everyone and return to the negotiating table. Something like that.

It's a shame Mark Hunt's tied up with other shit in the UFC because Hunt vs Carwin would be amazing. Probably the two biggest hitters in heavyweight MMA colliding. Just imagine it!

True.

And speaking of being the size of a tank...here's Gabi Garcia dwarfing Mirko Cro Cop;

I know she's wearing heels but fucking hell that's a big woman. Her arm is almost like prime Cro Cop's leg. And this is the leaner, streamlined Gabi Garcia. She used to be even bigger!

I think there's more to it than Carwin simply not being picked up by the UFC. In all honesty, I don't think Carwin could pass a single piss test in the USADA era.

The guy is pushing 40 and is the size of a tank.

It's absolutely this. Will be fun seeing him in Japan though.

New Year's Eve MMA is alive and well folks:

(from the MMA Bulletin):

Gabi Garcia (3-0) will face Shinobu Kandori (4-1) at #RIZIN2016 on 12/31.

Kandori is a 52-year-old, 5'7, 165 lb former pro-wrestler turned politician. Has not "fought" in 16-years, and those "fights" were mostly fixed/garbage nonsense. This will either be dumb as shit & fixed, or dangerous as shit & scary.

Only in Japanese MMA.

10 years ago they would do stuff like this quite often, yet no one would bat an eyelid. It's utter lunacy to normal folk, but it's commonplace to those who run Japanese MMA promotions. It's a weird dynamic. It's part of its charm, yet at the same time its dark side as well.
