It's amazing how ingrained attitudes like these ones are about women.

I'm not preaching from the pulpit, I'm guilty of it myself, but here we are in 2018, female wrestling has never been in a better place, to the extent where there is talk of Ronda and Charlotte main eventing WM next year, yet when the chips fall they are still basically judged on their appearance.

I mean, have Steve Austin, The Rock, HHH or Undertaker ever been mocked because of their appearance? 

It shouldn't have anything to do with anything.

I think she's a pretty girl and doesn't need all that make up, but it's her choice, and it doesn't have any relevance to her work.

In wrestling your appearance is VERY important.

I can't think of a single industry that "perception is reality" is more relevant. Not just from the performers, but from almost everyone involved in the product.

Austin has enjoyed his fair share of bald bastard jokes; Triple H has spent an entire career mocked for the size of his nose and every time he takes a break from the jumbo juice he’s called fat; The Undertaker is routinely mocked for having the hair of Pat Butcher, the face of a scrambled crepe, the tan of a hangover piss and a pair of spaniels ears for norks; The Rock is literally mocked for having had a boob job.

Wrestling is an aesthetic business. It’s looks, front and centre, despite what the mutants want you to believe.

If we were to not judge women’s acts on their looks, we’d weirdly be doing them a disservice as the first insult of a males act is usually aesthetics related.

Yes, regularly. 

Personally I think it's a shame she, like lots of people, feel the need to cover themselves in makeup to try and reach an 'expectation'. 

People have control over that and make that choice, and so it's not an unreasonable observation even if it says more about the world at large than her as an individual.

You know most women wear make up because they like wearing it? The way people present themselves to the world is usually down to the aesthetic they prefer, not an attempt to meet other people’s expectations.

It seems far more prevalent in some cultures than others because society dictates, to an extent, what we feel comfortable doing as an individual. 

To ignore that people like wareing makeup to excess because that is what is perceived as the social norm I would say is short sighted. 

Even worse in my view are slew of online 'makeup artist' who make a so called job out YouTube videos of how to paint your eyebrows back on with a lump of coal or colour yourself orange.

On here the fellas are mocked for appearances far more than the ladies ever are. Fatt Hardy, Spaghetti head Ziggler, Ken Kennedy and his dental floss arms, Undertaker looking like a dead transvestite, every wrestler with moobs, Cena's weird asymmetrical ears. The comments are vast.

In Paige's case it sticks out more because even though she's always been caked in make up it's a change of style that some would consider to be more in keeping with the other divas and she's meant to be different. The fact she looks like Barbara Cartland playing dress up doesn't help like.

Calm down and keep your fedora on fella.

I dated one of those “make up artists” for 18 months. Just before she turned 21 a company paid her £4000 to do three Instagram posts featuring their products. Sounds pretty good for a “so called job.”

Or Lita who, despite getting the odd run out these days, gets nowhere near the props she deserves for what she did for the women’s division.

Paige is a trail blazer, no doubt, but the women’s division Lita had to navigate was way trickier; it was barely more than soft porn when she started.

Lita and Trish stand out. Lita because she was what she was in spite of the context (and despite often having to pay lip service to what was ‘expected’ of a WWE diva) and Trish because she started out by embodying that context and then became something else.

I genuinely don’t think there’s any two wrestlers alive more influential than those two.
