I take it as a general rule of thumb that, during times of economic duress and government cuts (especially when the Tories are in power), allĀ fines will be enforced as often as they can manage it. They're not giving up that revenue.

Depends if they have the headcount to hire people to enforce. There's often hiring freezing that means headcount and budgets don't align. Also depending on who is doing the enforcing and how much of their job it is these things often aren't as big money spinners as people think. It's like people assuming speed cameras are some great government sponsored scam but actually they're just there to make things safer and don't run at a profit at all. Why do you think so many of them are left without film in them?

Aye, I'm with you there Bacon. It's not that I'm against the principal of it at all - it is littering and most city streets are filthy. It's the same as getting a speeding ticket - you know you've done wrong but still get annoyed when you receive the fine.

@Chest Rockwell Do you have any sources regarding that about speed cameras not being profitable? A quick Google search says that 2 million got handed out last year. Rough estimate is that's Ā£200 million revenue in speeding tickets. It can't be costing *that* much to operate them, surely?

The litter police(of litter Nazis to those they have caught) are all over in Barnsley, and they are prolific in the amount of tickets they gove out on a day to day basis. The frustrating thing about them though is that they will blatently witness a big, manley bloke dropping a fag end and dare not do anything, but if they see a random t'old lass dropping a bus ticket, they are on to her and writing the ticket out like a shot.

I think they would be a brilliant idea, but will only work if they grow some bollocks and fine everyone who drops litter...

When I was gainfully employed with Tesco, we had a couple of incidents of them fining people in the car park. As it was private property (and not registered as a thoroughfare), they were told to leave by our security and the tickets were dismissed.Ā

The company doing it around here got sacked by the council for being a bit overzealous. They were straight on to old fogeys dropping litter by accident but doing fuck all about dog shit which was their top priority.

People letting their dog turd all over and not cleaning it up is something that should lead to a public flogging.

So my three year old son walks into the magazine aisle of Asda, points to the middle shelf and says "skateboard", in that slightly incorrectly pronounced way that three year olds do.

Angry lady almost has my eye out with her pointy finger as lets me know how disgusting it is that a child so young can point to the top shelf and identify "gay porn".

Do Asda even sell gay porn?Ā

Supposedly when I was a lad (about 7 or 8, I think) I was attacked by an old woman smashing her walking stick into me for having a quick glance at some wrestling magazine. She called it "Gay Porn" too. Woman's daughter got her off me but she was supposedly going for it hell for leather with the stick. No charges were pressed.
