Scott Hall showed up on Nitro and set in motion the debut of the nWo. Which is still being ripped off in most promotions right now. Only not as good.

Cant believe its 20 years ago. When they showed up in the WWF as "the poison" that was only 6 years removed from it. Time has went fast.

"Hey yo".

You've stolen my thunder, I was gonna start an nWo thread!

I didn't know anything about the nWo until '97. I had no idea Diesel and Razor had gone because I'd seen video tapes with their names on like Survivor Series '96! Only caught up in '97 when I met a new buddy at college who was into wrestling and would tape it for me. Then I discovered PowerSlam.

I've always been a retrospective viewer of the nWo and so I'm not as hot on it as some. I also think it got really tired really quickly. However there is no denying that those first few months as some of the best wrestling telly ever. Scott Hall's debut promo is awesome, if only because it stopped that fucking match, the angle where Bischoff gets powerbombed at the Bash is great, the Hogan turn is still incredible even now and the angle on Nitro where Nash chucks Rey like a javelin into the side of a production truck (I think) is fucking brilliant.

"You people know who I am. But you don't .. know why .. I'm here."

So many great moments it's impossible to single anything out for me, but the thing that sticks in my mind is just how mental Wrestling became, specifically the crowds, just a sea of people and it looked like everybody had a sign, everybody had either an NWO or Austin T-Shirt, the rabid atmosphere in the buildings. I look back at that time and a lot of the in ring stuff from the Attitude era was awful to be honest, but man what a time to be a fan, couldn't wait to get to school on the Tuesday and discuss happenings, great days.

Personal love for DDP hitting Hall with the Diamond Cutter as Nash turned his back then doing one into the crowd, brilliantly built and being a bit of a DDP fan I just loved it.

More importantly, I want to know who would have won out of Mike Enos and Steve Doll, as it was one of those awesome weird "WCW Hierarchy" matches they'd have where you can see who's more of a jobber than the other.

I reckon Mean Mike would have won as he had a smidgen of a push.

Was Steve Doll ever on TV again after that? I feel like Enos was always kicking about, but don't remember Doll.

Anyway, the new world order of wrestling were superb for me. Highly original (at least in North America I suppose). My WCW watching started roughly around Golbergs debut so the NWO were already established. On retrospective viewing the promos, talent and ideas just feel original. No wonder it pretty much ruined WCW.

It's typical pro wrestling, when someone has a great idea they hammer it into the ground and milk it until it becomes unbearable.

Did Scott Hall write his own promo? I couldn't imagine how exciting weekly TV could be at the time with the 'anything can happen' vibe.

I still can't believe Enos actually got on the PPV at Souled Out 99, doing the job for Ted Bundy. That great PPV where Flair and his useless kid vs knackered Curt Hennig and Fat Barry made the card, and Hogan showed up but didn't have a match booked.

Why were a lot of WWF contracts expiring around this time too? Really helped WCW at the beginning.

Is that to do with their year end coming shortly after WM, possibly end of April. That's a common year end anyway and that period after WM has long been their period for refreshing the roster too.

They probably never considered the possibility of anyone going to WCW unless they didn't want them until Luger jumped. And even then I bet they thought that was Bischoff making his one big splurge.

i'd loved to have paid attention when it was actually happening, even though i was a big wrestling fan i don't think i even became aware of what the nWo was until the WCW vs. nWO game came out for the n64. I've seen all the big moments in retrospect but i wish i'd seen it play out as it was happening.

I've been watching a few Nitro's from '98 though and the WCW were really clutching at straws to recreate the original nWo vibe at that point, in one episode you had the nWo, nWo Wolfpack, LWO and the 1WN, fuck me.

I also didn't really know about this until a couple of years later. I'd given up on WWF wrestling in late 95 because it was shit now, and the last I'd seen of WCW was when they stopped showing it on ITV. someone told me that Razor and Diesel had turned up in WCW and Hogan was a bad guy, and I was interested, but ultimately I thought it was probably bollocks, like my mate having seen Terminator 3 in America. When I got back into wrestling in late 98 the NWO stuff was way passed it's peak, but I loved it because it was still a novelty to see these guys fuck around and even the shit ones were interesting for a little bit. "Virgil's still about? Brilliant!"

why was Virgil even in there? if it had been later when they were letting anyone in there i'd have understood but Virgil was brought in early whilst the nWo was at it's peak. I know the names was a dig at Vince, but how the hell did he wangle it?

He just seemed to "go with" Ted, I suppose. He may have been in quite early but there was fuck all fanfare to him joining like there was with Giant or Syxx.

Think he was in it because of Ted Dibiase, who at first was meant to be financing the NWO and he was his long term bodyguard (although they had split in the WWF) it was assumed he became his bodyguard again.

Then DiBiase left and Bischoff took over they just left him in .

If you ever see his debut, it seemed like Virgil was employed just where the "where's Vince? Bring out Vince" joke, because WCW were getting sued for making it look as if the WWF was invading WCW. Fuck knows why he lasted that long. They should have got rid of him when they were cutting IRS and the Boss Man from the nWo in early 97.
