Online friends are a bit like therapy, I suppose.

Norn Irish and shouty? Yeah, sometimes.

I'm with Pitcos on the idea that without the internet I might try to make more friends in the meatspace - I should at least start with online friends within a bus ride, and move on from there

The idea of talking to someone about issues that you wouldn't with your friends and family is common. Like a passenger on an airplane that may unload all their issues onto the person next to them over a drink. I guess you form habits with your friends and family and certain topics become taboo (like an older brother may tell a 'whining' younger brother to man up, so he then won't confide in the future).
