Paid Members Maverick Posted January 14, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted January 14, 2016 Would love to see Sly pick up an acting Oscar, haven't seen Creed yet, just love the guy.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted January 14, 2016 Awards Moderator Share Posted January 14, 2016 Cheers for doing this thread Wyatt! Watch out for Lion Of The Midlands, he's uncannily good at predicting these things. I haven't seen a lot of the frontrunners yet, so might change some of these once I have. Best film Hard to call, this one, but I'd personally really like it to be Mad Max: Fury Road.Best actorI'd be happy with most of these guys winning - any of them actually, minus probably Redmayne because he's only just had one. But it's got to be Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant, hasn't it?Best actressAnother hard to call one, but the buzz seems to be behind Brie Larson - Room. Haven't seen it, but she was Envy in Scott Pilgrim so that'll do for me. Best supporting actorI really want it to be Mark Rylance - Bridge of Spies because IT'S MARK FUCKING RYLANCE and the man's just inconceivably good, but Hollywood Comeback Stories tell me it's blatantly going to be Sylvester Stallone - Creed. But it should be Rylance.Best supporting actressAlicia Vikander - The Danish Girl. Haven't seen the film but she's supposed to be better than Redmayne in it, and she's fantastic in Ex Machina and Testament Of Youth. Vikander for the win.Best directorI could see it going to Inarritu again (first consecutive-director win since 1951 if he wins this two years on the trot) but how could it not be George Miller - Mad Max: Fury Road? What a feat that film was!Best original songWriting's on the Wall (Spectre). Not that it's especially good but I've never even heard of any of the others, and they can fuck off giving 50 Shades Of Grey an Oscar when 'Lava' from 'Lava' (the short before Inside Out) doesn't even get nominated.Best animationInside Out no question. It should be in there with the Best Picture contenders but this'll have to do. Also, how brilliant is it that Shaun The Sheep's an Oscar nominee?!Best documentaryAmy. Senna got ignored, so in the words of Lor San Tekka, "this will begin to make things right". Also, I caught the first part of it on Channel 4 last week and was transfixed despite not being that interested in Amy Winehouse, which is a good sign. Best adapted screenplayIt'll likely not win, but I'd say The Martian - Drew Goddard. They did a great job adapting this one.Best original screenplayTough category, I'd be happy with any of these. Torn between Bridge of Spies and Ex Machina, but I'll go Ex Machina - Alex Garland.Best cinematographyThe Revenant. Three in a row for Lubezki!Best film editingMad Max: Fury Road. Best visual effectsStar Wars: The Force Awakens. This is partially sentimentality, but there were damn good effects in that film.Best sound editingStar Wars: The Force Awakens, mainly on the presumption Ben Burtt was involved somewhere. The Martian or Mad Max both good shouts, though.Best sound mixingStar Wars: The Force Awakens, 'cause I just want it to win something, and I don't know whether lightsabre sounds and BB-8 count as sound editing or sound mixing.Best production designMad Max: Fury Road.Best costume designCarol. I haven't seen it, but my better half has, and she raved about the costumes afterwards. (I saw Bridge Of Spies instead, so could only comment that the suits and hats looked sharp).Best make-up and hairstylingMad Max: Fury Road. Best animated short filmSanjay's Super Team. Pixar all the way!Best live action short filmDay One. Not a bloody clue.Best animated short subjectClaude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah. How's this different to the other animated short? Is this factual shorts?Best film in a foreign languageSon of Saul - Hungary, because it's the only one I've heard of.Best original scoreThe Hateful Eight - Ennio Morricone. Triumphant return to Westerns and all that. Just don't let Tarantino come up to accept.
ultimo the great
And the nominees are... Best animated short subject Body Team 12 Chau, beyond the Lines Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness Last Day of Freedom Bit of a mix up here, this is the Short Doc category
WyattSheepMask
Thanks for the heads up there Ultimo. I was copy & pasting from BBC and must selected something else by mistake. Fixed in original post
Paid Members Arch Stanton Posted January 14, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted January 14, 2016 Was Mad Max decent then? Very surprised to see it up there after most reviews I heard seemed to think it was average? I'm backing Redmayne for back-to-back wins. Not seen it yet, just my feeling. I'd expect Star Wars to pick up a couple. Diamond Dallas Page must be gutted tonight, he was legitimately backing himself for an Oscar nomination for his Jake Roberts job. WyattSheepMask
We saw The Danish Girl the other night, and everyone in it was really good, he's certainly a contender (has anyone ever won Back to back Best Actor awards?), but I've still got to watch Trumbo and The Revenant. As for DDP, the deluded fool. Btw, that Jake Roberts doc is up on the torrents now for anyone that wants to check it out
The Clint
Would love to see Sly pick up an acting Oscar, haven't seen Creed yet, just love the guy. Yeah same here, always been a huge fan of Stallone. He's going to be on the Jonathan Ross show this Saturday along with Michael Caine. Wossy is pulling out the big guns this week. Briefcase
Mad Max blew me away last year, amazing film that made me go and see it again the next day in the Cinema. Stunning and hope it wins some awards.
ultimo the great
has anyone ever won Back to back Best Actor awards? Spencer Tracey in the 30's and Tom Hanks in the 90's. Jason Robards won Supporting Actor in the 70's back to back. Katharine Hepburn won in 67 & 68 and John Ford won best director for Grapes of Wrath and How Green Was My Valley in 40 & 41 and Ang Lee won in 2005 & 2012 Of the none technical categories there are 2 locks. DiCaprio for Best Actor and Son of Saul in the Foreign Language. The rest are fairly open. So far i've seen very few, Mad Max, Shaun the Sheep, The 100-Year-Old Man...,Cartel Land Best film: The Revenant The Big Short, The Revenant and Spotlight i'd say are the front runners Best actor Leonardo DiCaprio Weak lineup; Danish Girl has had mixed reviews plus he won last year, the others i don't see having a chance of winning. As much as i'm not a fan DiCaprio is the clear front runner Best actress: Brie Larson Lawrence & Blanchett have won recently plus Joy is getting some terrible reviews. Rampling was a shock nom so i can't see her winning. It's Larson or Ronan. Best supporting actor Mark Rylance I wish i could see Stallone winning it but i still think they will go for brit theatre royalty in Rylance Best supporting actress: Rooney Mara It seemed to be between Mara & Vikander but Winslett winning the Golden Globe has changed a few predictions, i still see it as Mara winning. Best director: Alejandro G Inarritu - The Revenant Ensembles are loved by hollywood, so McCarthy or McKay wouldn't be a shock plus Inarritu won last year. I'm still saying Inarritu. Fury Road has a chance Best original song: Writing's on the Wall (Spectre) Anything but Bond or Gaga would be nice Best animation; Inside Out It's between Anomalisa or Inside Out winning with Inside Out the favourite, love to see Shaun The Sheep win Best documentary: The Look of Silence Best adapted screenplay The Big Short - Charles Randolph, Adam McKay Best original screenplay; Inside Out - Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve, Josh Cooley Best cinematography: The Revenant Best film editing: Mad Max: Fury Road Best visual effects: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Best sound editing: Sicario Best sound mixing: Mad Max: Fury Road Best production design: The Revenant Best costume design: Cinderella Best make-up and hairstyling: Mad Max: Fury Road Best animated short film: Sanjay's Super Team Best live action short film: Ave Maria Best Documentary short subject: Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah Best film in a foreign language: Son of Saul - Hungary Best original score: The Hateful Eight - Ennio Morricone
METAL ON METAL
Pretty baffled Paul Dano hasn't got a nomination for his depiction of Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy, he was fantastic. Damn sight better than Fassbender (whom I usually enjoy) in the rather rubbish Steve Jobs.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted January 15, 2016 Awards Moderator Share Posted January 15, 2016 If Fassbender was getting nominated, it should have been for Macbeth. Granted, I didn't get the chance to see Steve Jobs, but he was really, really good as Macbeth.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted January 15, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 15, 2016 Was Mad Max decent then? Very surprised to see it up there after most reviews I heard seemed to think it was average? It was really good! One of the best films of the year for sure. Despite being a resurrection of an old franchise it was still the most original and interesting action film that came out this year.
Paid Members Dead Mike Posted January 15, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted January 15, 2016 Stallone's a dead cert IMO. Not necessarily because of the performance but it's his turn.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted January 15, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted January 15, 2016 Here's my take on things, if I were in charge of the vote:Best film : Mad Max : Fury Road. Because it entertained me the most. Although I did like The Big Short a fierce amount! No, I’ll go with Mad Max Fury Road, because Mad Max Fury Road.Best actor : Leonardo DiCaprio because his was the most fearless performance in my eyes and the cunt never once put his foot on the brakes.Best actress : Brie Larson because she made me cry and utterly, completely depressed in the desired sense. I can’t give higher praise than that.Best supporting actor : The Stallion, because fuck the “art” of it. He’s been Rocky, Rambo, John Spartan, Cobra, Ray Tango, Lincoln Hawk and nobody else in that category was.Best supporting actress : Rooney Mara because she fearlessly and selflessly let a fat man put his nose on her knot and literally inhale her rusty bullet hole into his throat in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for her art and that alone, deserves an award at some stage of her career. Plus she’s utterly wonderful in Carol, which is what it’s all about in the end. Best director : George Miller because I think his vision and the conviction in which he delivered Mad Max was an incredible feat, and his was the only flick out of all mentioned where I sat there throughout thinking “George Miller is cracked! He’s a fucking genius!!!”. Best original song : Don’t really give a plop coz all were unremarkable to be honest, but ‘gun to the temple’ sitch, I’ll go with Manta Ray.Best Animation : Inside Out, because it’s perfect and it changed me and my views on life and parenthood. And it made me cry over and over and over.Best documentary : Cartel Land because my pots were gone watching it and I found it gripping.Best adapted screenplay : Murtz’s Partridge Shrug Gif.Best original screenplay : Ex Machina because Alex Garland.Best cinematography : Mad Max Fury Road because...look at it!Best film editing : Mad Max Fury Road because I love and am a sucker for smash cuts and that had them in abundance.Best visual effects : Mad Max Fury Road because practical and awe inspiring.Best sound editing : Sicario. It was done to perfection and nothing was out of place given the situation presented on screen.Best original score : Junkie XL should be fucking here. No composition on any of the nominees can hold a candle to Redemption from Fury Road, so this is wrong. All wrong. I’ll pick Ennio for the Hateful Eight though because it’s Ennio.
