The Holiday Thread

Not sure if we already have one of these. Basically, I haven't been on holiday this year but am desperate to go overseas next year and am looking for ideas/recommendations. Thinking this could be a good place for peoples to share their experiences and plans and help eachother out.

I was thinking of somewhere like Bulgario, Finland or Montenegro...somewhere in Europe but not as traditional/usual as Germany/Spain/Italy. But at the same time I would love to go to Japan but obviously the price difference between them is pretty huge.

So any suggestions are welcome really. Anyone got any gems? Where should I go?

I'd suggest Wroclaw, Poland. (Pronounced: vrahts-wahf).

Depends on what you want to do, but the main "city" part is lovely. Huge cathedral, tons of pubs/bier halls with breweries on site, many museums, including one of a giant painting that covers a huge circular enclosure.

Fairly friendly place, most locals/younger people speak English as well. I went for a stag doo, although it wasn't a "WOOHOO" type deal, just 4 lads having a chill and a drink, an it was amazing. I believe I'm going back next year hah.

Croatia's great. We did a week in Dubrovnik last month and it was excellent - a lot of cruise groups if you went in the summer, but loads to do and very relaxing depending on what you want more.

My question - I'd like to take the other half away for a night for New Year. Is it possible to get a one-night deal anywhere, and is it ever going to be affordable at that time of year?

I did Dubrovnik the last week of August, and it was brilliant. It was quite busy, but still not excessive. We rented an apartment from Airbnb and walked everywhere and it ended up being quite cheap - I think we spent less than £400 in total during the holiday - including a Game of Thrones tour, the Cable Car, and dinner and lunch out every day.

It was between 28-32 degrees every day!

I would recommend going up the Cable Car just because it was a beautiful sight, and the war museum at the top was also incredibly fascinating. The sea is so clear and blue, and if you can get to Lokrum Island, you definitely should - we spent a day just wandering around (hiking up the big fucking hill in the middle of it) and being in awe at the sights.

Agreed, the Cable Car was fantastic, we couldn't get on in the daytime so went around sunset and it was stunning. Didn't do Lokrum but did kayak around it, which was more than enough!

Oh man, sunset would've been amazing.

Kayaking sounded fun, but there was no way we'd have been able to do it. I was content enough swimming in the bay!

Yeah, Dubrovnik is really cool. I would recommend that too. Went to Slovakia this summer which was really nice also. Did some nature-y sightseeing in the Tatra mountains, and then went to Bratislava which is a lovely city. From Bratislava we took a boat up the river to Vienna which was decent, too.

Right you lot/and some research have convinced me. I'm going to Dubrovnik. I'm thinking of doing a week in Dubrovnik and a few days in Kotor in Montenegro.

Splendid.

It's split into two parts, really - the newer part, which is where the port and most of the hotels are, and then the Old Town, which is where I spent most of my holiday. The Old Town is beautiful, and there are so many amazing restaurants there.

Since meeting my partner a couple of years back I have had a fair few great holidays, I'd always recommend Stalis in Crete - great food, great weather, amazing people and very little trouble. Next year we're off there again in July and to Cape Verde in January. If all goes to plan in 2017 we're off to the Maldives so we can hopefully see the sea of stars.

Can't go wrong with Florence. Venice has got the uniqueness but when we went Florence was definitely our favourite place.

You've got the river, the Ponte Vecchio, the Dante connection, Michelangelo's David, the Uffizi, the Boboli gardens... I'd go back. Take me with you!

Has anybody used Travelup.co.uk to book flights?  I bought 8 flights to Washington DC with them last night, checked the times 4 or 5 times, as did my partner.  My confirmation email then came through with a completely different flight time.  I emailed them and called them this morning and they are refusing to accept any mistake, claiming that we booked the wrong flight and that's that.  Not happy at all.

Never been there but thanks for saying you WENT somewhere. You don't "Do" a place, you go there.
