After Ronnie being knocked out of the World Snooker Championship today by someone not even ranked, that has to be up there as one of the biggest shocks.

That's assuming Snooker is a sport. 👀

It is quite a big upset. But to be fair, he was a professional for four years before and he did beat Mark Selby at last years UK Championships. Who was world number 1 at the time. Arguably just as big as an upset considering how great Selby has been the past 10 years.

It's a seismic one for a few reasons -

Despite not playing in every single tournament this season, O'Sullivan has won several trophies and made several finals, tied Stephen Hendry's triple-crown title record, passed the 1000 century mark and recording an insane amount of prize money and shooting up to the world number one ranking. It could be argued that even at this late stage and with his record that he's playing the best snooker of his career to date.

Cahill's no slouch, as proved by some of his previous scalps, but his amateur status means he doesn't even have a world ranking, he had to qualify through three matches to even get to the Crucible. He even had to pay an entry fee into the competition because he's not technically a professional.

I had a feeling Cahill might pick up a frame or two, but playing in your first Crucible match is one thing - to play it against Ronnie and the pressure and the fear factor that has crushed so many other players before they even start the match, the sheer bottle to take the game to him, make some fucking difficult pots, to hold his nerve when the fightback came, his bollocks are like space hoppers. And he didn't play a slow game or rely on trying to frustrate Ronnie with drawn out frames and safety battles - he attacked it from the very first frame, which is even more remarkable. It was a fucking superb match to watch.

Sport's mental as well as physical. And mentally, that's one of the best sporting performances I've seen. Certainly in the snooks at least.

Football is a hard one, domestically anyway as you always get upsets- which makes it hard to determine what is actually considered an upset.

This is fun to look back on, considering what happened 8 months after I posted this!
