Michael_3165
This has been done but I always like to do another version every few years as I really want to find some real hidden gems... At the moment I have been getting more into NJPW, NOAH, AJPW etc. So what are your top ten favourite matches? Mine are probably... Nakamura vs Ibushi - Wrestle Kingdom 9 - January 4th 2015 - NJPW This was just a stunning piece of work. For two guys that I hadn't followed they drew me into their word with wonderful performances. JR and Striker on commentary made it easier for me to 'get' the story being told - the wiley veteran versus the up and coming future star. I loved Nakamura's persona, his mannerisms and ring work being extremely unique. The final stretch - including an insane german from the top rope from the ring apron on the outside - was awesome! Kenta Kobashi vs Mitsuharu Misawa - 20th Jan 1997 Classic matches all round from these two. What I appreciate most here was the slow build leading to an intense finish. Kobashi is a master of selling, making me genuinely care whether or not he is injured. The history of the match - including the famous tag bouts alongside Taue and Kawada - really added depth to the overall presentation. Stiff wrestling at it's best. A little awkward to watch in hindsight though. Edge and Mysterio vs Benoit and Angle - WWE No Mercy 2002 This was the first match in WWE that really 'wow'd me from a work rate perspective. Sure Austin and Hart had classics as did Steamboat and Savage but it was the sheer work rate that blew me away. Some cool little sequences and reversals with a great climax to finish. These are four of the best and it really showed here. Aries and Strong vs Briscoe Brothers - Unified ROH UK I have never been a RoH fan... thats not to say I don't appreciate it but accessibility wise I am not that good with technology and didn't want to fork out for dvd copies. This is just a great piece of action... sure psychology goes out of the window a little bit here but the near falls and crowd made this one hot. William Regal vs Chris Benoit - Brian Pillman Memorial Show Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose - Elimination Chamber 2015 Bret Hart vs Steve Austin - WrestleMania 13 All add more in a bit
Jon-Carr_92
In no particular order. So here goes. Mikey Whiplash v Trent Seven ICW: Paperboy 18/4/15. One of the most insane (pun intended!) matches I've ever seen in the flesh. Shawn Micheals v John Cena on Raw in London in 2007 that goes for 45 minutes. TLC 2 from WrestleMania X-Seven Styles v Joe v Daniels from Unbreakable 2005 (Yep, 10 years this year. Can you believe?) THAT'S a crash course in how to do a triple threat! Gail Kim v Taryn Terrell - Last Knockout Standing from Slammiversary XI Undertaker v Shawn Micheals - Streak v Career from WrestleMania XXVI Eddie Guerrero v Brock Lesnar from No Way Out 2004 Alpha Males v The Magnums on a Pro EVW show last year was incredible to watch. Again, I don't know the rules on if Indy shows I saw count, but I bloody am because it was 25 minutes of incredible! Sami Zayn v Adrian Neville from NXT: R Evolution. And last but by no means least: the greatest match of all time. Something many a wrestler on this and many shore wish to emulate if they can't surpass... Melina v Alica Fox! Paid Members air_raid Posted June 13, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted June 13, 2015 Fucking hell, this is a challenge, narrowing it down to just 10, from the sheer volume of matches I've watched and loved from over 20 years from a variety of promotions, but I'll do my best. I don't usually contribute to "list-a-mania" threads where there's fuck all discussion, but I'll do so, for the challenge of picking my 10. All of these are chosen either because of emotional investment (i.e. caring about who wins) or getting swept up in the story the wrestlers told. In no particular order - that would be impossible. * The Royal Rumble, Royal Rumble 1992 - this is my favourite match of all time and there's no having to describe it for anyone that's seen it. It's a phenomenal performance from Ric Flair who is permitted to go over the entire fucking roster, but it's far from a one man show, as Bulldog, Boss Man, Randy Savage, Jake Roberts, Roddy Piper, Hogan and Sid all do their bit to help tell Flair's story, all supported by the greatest commentary of all time from The Brain. If you don't think this match is amazing, you're not being fair to Flair. War Games, Wrestle War 1992 - I love this match so much because it's the simplicity of (apologies, you won't like this) the best heel group in WCW history in my opinion, up against the companys top babyfaces at the time. Violence, bloodshed, drama. Bret Hart VS Shawn Michaels, WWF title, Survivor Series 1992 - this is the first time I really paid attention to the storyline. Bret Hart, the fighting WWF Champion, "burning the candle at both ends" according to The Brain, up against the cocky new Intercontinental champ on the roll of his life, nothing to lose. Hitman never once going for the Sharpshooter and keeping it as the final ace up his sleeve was a big deal to me watching the match as a child, and boy did he need it in the end. Every time I watch this match, I STILL believe that Shawn's going to beat him. Davey Boy Smith VS Shawn Michaels, One Night Only - I was there, and I was passionately into the result. I hated Shawn at the time and screamed my lungs out for Bulldog.... then I had my heart broken. I love wrestling so much because it's able to make me care so much. Kurt Angle VS Chris Benoit, WWE title, Royal Rumble 2003 - Chris Benoit was my favourite wrestler. I knew going into this match that he had no fucking chance of winning because they'd spelled out loudly that Angle would wrestle Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania since the summer, and the story involving the latter going into the PPV had done nothing to dissuade me. Through the match, I gradually got more and more wrapped up in the match and come the end, when Benoit locked in the final Crossface, I "KNEW" he was about to win the belt. Utterly, 1000% sure. Out of my chair cheering. The he gets himself beat. Gimp. Mitsuharu Misawa VS Kenta Kobashi, GHC title, Navigate For Evolution 2003 - The match on its own merit, bell to bell, is not the best match the two ever had with each other. However the backstory between the two makes the emotion. The fact that Kobashi has never beaten Misawa in a singles title match. The fact that Kobashi has been kept waiting for his GHC title run, the fact both men are in the autumn of their career, and the fact we're all aware that this is probably going to be their last big match against each other. The story that supports it is enough to sweep me up in it, but it's my favourite home straight of all time. Lariat, kick out. Brainbuster, kick out. Burning Hammer - kick out of that, bitch. Samoa Joe VS Austin Aries, ROH title, Final Battle 2004 - This match is one of the most compelling matches I've ever seen. The performance of Joe from start to finish takes you on a ride from "Joe getting another successful title defence against the pushed midcarder du jour" to "he's giving him a good fight here" to "Fuck me, Aries might beat him here!" There are several moments where Joe's signature spots backfire and you get caught up in "Joe's knackered" (not unlike Hart/Michaels referenced above) or "Has he underestimated Aries here?" and the storytelling surrounding Aries' attempts at the brainbuster is sublime. They do such a good job of building up that brainbuster, the people in the building go fucking mental when Aries gets Joe overhead. After he hits it, they're going batshit when Aries climbs up the ropes for the 450 because they already know he's won. Everything about the match, from the beginning to the finish to the elongated ringing of the bell, the metaphorical "the King is dead" moment, is just perfect for me. Amazing. Shawn Michaels VS Kurt Angle, WrestleMania XXI - I just get completely caught up in the match, because I genuinely feel that they're not just fighting to prove to the other that they're the better man, or that they're the best at the time, but that they're the best ever. And God help me, I ended up cheering for Shawn to hold on at the end. But he didn't. Bryan Danielson VS Nigel McGuinness, Unified - This is essentially One Night Only revisited, cheering for the English hero to beat the guy that's obviously that bit better than him, with a title on the line. Again, I was there, and again I had my heart broken. I was front row too, so my despair is visible when I re-watch it on DVD. Which is bittersweet, natch. Hiroshi Tanahashi VS Kazuchika Okada, Invasion Attack 2013 - Watching New Japan live gave my fandom a real shot in the arm and when I watched this match on the morning of WrestleMania, I was on the edge of my seat. I was 100% emotionally invested in the result because when Okada had his first title reign terminated by Tana, I worried that was it for him as a major player, and having been present for his win in the 2012 G1, he quickly had become a guy I cheered for. The home straight LITERALLY had me on the edge of my seat and when Okada won, I LITERALLY jumped for joy. My mate thought I was losing my mind. Objectively they might have had "better" matches but this is my favourite because I was most emotionally into it, even more watching it on iPPV than I was when I saw them fight in person in the 2013 G1. Probably because the latter was so blatantly going time limit draw, and then they did. Actually I knocked that out surprisingly quickly, in the end. Maybe I'm forgetting something. I can think of a couple of near-misses but right now, I'm pretty happy those are my favourites. * Except that first comes first.
The Guvnor
These immediately spring to mind, probably at the expense of many (!) other deserving candidates.... Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat vs. Kenta Kobashi & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi (AJPW, 5/1992) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KOvSvhxoRk I'm sure many are already familiar with this one, but the heat and heel brutality especially are wonderful. Vic Faulkner vs. Mick McMichael (Digbeth, 22/3/1980) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue8XsuCgA1E A great face vs. face match with a little bit of everything thrown in. Tremendous chemistry between them. Ken Joyce vs. Steve Grey (Crawley, 9/8/1975) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guBtCq14ncU Excellent technical match, again between two blue eyes. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Wrestlemania 10) No link. Great in-ring chemistry and excellent storytelling. Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat vs. British Bulldogs (AJPW, 6/12/1989) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzWq1Sp3_BY Terrific exhibition of back and forth athleticism and 'fuck you' one upmanship. Tremendous, especially considering Dynamite was pretty much fucked by this time. Eddie Riley vs. Ian McGregor (Aylesbury, 15/12/1984) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nJRpHjGaW4 Another fun technical match. Some really nice, smooth moves, counters and sequences. Midnight Express vs. Rock & Roll Express (Wrestlewar 90) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xz8y31_49-90-02-25-midnight-express-vs-rock-roll-express-wrestlewar_sport My second favourite tag match, behind the Can-Ams vs. Kobashi & Kikuchi. Just masterful performances on both sides. Add Cornette to the mix and it's even better. They had it absolutely down to a T by this point. Robbie Baron vs. John Naylor (Crawley, 2/8/1975) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTvA0WrorPs Great athleticism and tremendous skill on both sides. Excellent technical wrestling. Jeff Kaye vs. Jon Cortez (Walton On Thames, 29/3/1980) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en-tTQgmDTM This one takes patience to watch. It's not the sort of thing you can half-watch, as you'll miss the bits that thread it all together. Great technical wrestling and well worth the effort to get all the way through. Jim Breaks vs. Zoltan Boscik (Nottingham, 2/12/1972) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqotWAZ4UR8 I'd been a wrestler for around 10 years when I first saw this match, and I marked out for it big time. Heat, heat, heat and more heat, and if it's anything like my first viewing you almost forget it's a work, wanting Boscik to win! An honourable mention goes to Steve Grey vs. Clive Myers. I couldn't pick one match from their televised series of many. Their in-ring chemistry was absolutely phenomenal. If you don't check out any other British wrestling footage, try and get hold of some of their work together. Just tremendous.
Paid Members air_raid Posted June 13, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted June 13, 2015 JR and Striker on commentary made it easier for me to 'get' the story being told - the wiley veteran versus the up and coming future star. I found that funny as fuck when my mate told me about JR's "this kid has a future" twaddle. The wily veteran, 35, vs the up and coming future star, 33. They are poles apart in terms of how established they are in New Japan since Ibushi has spent years fucking around in the indies, and Nakamura got pushed to the moon young and won the big belt at 24. But it doesn't escape the fact that Ibushi's shot is NOW, not the future. "This kid" indeed. This is one of those "better" matches I referred to earlier. Opinion seems a bit split as to whether this or the 1999 version is better, but I have their last match as my favourite, for reasons stated. I was there, and we were all going mental. This was the Briscoes third - and we all knew, final - shot at the Gen Next lads, and everyone I spoke to was convinced that the Briscoes had to win the titles, but during the match it became clear we all wanted Aries & Strong to retain, and were elated when they did. More of that emotional investment I mentioned in my post, and this was one of the small number of "near-misses" I mentioned. For many years I considered that title match immediately followed by Danielson/McGuinness as the best two matches back-to-back that I had seen live, ever.... until I started going to New Japan live. spotlightmagnet1
Probably not a definitive list, but a top ten of matches I can think of and not in order: 1. Shawn Michaels vs. Jeff Jarrett- In Your House 2 Caught this the other night and was blown away at how much I enjoyed this match. Both men exhumed cockiness and athleticism to ridiculous degree and had the fans eating out the palm of there hands. Michaels doing the Fargo strut and a butt wiggle to mock Jarrett made him look edgy compared to people like Smoking Gunns at the time. Stands the test of time. 2. British Bulldog vs. Owen Hart- Raw 1997. Finals of the European title. I've written the reasons I love this match and why it's an underrated classic before, but both men hold together a technical and emotional masterclass. The crowd is fantastic too and the match was just brilliant to watch. 3. Samoa Joe vs. Chris Sabin- Unbreakable 2005 Sabin was a overlooked master of X division matches, and this match was him at his best (although I love his later heel work) and Joe was white hot, even hotter property than he seems now. Both men put together an amazing big man vs little man, and though this was clearly setting Joe up for a feud with Styles, Sabin more than made this match a real edge of seat stuff. 4. EC3 vs. Rockstar Spud- Impact 2015 Yeah, that's right. I was there, I bought a ticket. And after this match came on, I was more than pleased. I loved all of this match, EC3's arrogance, Spud getting the whole arena to sing the British national anthem, Tyrus and Anderson getting taken out, JB getting in his shot, and Spud's babyface comebacks were all captivating and had your heart in your mouth. I would rate this match as one of the best they ever produced. 5. Ken Joyce vs. Johnny Saint- WOS 80s? I really enjoyed alot about WOS, and Saint was one of the tops. I had heard about ken Joyce attending alot of Premier Promotion events in Bournemouth in which they hold a Ken Joyce trophy every year. And after this one match, I could see why he was held in high regard. Technical fun. Fun I think is definitely the key word, this was just enjoyable to behold. 6. Bryan Danielson and Eddie Edwards vs. KENTA and Ishimori- NOAH European Navigation I remember being there, Danielson getting instant heat by telling us we couldn't sing 'Final Countdown' and then just sitting there with my jaw on the floor. The whole match was beautifully laid out, brutal at times but never lulling. Simple put, 2 guys the world knew were great teaming with 2 guys wanting to prove they belong and going all out. Incredible. 7. Shawn Michaels vs. HHH- Summerslam 2002 Michaels had been gone for so long, when he came back and said he wanted a match with HHH, I groaned. I had to expect the worst, cause Hunter was full blown muscle and had been really lacklustre imo. Meanwhile, I wasn't sold into Brock then (how fucking stupid I was) and in general, Raw was pretty shitty at the time. Michaels I worried about. But then this mach happened and it was remarkable. Michaels looked a bit older, a bit pudgier but once he started in the ring, he was one of the greatest once again. HHH was absolutely deplorable too, probably one of his best works. The post match had me cringing for weeks. Just a spectacle to behold. 8. Hart Foundation vs. Steve Austin, Ken Shamrock, Goldust and LOD- In Your House Canadian Stampede This match would've been very good if not great, but what makes it an all time classic was the situation and the crowd. The Calgary crowd going completely apeshit just at the entrance of Brian Pillman and Jim Neidhart was just a taster. All men in the match excelled in telling a great story, the story of Austin just wanting to get his hands on Bret or anyone, while the Harts played heely cool faces was just a special feeling, you won't get that feeling for a long time again. 9. Undertaker vs. Mankind King of the Ring 96 Funnily enough, I always used to prefer the Boiler Room Brawl, but this match has grown on me in leaps and bounds. I think it was to do with this was the match in which Undertaker stopped the slow 'methodical' movements and seemed so genuinely filled with rage it came through completely. Mankind meanwhile was creepy and scary, and in the ring the two assembled one of the finest feuds and matches ever. There were so many highlights but the one I have is Taker smashing Mankind's face in with huge overarm punches one after another. 10. Robbie Brookside vs. James Mason- Bournemouth 2012 (?) One I was there live for. Premier Promotions always put on a fun show with the traditional wrestling rules, but this one Easter holiday had a 'title' match between Brookside and Mason. Brookside worked on the arm the first round, Mason went after the leg the second. They built up the tension and even the most ardent kid was engrossed by the technical masterclass on display. That's no exaggeration, everyone was watching and picking a fav to cheer. The match built up and went to a great finish in which Mason went over 2 falls to 1. John Freemantle got on the mic and said 'We'll never have the opportunity to see a true British match like this again...' Sad but true, but I saw this one and anyone else who did should demand from someone to see another again.
FUM
I've always felt the Unbreakable triple threat was massively overrated. I don't know if it's because I seen so many comments about how good it was before I watched it and had built up a high expectation but it just didn't deliver as much as people claim it did in my opinion. Good match but they've all had better.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted June 14, 2015 Awards Moderator Share Posted June 14, 2015 I’ve had a think about this and come up with my list. Very much a 'personal list' as I've tried to include most of my favourite wrestlers in it. 1) Undertaker vs. Triple H, WrestleMania XXVII I wrote all about this match in my ‘Mania Match A Day’ thread back in March, so I won’t repeat myself, but this is my favourite match of all time. The build-up, the feel of it being something huge, the spectacle of the entrances, the chill of Taker walking out to Johnny Cash, the match itself, the story of the Streak and whether Undertaker would ever lose, THAT near-fall… it made me believe again. 2) TLC II, WrestleMania X-Seven The peak of ‘stunt’ wrestling in my mind – not necessarily because it was the biggest stunts (though I defy anyone not to be impressed by Edge and Jeff’s suspended Spear or Matt and Bubba being shoved off the ladder by Rhyno through all those tables) – but because they were huge stunts in front of an enormous, hot crowd, in the virtual culmination of one of the defining tag team rivalries. This match left me in awe the first time I saw it, and it still does. 3) Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage, WrestleMania VII There’s something about WrestleManias that end in a 7. Anyway, huge stakes, huge match, best ending ever. Warrior’s never looked better, but it was Savage’s night. 4) Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels, Bad Blood 1997 The original Hell In A Cell and still the best in my opinion. Both men played their parts excellently, and THAT’S GOTTA BE KANE is one of the best run-ins there’s ever been. 5) Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H, Summerslam 2002 When I rewatched it for ‘Triple H Reviews’ a couple of years ago, it had lost some of that initial buzz I had watching at the time. But seeing Shawn in his comeback match, not knowing whether his back would last, and the way Triple H targeted that very thing, told a superb story. A great feelgood match with a proper “ooh, you BASTARD!” post-match. 6) Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart, Summerslam 1994 I haven’t watched this for a while, but I remember being enthralled by it from start to finish. Bret was great but it’s Owen I remember most clearly. Probably my favourite ever Cage match. 7) The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family, Elimination Chamber 2014 Helped massively by the fact it had been really well built up and hadn’t had 200 prematches before it, this was just a brillian six man brawl – the Shield at their best. Still miss ‘em. 8) Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn, Living Dangerously 1999 I know, I know. If I watched it again now I’d probably cringe and be unimpressed. But the first time I saw this match was the first time I’d seen one of those ‘move-counter-move-counter-move-counter-move-counter-standoff-crowdapplauds’ sequences and I loved them. This was during my ‘movez~!’ phase. I’m over it now but I thought I’d recognise it. 9) ECW Originals vs. New Breed, ECW TV 2007 An under-rated classic in my opinion. Just the right length, just the right amount of chaos… maybe not the right result, but in this Extreme Rules match, WWE did ECW better than ECW itself. 10) AJ Styles vs. Sean Waltman, TNA Something 2005 I wanted to include Styles and X-Pac somewhere on this list because they’ve both had loads of matches I really enjoyed. The fact that they had a match against each other does me nicely.
Paid Members air_raid Posted June 14, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted June 14, 2015 8) Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn, Living Dangerously 1999 I know, I know. This was during my ‘movez~!’ phase. I’m over it now but I thought I’d recognise it. In fairness, while very much of its time, this was at the time quite the innovative match. The reversal sequences involved weren't the same series of roll ups copied from Eddie and Malenko than a billion matches since have replicated to diminishing returns, but things that fans of "The Big Two" like myself simply hadn't seen before. Lynn avoiding a Van Dam sweep and legdropping his head onto the chair in particular made me sit up. OK there was no story, really, but it was back and forth and exciting. It does lose a bit of impact for me with the bizarre ending with the ref trying to go rogue, make his own rules up and give the belt to Lynn after the time limit runs out, before the restart. RVD should have lamped him for that afterwards. I know what they were going for, "Wow, look how hard it was for RVD to beat Jerry Lynn!" and build for the rematch for Hardcore Heaven. Personally I thought said rematch was a bit of a meandering mess and went too long, and they really went too far trying to spell out "It's REALLY HARD for RVD to beat Jerry Lynn.... but he does in the end." But the first was very good for its time. And for RVD.
King Coconut
3) Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage, WrestleMania VIIThis would take all of my top 10 spots. I was still a child but this is the closest wrestling ever came to making me cry.
Paid Members gadge Posted June 15, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted June 15, 2015 I was at two of Raid's top 10. I cheered for Angle vs Michaels at Wrestlemania 21, and for Danielson vs McGuinness. These are both matches that would make my top 10 also, probably accentuated by getting the results I wanted. Oh yes.
Moderators PowerButchi Posted June 15, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 15, 2015 I hated Angle vs Michaels. Real "My turn, your turn, let's have an epic" shite. It's not organically good, they went out there with a "Let's have a massive epic match and we'll do all this stuff" and it does nothing for me. It's all "Go, go, go", you have to suffer through Shawn Michaels doing his best impression of when Rik Mayall would do his "acting" on Bottom Live shows while he was in the ankle lock, and it just annoys me. It's like they read in a book "This is what makes a great match. All this stuff, all these spots, all these false finishes. Lets do them in this order and get pops" and just went out and did that stuff instead of having a match which is great because it builds, it makes sense and is just an orginally fantastic match. It was worked fast and hard, as opposed to worked smart. Now Angle seemingly has an issue with working smart so needs to be reigned in sometime before he gets all Davey Richards, arguably his best matches were with Jarrett in TNA who's the kind of worker who'll slow it down and let the work breathe so it has time to make an impact upon you and mean something, but Shawn Michaels is apparently great at wrestling and was the veteran so he should have done it. It was like cosplay of what people would say makes a great match. Epics are special and happen naturally, they aren't created on purpose. And it was just so obvious they went out there with the "This is going to be an epic match as we're going to do A,B,C (without thinking about what goes between A, B and C) that it didn't work for me. Paid Members gadge Posted June 16, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted June 16, 2015 That's not the first time I've seen that match criticised in that way, and I do understand why having seen it back a few times, but having been there screaming for Michaels to tap (and KNOWING it was over when Angle got the grapevine Ankle Lock, one of if not the first time it was used) I can't go against the match personally
