Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted April 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2015 I was watching Dumb and Dumber to the other day and it got me thinking about comedy sequels and how hard they are to get right, if you make it more over the top it can end up a terrible parody of itself, if it's not over the top enough it would be boring, if you change the jokes too much it doesn't feel like the original and the worst option of all is using pretty much all the same jokes. Â Mike Myers must be decent at it because Austin Powers: The spy who shagged me is the best of the trilogy and I really like Wayne's World 2. Â Are there any really good examples of comedy sequels? Is there even any point in them, were Anchorman 2 or dumb and Dumber to even successful? Both were based on absolutely beloved films.
Paid Members extacy of farts Posted April 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2015 I always thought stuff like Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Airplane etc had good sequels despite using the same sort of gags but alot more enjoyable than the more modern films like Inbetweeners, Anchorman etc.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted April 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2015 I think Airplane 2 was brilliant, as were both Naked Gun sequels. 22 Jump Street was as good as the original, in my oul opinion.
Paid Members JNLister Posted April 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2015 Never realised till recently that Airplane II was written and directed by a completely different crew to the originals.
Juan Manforce
22 Jump Street and Hot Shots! Part Deux are the first that come to mind for good ones, nice to see they've already been mentioned. I struggle to think of any past that, I'm sure there are some I'm blanking on though.
Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted April 27, 2015 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2015 I always thought stuff like Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Airplane etc had good sequels despite using the same sort of gags Those are great shouts, I guess they reason they work is because it's all about the gags not really the story, as long as you can keep up the same pace of silly gags it's ok, Whereas others have to try to make a whole story that compliments and adds to the first one. gbacon85
A good shout for a strong comedy sequel is the criminally underrated Addams Family Values. An excellent little film. Â Airplane II is just great, the scene where he's talking through the window that you think is a TV screen and then he opens the door gets me evertime. Dr.PeterVenkman
Addams Family Values as gbacon said and Hot Shots Part Deux both piss on the originals
Paid Members Nostalgia Nonce Posted April 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 27, 2015 Surprised to see so much love for Airplane II. It's got a few good gags, but it's really weak compared to the original.
Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted April 28, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 28, 2015 I loved Dudley Moore's "Arthur" film, but check out the second one. What the f*ck happened there? Quality dipped unbelievably. Even had Chris De Burgh doing the main song. I mean, really?!?
Paid Members Nick Soapdish Posted April 28, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 28, 2015 I thought The Inbetweeners 2 was better then the first. I liked Anchorman 2, but no where near as good as the first. Frankly, I am scared for Zoolander 2 at this point
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted April 28, 2015 Moderators Share Posted April 28, 2015 I think you should be! Â Zoolander was a classic, but I'm always sceptical of sequels coming a long time after the original(s). Â I am unashamedly a big fan of the American Pie franchise.. the core films anyway. Not the shitty spinoffs with Eugene Levy and no-one else from the originals. Â I think they did a good job with those.
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted April 28, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 28, 2015 Yeah American Pie 2 is really good, there's a big drop-off in quality after that though. Â Agree about Inbetweeners 2 being better than the original too. Â Not seen it for years but remember enjoying Beverley Hills Copy 2 almost as much as the original. Â Home Alone 2 wins though. As always.

Like Dumb and Dumber To, it smacks of all involved needing/wanting a pay day and a much needed hit to their name. Â Jim Carrey was on Howard Stern a few months back basically saying that nobody is willing to throw money at him anymore.
