Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted March 26, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 26, 2015 So, as Chokeout suggested, here’s the video editing thread. I don’t know if I’m the best person to start this, as I’ve only recently started to doss around with anything like this — most of what I’ve been doing is importing vids to photoshop as frames, and making gifs. I’ve stretched myself a little bit by learning some timeline and keyframe stuff, and some esoteric glitch art (using the ImageGlitch app, and also through rendering old gifs I’ve made as mp4, and running them through hacked video codecs), but now I’d like a bit more control over the animation of videos. Specifically, I’m hoping to use bezier paths to animate cutout objects around my images, something I’m stunned Photoshop is lacking — maybe they want people to pay for a different software (After Effects) for this functionality. As I said, I’m just tossing around, and hoping to pick up some workable stuff for my CV — my main interests are making gifs out of horror, porn, and exploitation movies, and animating/glitching/otherwise messing with still images. I have left a couple of things in the form of a video, mainly because of bizarre sound glitches, but I feel like that’s something I want to work on more. Paid Members chokeout Posted March 26, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 26, 2015 Photoshop is actually light years ahead of where it used to be with video integration and animation, They've added loads to it but at the end of the day, it's still a photo editing programme and not video / animation software. Have you tried using Premiere or have you dived straight into After effects instead? The bulk of my day to day work is design and video / motion graphic, the majority of it is really boring corporate stuff but i do little bits of work for PCW / HXC now and again. Basic animation stuff Animated match intros Based on whatever the show theme was. HXC Really basic 3d camera movement and just built a really basic 3d scene PCW Bit more complex with 3d models and 2D footage / masks chucked in PCW / ROH announcement Seems a lot more basic, mainly greenscreen footage but I had to redraw and build the logos for both companies from scratch in After Effects using Element 3D so loads of work using 3d cameras and lighting for something that looks simple. Couple of random trailers / Opening videos HXC PCW
Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted March 26, 2015 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 26, 2015 I haven't done either yet, as I've had a busy few days — would you recommend Premiere first? The bezier paths are my main interest, but any/all video editing experience would be good.
Paid Members chokeout Posted March 26, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 26, 2015 Premiere is a good step between photoshop and after effects for animation. There will be a few things you can't do in it but you should be able to use bezier paths for smoother animation and key framing.

Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted March 27, 2015 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 27, 2015 Possibly a ridiculous related question, but does anyone know anything about tolerances for VHS tapes? I'm looking to seriously distress some tapes, in order to create glitches and fuckery — this might even extend to running video onto tapes, fucking with them (heating/freezing/magnetizing), and reimporting the results. I feel like a mad scientist, and I don't know why this interests me so much.
Paid Members chokeout Posted April 1, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 1, 2015 Depends on the quality of the tape. They go brittle very easily with age and cold but you can get some cool effects with magnets (Be careful because if its strong enough you can pretty much wreck the tape) If you really want to play with the effects you can probably pick up an older T2T editing deck dirt cheap off ebay which will give you control of the playback speed for some cool effects. If you really want to play with magnets rip an old speaker out of a hi fi and use that manually moving it towards the tape deck. should give you some cool purples / greens. Oh and if you can buy some ex-rental tapes online. those things were built to last.

Thanks — I went to a proper shady store (DVD Explosion!) yesterday and got some cheap tapes still in their plastic — Hardy Boyz, Foley's Cheap Pops, and a dodgy looking Christmas cartoon compilation, of the sort that tight parents used to buy their kids and say "Look! Disney!". Sourced an analogue-to-USB convertor, and I'm picking up one of my grandad's old VHS players tonight. Here's where I keep my shit, anyway

The bezier paths are my main interest, but any/all video editing experience would be good. Premiere is amazing, but doesn't do bezier curves - the closest you'll get is a garbage matte (which is a mask) that goes up to 16 points, but it's not curved like beziers. So it's fine for basic box shaped masks (or a mask that 16 straight points can cover). It does 4, 8, and 16 points. All points can be keyframed. But there are a few workarounds to cheat it: http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/keyframe-tips-and-tricks-in-premiere-pro/ You need to use AFX masks for proper bezier curves. Paid Members chokeout Posted April 1, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 1, 2015 Could be wrong but he's using Bézier curves to make smooth motion on key frames, which Premiere can do ( rather than to cut out objects or make shapes)
Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted April 1, 2015 Author Paid Members Share Posted April 1, 2015 Yeah, what chokeout said - not really had any trouble with masks, more issues with interesting motion paths
Paid Members herbie747 Posted April 2, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted April 2, 2015 Ah yeah, you can make curved motion paths in Premiere. I thought you meant using bezier curves for tracked masks - i.e. rotoscoping.
