Drfunke
Straight off the bat, Sean o'haire with his 'I'm not telling you something you don't already know...' . Seemed like a cool psychological thing but just went flat. Â Nathan Jones had some Kl build up.... And then was Shit.... Â What do you fine folk remember
Liam O'Rourke
Glacier is a prime example. Vignettes that ran for months like the guy was going to lead the company and be a major star, but he just wasnt equipped, and given the Sub-Zero knock-off nature of the character I'm not sure it could ever have been more than it was. Paid Members air_raid Posted March 15, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 15, 2015 Does Mr Anderson in TNA count? I asked because it was so OBVIOUS to those of us watching, who knew it was Anderson/Kennedy, that he couldn't possibly live up to the hype that TNA was giving to him coming in. Hulk Hogan hyped up the "mystery" débutante with words to the effect of "this guy literally could walk in the door tomorrow and take the World Heavyweight title." So, in advance you've got an insane level of hype for a level of talent that maybe was not available on the "free agent" scene. In retrospect, the fact that Hogan's talking about Anderson makes the title, the champion at the time he was talking (still AJ Styles, I think) and the whole fucking company look minor league.  Seriously... Mr Kennedy, with what amounted to a completely average career in WWE, could just "walk in the door tomorrow" and become top guy in the company. Wow, Hulkster, that company sounds like the drizzling shits.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted March 15, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 15, 2015 I could be wrong, but weren't TNA hoping to sign someone big from WWE, and had Hogan prepare that promo as a sort of general claim prior to the debut show of the Hogan/Bischoff era, so that they could use it for Anderson as a fallback contingency if and when they didn't sign whomever it was? Could've sworn someone reported that here at the time.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted March 15, 2015 Awards Moderator Share Posted March 15, 2015 That Jericho return a few year ago, with all the apocalyptic 'end of the world' vignettes that led to absolutely nothing except him having a lighty-up jacket and not saying anything for a month. That was a pretty hyped lead in for what amounted to very little.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted March 16, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 16, 2015 What was the actual gimmick, though? I remember reading it was a whole new character, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Original Jericho was a rockstar, then he developed into "bitter anti-fans" Jericho, but what was the character that feuded with Punk? The jacket and silence didn't really clarify what it was. Unless it was meant to be an "evolved" gimmick?
drkopen
Shock master has to be worth a mention. Forgetting what actually happened they hyped up tugboat as there mystery partner to shock the world. They then stuck him in a storm trooper helmet covered in glitter and I think furs. Â Even if he didn't go are over tit it surely couldn't have lasted. Paid Members Murtz Posted March 16, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 16, 2015 Mordecai. I remember loving the promo vids they aired for quite a few weeks. New opponent for Taker I thought. His debut put all to bed though. Didn't he do some vampire gimmick after that?
darkship
There were definitely some interesting gimmick ideas floating around in the early 00s WWE but attached to people who were useless - Mordecai, O'Haire, Jones. Kizarny feels like another example but that gimmick was pretty much DOA (no, not Disciples of Apocalypse), at least in the PG era.

His valet was Ariel who had big knockers and a limp porn career post-WWE.
Paid Members air_raid Posted March 16, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted March 16, 2015 Kevin Thorn on the new ECW. His valet was Ariel who had big knockers and a limp porn career post-WWE. Â Bit harsh to describe TNA such.

Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted March 16, 2015 Moderators Share Posted March 16, 2015 The one that always comes to mind for me was Trytan in TNA. He got the big gabbo build up for weeks and then this lanky useless streak of piss came out and made zero impact. That was the first time I had an inkling that TNA might not quite live up to the great hope of being a competitor on the level of WWE one day. Â Another one that springs to mind is the Gobbeldygooker. Maybe if I watched it back as an adult it's obvious that it was always going to be some stupid novelty shit. But as a kid, my brother and I were super-hyped for some mystery badass to come along and wreck shit. Â Why some great badass would be hiding in a giant egg for a month, I'm not quite sure. I never questioned it at the time.
Whiskey_Jim
Is it too early to count The New Day in this? I was actually hoping for something akin to the Nation Of Domination when they banded them all together, instead we got some dancing and clapping and no actual character. Abe_Knuckleball_Schwartz
Seven is a good example pretty well done vignettes only for Vince Russo to suddenly drop it at the last minute and just turn Dustin into The American Nightmare. Â Berlyn is another good example, however that was toned down due to the awful Columbine High School massacre and I think his ring debit was delayed for a while.
