This surely deserves a thread of its own, right?

After six long years of negotiations, red tape, accusations of ducking, rumours of dodging drug tests, bickering over who makes the most millions...

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao (147 lbs)

Leo Santa Cruz vs Jose Cayetano (126 lbs)

Vasyl Lomachenko vs Gamalier Rodriguez (126 lbs)

Jesse Hart vs Mike Jimenez (168 lbs)

Christopher Pearson vs Said El Harrak (154 lbs)

Andrew Tabiti vs Anthony Caputo Smith (200 lbs)

Brad Solomon vs Adrian Granados (154 lbs)

It's finally happening. May 2nd 2015.

The biggest boxing match in years and years. The two biggest names in the sport. The two men once thought the best pound-for-pound in boxing (Mayweather still is). I said in the boxing thread but it really would've been a shame if this fight never happened. And with them both winding down their careers, the window was closing on chances to get a deal done.

I've always said I can't see past a Mayweather decision here. I could see Pacquiao coming out strong while Mayweather takes his time, but by the middle rounds I think Floyd will have taken over. By the end I think it'll be a wide points win for Mayweather. I hope it's more competitive though, it'd be great if this fight actually lived up to the hype and became a classic.

I know it's still nearly three months away but let's get talking about it. Post any updates, articles, hype videos, the 24/7 stuff when it comes out (can't wait for that), any interviews or stuff you find that might be of interest, whack it in here.

Definitely worth it's own thread, arguably the biggest boxing bout of our generation. It really is a crying shame though that this never happened 6 years ago, where it was near impossible to call which of the two were the best pound for pound fighter in the world. This is still going to be massive, but I think Money is better by some distance.

I think Mayweather's deliberately waited till now cause he'll think he has it in the bag. That'll be his downfall, my money's going on Pacman by decision. Fuck, I can't wait for this, praying that it lives up to the hype.

Better late than never and all that. A shame we never got this 5+ years ago when both men were on top form.

I hope I'm wrong, but it's hard not to imagine Mayweather winning and cementing his legacy as the best of his generation.

It's proper pro-wrestling, this. Flair v Rhodes. Can't wait.

Well if Pacquiao can't get the win we always have Khan to come in and take care of business... yeah, me neither.

Do you reckon this is the biggest fight since Lewis v Tyson? I've been racking my brain but other than Mayweather v De La Hoya, I can't think of anything that comes close.

It is the great challenge for either fighter in their career. Without doubt the biggest fight in my lifetime for me, surpasses Lewis vs Tyson and De La Hoya vs Mayweather in terms of what all of it combined brings to the table. You can look at the fight in a lot of ways, neither are as good as they were five years ago, one thing about Pacquiao is he is a smarter fighter now then he was back then,  Mayweather hasn't looked as impressive in his last couple of fights, but that can be down to a mental thing, he doesn't seem as quick, but he still has his timing on point and his defensive skills are unrivaled. Floyd has rarely faced a southpaw in his career, there's a good reason behind that and here he is facing one of the greatest fighters off all time who is a southpaw with crazy handspeed, accuracy and amazing footwork who throws punches from all angles and never stops working. The key for Mayweather is he physically is more imposing, can he impose himself in the middle, keep Pacquiao off, back him up and get his timing spot on where he is able to read and counter Pacquiao when he lunges in? I could be here all day and gives reasons why one wins and why the other wins, for me it's a very close fight to call, which makes it even more special, two fighters I have grew up watching since the early days, after all the stuff over the last few years, I never thought it would happen, thankfully everyone has finally got together, go it done and hopefully we get a fight that will be memorable. I'm taking Pac to win on points.

Surely it's even bigger than Lewis/Tyson?

Probably. If it had happened in 2009 or 2010 when demand to see the fight was at its peak and Pacquiao was beasting the likes of De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto, I think it'd definitely have been bigger than Lewis vs Tyson. Now I think it'll still be bigger but it's a bit of a closer race.

Lewis vs Tyson was ridiculously big at the time though. Way bigger than it had any right to be considering Lewis was finishing up and Tyson was pretty much done. I remember that fight just felt massive, despite the result not being in much question if you followed the sport. Casual fans seemed to still think it was a tossup though. I remember everyone where I worked was on about it and they were almost 50/50 on who they were picking, and everyone had a strong opinion why one guy would win.

Then you had the old on again-off again nature of the fight. It got pushed back from April to June. There was the insane press conference brawl that ended with Tyson threatening to fuck faggots 'til they loved him and biting a chunk out of Lewis' leg. The fight got moved from Vegas to Memphis.

Just madness. It was the first boxing fight I ever paid to watch.

But yeah, maybe it felt bigger because it was Lewis and it got a lot of play here in the papers and media. That could be skewing things but it was a monster fight.

Mayweather vs De La Hoya ended up outdoing Lewis vs Tyson in PPV numbers a few years later. And then Mayweather vs Canelo topped them both in 2013. But I don't think either of those fights had quite the same buzz as Lewis vs Tyson did in terms of capturing people's fascination. More people bought those fights but I don't think it reached that far outside the boxing bubble as far as getting people you'd never expect to talk about boxing like Lewis vs Tyson.

Middle-aged women at work were on about Lewis vs Tyson to me. My ex's nan (a fucking 70-odd year old Korean woman) asked me to record it for her, for fuck's sake! I've never known a fight like that.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao should be bigger really. It's certainly a better actual fight. Despite me thinking Mayweather wins relatively comfy, Pacquiao is still good enough to where you can't count him out of the fight. With Tyson literally all he had was the old 'puncher's chance'. He was a spent force by 2002. Plus Mayweather has become such a Box Office attraction that he can do astronomical numbers with the right opponent. And who is more right than Pacquiao? Someone boxing fans and casuals alike have been clamouring to see Floyd fight.

To fringe fans who don't follow boxing closely, this is probably still as big a deal as it was in 2009. It's only really boxing fans who really see that it's lost some of its sparkle. It's going to feel like an absolutely huge event come fight week.

I've rambled more than I planned. Bit of trivia though, while we're on the subject of Lewis vs Tyson. Pacquiao actually fought on the undercard of that fight back in '02. He wasn't a household name back then and was still a year off his first real breakthrough win over Marco Antinio Barrera. He knocked out Jorge Eliecer Julio in the second round.

Lewis vs Tyson was bigger in this country than Oscar vs Floyd. But in America it must have been quite close. The Hispanic audience might have made it a tad bigger than Lewis vs Tyson.

I would also suggest that Floyd vs Hatton was bigger in this country than Lewis vs Tyson. People forget that Lewis was never really accepted by America, and never really celebrated by England. The media never really got behind Lewis either. I remember some of the articles about him during the time.

Sorry to be picky Wand. But Oscar vs Floyd still holds the PPV buys record. Floyd vs Canelo came very close, but just fell short. I believe that Floyd vs Canelo is the most profitable though.
