The King of Old School
Been watching some old episodes of Primetime recently on the network and by other means. Â Got me wondering if a similar show could work today? Â Do away with superstars and main event and use those matches for this show instead. Â I'd have Byron Saxton presenting with a "panel" of Heyman, Edge & The Miz with a weekly special guest aswell. Â What would you do? Or is it a completely dated concept? Paid Members Kaz Hayashi Posted February 7, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted February 7, 2015 I think it could be great, but maybe not a full show. Maybe a recap show of raw/smackdown where they discuss matches and angles. Â Almost like a gimmick round table. Â Have 3-4 main stays (on a round table) bring in a couple of guests for each show and legend to discuss 'this week in WWE'... Building up to the next PPV. Â Based a bit on what they did on Raw, have a wrestler on for a bit chat, later in the show, bring in his opposition, bad mouth each other etc. It could be a way to start a bit of opposition too. Â As main stays, maybe Hayes, Cole, uncle Zeb (heel) and Renee.
King Pitcos
I'd have been all for it as a concept, but they do this kind of stuff on the network on the pre-shows and post-shows all the time and it's always boring. It was a lot more interesting to do it in the kayfabe era.
Paid Members Kaz Hayashi Posted February 7, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted February 7, 2015 Do you think it could be done in the right setting with the right pundits though Pit? I think the ones your referring to are shit, but not sure how much of that is due to who is on the screen.
King Pitcos
I think the lineup would make some difference, but not enough. From the names they've had on them already -- Flair, Booker, Heyman, Christian, Foley etc -- you'd think they'd be better. It's more a case of me being too jaded to care about recaps and dull panel opinions, I reckon. I was absolutely up for that kind of show before I saw the network's versions, though. Paid Members tiger_rick Posted February 7, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted February 7, 2015 Nah, it's not just you. Those panels are generally fucking awful. Â It could work if you got three or four guys who are really smart and can truly buy into what you are doing enough to believe it. No idea who they'd be. SpykeDudlei1
Sadly, I think this would fall into the same category as the Saturday Night Main Event scenario.  We can look back all misty-eyed at those shows because of (as Pit referred to) the kayfabe era and because those shows were unique in how they/the matches were presented.  SNME gave you matches you didn't see all the time or were continuations of/endings to feuds. Those things happen on a weekly or monthly basis now.  The same would apply to a Primetime Wrestling type show.  Looking back nostalgically is wonderful but trying to recreate it (or something like it) would just leave us feeling flat I believe.
