Ferguson (the place, not the man.)

So I'm sure most have watched Ferguson burning after the grand jury verdict about the killing of Michael Brown.

I just don't get it.. I honestly don't, and seem that I never will.

From my understanding, all the evidence was given to a jury of 12 people of Missouri? It was them who looks at all the facts and they came to the conclusion not to indict the officer. Surely that means there wasn't any cover up or anything.

The fact it was 12 people who agreed (they can't say if it was unanimous) that there was no cause for indictment and not the police/government then surely that's the purest and correct decision?

I think that's the part that's most baffling with all the rioting and people continuing to act like the police/government at fault with the decision. As they just provided all the evidence for the jury to look at. Yet we have buildings in flames, businesses which are in Ferguson. Just total mayhem and utterly reprehensible behaviour.

I can't get over it. Why burn your city to the ground, you have to live there. And surely this just makes everyone in authority just think you're exactly what you don't want them to think?

It's times like this I love going down the twitter hole and just reading everything, just amazing to see on both sides. I actually saw a woman's twitter where she just sent a tweet to every famous black person saying "if you don't like it, go back to Africa where you're from!" People can actually write that.. It's why I am constantly fascinated by Twitter and why people use it.

Social media is absolutely wonderful and great, but like the prosecutor said, it really had a negative impact on this case. People would just constantly use it to spread lies about the 'facts' and what not.

I've never really had any contact with the police in my life, I can't pretend to know what it's like to live a life where you're always distrusting of the police (though I do, like many on here, think they abuse their power.) and have to 'run serpentine' to school. My life is pretty much the exact opposite of that. I don't tend to think police are racist, I just think that most of them are arseholes who love getting off on any power they hold. When you add guns into the mix, then that just accentuates the arsehole power trip.

It's just... this verdict wasn't anything to do with the police, it was the purest verdict possible. As it was done by their peers. Who have no dog in the race, no reason to lie, just to follow the evidence.

Yet this?

From accounts Wilson shot a man with his hands up like 6 times, some some point blank range. Fucking inexcusable.

The guy was something like 6'5 and had been shot in the top of his head, which supports the eyewitness accounts that he was on his knees at the time.

Last I heard, the pathologists report supported this too.

When they release a statement contradicting photgraphic evidence you can be pretty sure it's a whitewash.

And what are the people of Ferguson supposed to do? They have no other recourse because the "proper" way failed hard.

Like the LA riots in the 90’s. The public disobedience here isn’t necessarily purely because of the this case, this is the trigger, ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’. For every high profile case that actually makes the news (Rodney King, Michael Brown) you have the day to day actions of the police that communities have to live with 24/7. It’s much easier & tidier for certain sections of the media to pretend that it’s an isolated incident but the people living there all have worryingly similar stories of police behaviour. It’s a shame it takes the (alleged) execution of an unarmed man to actually make it news worthy.

For all the issue we still have with racism in this country, it's almost impossible for us to understand just how divided and racially unequal parts of the US are.  Somewhere like Ferguson has barely moved on from segregation.  When an apparently racially motivated murder by a policeman can't even get as far as a trial... you can understand why that could ignite decades of anger.

Understand the frustration and the race issue in the US is incredibly complex but also agree with some of the points in the OP. Whatever your frustration, I can't comprehend taking it out by ruining busineses and properties in your community. How the fuck is that going to help anyone? All the images do is ensure mass indignation against the protesters.

Retaliation rarely creates sympathy in any situation.

You say it like the protestors have a common mind. Who's to say that people looting even share their POV?

Like Martin Luther King said 'A riot is the language of the unheard'. can absolutely empathise with people pushed to these extremes. Somehow I don't think an epetition or sternly worded letter to the local PD would garner much attention.

Perhaps the first time you could argue that hangers on attached themselves to the protest and got up to no good but after yesterday's decision, it's clearly an orchastrated riot.

A strongly worded letter might not gain attention but it wouldn't garner widespread condemnation either. It's like the London riots. They have a message and a point but rioting isn't the answer. It turns more people off.
