Bankrupt goalkeeper David James auctions football memorabilia

Former England goalkeeper David James is to auction hundreds of items of football memorabilia collected during his career.

James, who played for Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth, was declared bankrupt in May.

Among the items being sold through Kent-based auctioneer Hilco are 150 signed shirts, shorts and match balls.

Also being sold is James's customised Astra van and Raleigh Chopper bikes.

The 44-year-old won 53 England caps during a career that also saw spells at Watford, Bristol City and Bournemouth and is currently goalkeeper and manager of Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters FC.

Bids for his possessions, which also include exercise and DJ equipment, vinyl records, books and toys, are being accepted from 6 to 18 November.

Shirts including an England home kit signed by the team, and a bright pink Portsmouth goalkeeper's jersey, are expected to sell for upwards of £30-50 each.

If I'd have put my money on a footballer ending up skint and having to sell off his gear, he'd have been one of the last ones I'd have said. Seemed very well read, from what I seen of him.

And I thought he was being super shrewd by switching to an electric car all those years ago to save money. This will explain why he's currently playing in the Indian Super League with Ljunberg, Pires (swoon), Del Piero, Anelka and...err...Silvestre.

He modelled for Armani. He made £20m in his career from football alone, and I don't think that includes sponsorship, endorsements etc. Must be gutting to auction all of that off. I saw he is selling his goalkeeper jersey from when Pompey won the FA Cup final, heartbreaking. That has to be his greatest moment in football, surely?

Still, my sympathy went a little when I saw this bit:

Grow up, man!

He always comes across well read but I've got a suspicion he might be a bit of a Clarke Carlisle.

When he was at West Ham the rumour was that he was actually a really intelligent guy.  I went up to the training ground for a careers meeting thing once and he was sitting there reading some kind of philosophy book while the others were sitting around having lunch and chatting shit.  Apparently it was a common thing and he'd always have 'brainy' books with him in the hotels to relax the night before games.

Obviously reading books doesn't in itself make you intelligent, but I'd certainly describe him as 'well read'.
