Paid Members John Matrix Posted October 28, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 28, 2014 This place needs a good kick up the arse lately, far too much doom and gloom. Maybe it’s just symptomatic of society today, maybe we’re just a bunch of grumpy sods and need to snap out of it – whatever the reason, I want to try and bring some positivity back to the boards. Life is shit, it gets to us all at times and none of us knows what happens in the lives of other forum members when they click the red X or log out (especially me, I’ve never done either!) and how it impacts behaviour when we’re on here. But I hope something we all share in common are goals, ambitions and aspirations, we’ll all be striving for something actively, passively, it might even be on hold for a little while, but we’re nothing without hopes and dreams. So what are yours? Indulge yourself. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What do you want to be doing with your life? Have you made any plans to get the ball rolling? What would you do if you won the pools (lottery is such a cliché these days) and all the obstacles you face today were removed? I’ll gladly start, be a cock if I didn’t. Mrs Matrix and I are hoping to add to our brood in the next year or two – having left it relatively late to start a family in order to be financially secure beforehand, we’re keen to build it sooner rather than later. Similarly, I’m looking to start and develop my own business. Nothing mindblowing, just a bit of freelance design and creative work to earn some supplemental income so that Mrs Matrix can stay home and continue to be an incredible mother to our child/ren. The foundation for this has been finally seeking help for some of the issues I’ve been dealing with personally with support from a couple of diamonds on this very board. Steps I avoided taking for a long time have made a massive impact, opening my eyes and giving me the foundation I needed to build upon that I couldn’t have established alone. I still feel as though I have unfinished business to attend to in football, and have given some thought to starting up a kids team in order to do things from scratch without the politics that comes with dealing with adults, so generally there’s a lot I’d like to accomplish personally and professionally in the next 5 years. A few months ago, I couldn’t have fathomed any of it, so if you’re reading this and can’t see the wood for the trees right now, take note, it won’t always be that way as long as you can accept that ultimately, it’s you that needs to take the first step in changing things. So go on, don’t leave me hanging…
Slapnut
I lost my job yesterday. I know that's not exactly what you were hoping to see in this thread, but my head hadn't been in it for a while and I was almost hoping to get the sack. Now that I have I'm going to give myself a kick up the arse to give the acting thing a go properly. I haven't done anything with it for over a year and it's time to knuckle down and make something happen. I've had some headshots done and I'm sending them out to agents, so I'm hoping for some results in the next few weeks. 5 years time? I'm not even sure what I'll be doing in 5 minutes, so that's a difficult one. I'm hoping to have enough cash to go to New Zealand in 2017 for the Lions tour, if that counts. Refused
I'm also going to chime in with some bad news. Broke up with my girlfriend over the weekend after being together over 4 years. Everything has gone right down the shitter since leaving uni. Ideally, in 5 years time I will be dead. Or in a better job, away from my home town. Either will suit me fine. Loki
Off to a cracking start, this thread I do think change is the best cure - I've had a torrid couple of years work-wise, and looking back can see how that would effect even my posting on this forum. Stress is a powerful force. Now though I've started my own business and am working freelance, loving it, and loving life again. My long-term aim is to get into a start-up at the ground level, and make my million off selling it on at a later date. 10 years ago that seemed an impossible dream but now I can sort of see how it will happen! I also owe a great deal to a couple of guys on this board, one in particular who gave me sage advice and was someone I could talk to outside my "real world" support network, so this old place can definitely be a force for good (as well as bad, unfortunately). Sometimes you have to step back and realise that changing the one thing that's fucking with you, no matter how fundamental it is to your life, is the best thing in the long run. Good to hear you're in a positive place Matrix, you deserve it.
Paid Members PunkStep Posted October 28, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 28, 2014 Your plan is going swimmingly so far Matrix I'll add some good news. I have a new job! I've been working in Notting Hill (which is full of weird posh folk who insist on riding around on those poxy kids micro scooters) for the past couple of years, but I now have a job in The CITY!! (as in City of London, for those that hate it when there is no elaboration). More money, less travel time, less travel expenses, less responsibility, no more Underground (which means no more tube strikes for me and no more 'move to the back of the carriage' politics), back in an industry that I have plenty of experience in- it's a big win-win. Plus I've dreamed of being a right proper corporate City Boy since forever. Matrix, I'm going to read Total Recall to celebrate.
Loki
Total Recall is a very inspirational book. With hard work, brains, amazing genetics, a near 7 foot frame, a regular intake of performance enhancing drugs, a razor-sharp drive to succeed and an ambivalent morality, you really can achieve anything. Keith Houchen
My health is in shit street at the moment, but thankfully my metal health isn't. A year or so ago I doubt if I'd have had the fight for it but now I'm grateful for the wonderful support I have. Mrs H is doing a PhD but has still looked after me immensely, so my goal is to support her the best I can, enjoy the odd weekend away when we can, then sit back as she coins it in when she finishes in 2 years! Good to know things are up, Matrix and Loki.
Paid Members Thunderplex Posted October 28, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 28, 2014 Hopefully things will still be plodding along nicely. I'm in a good job with decent pay, happy family life, and apart from being a fat bastard, in good health, so all fine and dandy really! Best of luck to all those who are planning on making a change. I did it a couple of years ago, and it is hard, and it is frightening sometimes, but well worth it if you are in a rut.
Paid Members GlennCullen Posted November 3, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 3, 2014 Have recently been promoted from an IT Analyst role to a Finance Management one and start in two weeks, so excited for that. Lost 23 pounds of 'sympathy' weight and am back to looking like I did at uni. Fitness has improved exponentially also, so a win all round. Finished my second screenplay and am now working on a third, as well as continuing to develop a TV series, which has become a rewarding little hobby. Most importantly, our 5 month old girl is amazing me more and more each day as her personality develops and she learns to do new things. The time has flown by, but I'm loving it. POSITIVITY. Paid Members PunkStep Posted November 3, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 3, 2014 Good for you KJ. And as much as I liked Ron Swanson, Glenn Cullen is an even better avatar.

Paid Members WWFChilli Posted November 3, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 3, 2014 The play I'm in (Porno Chic) has sold out all five nights for it's November run with more performances next year and a tour of Brighton in May. I'm happy I finally got off my arse and doing something with acting. I really want to continue and build on this, should have done this years ago. Also, Love you Matrix, good luck starting and Fam and your aims
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted November 3, 2014 Awards Moderator Share Posted November 3, 2014 I've just started a postgraduate e-learning course which will hopefully result in a lot more career doors being open-able for me - ideally, by the end of it, I'll have both experience and the necessary qualification. I'm struggling to find time to fit it in between work, travelling up to visit the g/f, and weekly improv sessions and shows, but I'll certainly try. There y'are Matrix, that's a little bit of positivity for you!
Paid Members Callum1993 Posted November 3, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 3, 2014 I've just started my third year of Uni (Doing a B.A in history). Have just applied to do a PGCE once I finish my degree so fingers crossed I get in. It's also my 21st on Wednesday so life is good! Hopefully in five years I'll be well into my teaching career, will have my own house and maybe even married who knows? Hopefully by then Liverpool would have won a league title as well!
