NASHVILLE, Tenn. — WWE.com has learned Roman Reigns has been rushed to a Nashville, Tenn., hospital to undergo emergency surgery for an incarcerated hernia. Reigns had been in Nashville to promote tomorrow's Night of Champions event. His recovery time will be evaluated by the local surgeon and WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann following today's operation.

No word yet on how serious or how long he'll be out, but could mean some big changes ahead

It's a hernia.

He won't be out that long.

6-8 weeks, maybe. They'll be able to keep him in around the action.

I am surprised they broke the story like this, instead of making an angle out of his absence.

It wouldn't be the first time they'd pulled a hokey one on PPV.

And that was back when the PPV business had a pulse. Now, you're either subscribed or not subscribed.

Also, your weird if you're buying a PPV for Roman Reigns and his shit hair and crap trousers. Because Lesnar.

Fucking hell. Imagine if Ambrose shows up at the pay per view, takes his spot against Rollins and raises hell. I'll explode with delight.

Weird if you're buying a PPV for a match you've seen have a clean finish one week before.

If Reigns is pulled from the PPV maybe they'll add Rollins to the Orton Vs Jericho match. Since Jericho is leaving WWE after Sunday they could have Orton and Rollins kick the fuck out of Y2J to write him off TV.

He's off the pay-per-view. And its not a normal hernia operation either. Apparently he could be out for a really long time. It just got the breaking news update on the Observer site and everyone in WWE is panicing and everyone is being kept in the dark. Sounds canny bad.

Ambrose has finished filming on that movie so he is due back any time now.

Have Rollins come out at the end of the Orton/Jericho match 2 on 1 beat down, Dean makes the save, tells Rollins "let's finish what we started" and have an impromptu match/brawl ending in a double count out/DQ so that neither has lose, Rollins being Mr MITB needs to keep looking strong and can't have Dean lose on his first night back.

It is a shame for Roman but this time off could be good for him if he's only off TV for a little while. If he can get back in time for the Rumble (4 months down the line? Ish) then they can stick to the rumoured plan. Anything longer than that and they're struggling for a top babyface with Bryan still out indefinitely, and I can't see them pushing Ambrose to that level yet

A PPV missing an advertised babyface will still leave a lot of people disappointed. Not everyone is a middle aged bitterfuck like us lot.

This sounds really shit for Roman. Hopefully he'll be back for the Rumble and his big moment.

Awful news for him short term, but it will probably work out for the best long term if he can be back for the Rumble in good shape. A triumphant return could do wonders for him and stop his current cooling down. It also throws everything up in the air so hopefully someone (Ambrose) can benefit from this as well.

The intrigue on what direction they will go at the PPV will probably convince me to buy it now

UPDATE:

WWE.com has spoken with WWE physican Dr. Chris Amann to get the latest.

"I was in contact with both Roman and the surgeon who performed the operation in Nashville today. Roman had developed acute abdominal pain in his hotel room last night after his match," Dr. Amann told WWE.com. "This wasn't related to a specific injury that occurred in the ring. Roman has had a pre-existing hernia for some time, which unfortunately had become acutely painful, which led to him going to the emergency room in Nashville. He was found to have a large hernia that was unable to be reduced, which means pushed back into the abdominal cavity. As a result, it was necessary to perform an emergent operation to open up the hernia sac and try and push it back into the abdominal cavity."

"At the time of the surgery, surgeons found a loop of small intestine was caught in the hernia sac, which would account for the pain and discomfort that Roman was having earlier in the evening," Dr. Amann explained. "The surgeons released the hernia sac so the intestine could be pushed back into the abdominal cavity. Once they were satisfied blood supply had returned to the intestine after releasing the hernia, they went ahead and completed the procedure. A mesh was placed over where the hernia had occurred to prevent future occurrences."

Now that the surgery has gone well, the clear next thought was when will the WWE Universe be able to see the powerhouse back in action.

"Roman has been transferred to the recovery room and is doing quite well. The plan is to keep him overnight, give him IV antibiotics to prevent infection and make sure the intestinal function returns to normal before discharging him from the hospital. If everything goes well, that should be tomorrow," Dr. Amann said. "Most of the time, the recovery time for something like this in terms of returning to physical activity is between four and six weeks. This was a pretty significant hernia, so it will probably be closer to six weeks."

WWE.com also asked Dr. Amann to elaborate on how this hernia differs from sports hernias, which sports fans know often lands top athletes on the injured list.

"This is a completely different type of hernia than sports hernia," Dr. Amann said. "A sports hernia usually refers to a tear in the lower abdominal wall that attaches to the ligaments. That type of tear is typically occurs from repeated activity or sports. Roman had what’s called an inguinal hernia. It can sometimes come from sports, but sometimes people are born with these. It is treated differently than a sports hernia."

Hopefully it's not too long, but could definitely be a good thing creatively. He was getting a little over-exposed and the momentum was dying with him, whereas Ambrose had become white-hot. He'll come back with the crowd behind him more than they currently are, as everyone else suggests a Rumble win would be an ideal comeback.

They probably knew about this before Monday, right? Because it now explains the bizarre clean win over Rollins.

Edit: oh, just a normal six week hernia lay-off then. Panic over, but a nice break to give him a bit of momentum for when he returns
