Beginner's Guide to the UK

Shane O' Mac Version 2

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

After spending the last 24 years of my life in my little Australian bubble, I'm moving over to London next month to start a teaching job. Given that I've never been anywhere and really have a limited grasp on what life is like over there, any advice or hints would be much appreciated. What does a first time traveller have to know about the UK, particularly if moving there for a longer term stay? Right now my contract will be for one teaching year, but because I'll be on an ancestry visa, I may extend my stay longer if I'm really loving it.

Also, I'll be able to post on here on more appropriate times and actually contribute better to discussion- although I certainly won't be spending all my time on here between working and travelling. What are some must-see spots in UK/Europe?

Over to you, gentlemen (and ladies, if Kook or Monkee read this).

:)

One of the best pieces of advice I can give anyone with a limited budget in London is, when getting a Travelcard on Oyster, only get one from Zones 2-4. Zone 1 is how they fuck you, as it drives up the cost something chronic.

Say you get a weekly Travelcard Z2-4, that's

Thanks guys, I'll be reliant on public transport so that helps a lot.

Not sure on specifics yet, I find out more tonight (the opportunity came up yesterday), but I'll be working in the northern area of London, first as a supply teacher but with guaranteed days. Following that, I pick a school I like to sign a long term contract with. I'll be living in a share house with other Aussie teachers, but I'm unsure if I want to do that the entire time I'm there.

North London is good. You'll like it. I hate it. But I'm from here.

I'm from north London too, and I don't hate it. Well, not as much as I used to.

You're from nicer North London, though. Riot is from Toiletenham.

Truth.

I mean, lucky you if you're going to be living somewhere like Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Highgate or Hampstead. I'd like to live in one of those places. If you're going to be in Tottenham just avoid the Farm at night. You'll be fine.

I don't live anywhere as nice as those. I'm from just round the corner from you, Riot, in Manor House/Harringay.
