GAA on Sky Sports

This weekend Sky Sports are going to be showing live GAA for the first time. Its been a major talking point over here. Some ppl saying its the best thing to ever happen for GAA others saying its getting into bed with the devil and will ruin the games.

My question is has anybody on here even noticed it being advertised and will anybody be watching it?

Does seem to be getting the big promotional push via TV adverts. I'll certainly be watching.

I've got the feeling Sky will be losing some football coverage soon. Seem to be bidding for all of these lesser known sports (over here. GAA is massive in Ireland). Throwing their money into Netball FFS!

Yep they are losing some football- BT won (by won, I mean spunked a ridiculous amount of money to even outbid the free-spending Sky) the Champions League rights which kicks in from 2015 I think.

I've certainly noticed a lot of adverts for it but I'm in Dublin so I suppose you'd expect that. On the surface of it I don't really like the idea of it. It's an amateur and should remain so. The sport should be run for the benefit of the local communities and I don't see how denying viewing access to a whole load of people who can't afford or choose not to buy Sky achieves that. I know there's the argument that the money can be ploughed back into GAA but given none of the players get paid is this just greed? If popularity grows out of ireland and the clubs and players see the size of the contract growing there be a may be a push for professionalism, which would be very sad indeed.

Have Sky announced who's fronting their coverage yet?I'd hazard a guess that Niall Quinn will be involved, which probably isn't the best way to introduce GAA to a new market.

I've heard this said a few times over here, but I thought the situation was that the games going to be shown on Sky were games that weren't going to be covered on RTE anyway? They are sharing the coverage rights, aren't they?

Rachel Wyse from Sky Sports News and Super League pundit Brian Carney are the presenters

Jamsie O'Connor and Nicky English will commentate on the Hurling

Peter Canavan and Paul Earley will commentate on the football

Dave McIntyre and Mike Finnerty will commentate on both sports

I also assumed all the games will still be on RTE, and the SKY deal is just to serve the new UK market. Can't see how it's a bad thing at all, TBH.
