A false report from earlier in the week was cleared up yesterday, but it seems like he's genuinely passed away. Horrible shame if true.

The Wall Street Journal are reporting it, as are many other trustworthy sources.

Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan

He was brilliant in pretty much everything he was in; Boogie Nights being one my favourite roles of his. Sad stuff.

It's being reported that it was a drug overdose. He was in rehab for heroin abuse last year. Sadly, if the rumours are true, it looks like he (like so many others) was done in by pills. Graduating from pain pills to heroin is not uncommon.

It's such a shame. 23 years sober and then a relapse that takes you to the grave.

From a Gawker article last year...

...The 45-year-old has always been candid about his struggles with drugs and alcohol, but spent the last 23 years sober. In that time he's had a hand in a multitude of critically acclaimed films, and he won the Academy Award for best actor in 2006 for his work in Capote.

Hoffman told TMZ that he began abusing prescription pills last year. That escalated to heroin use earlier this month, at which point he says he realized he had a problem. Hoffman says he only snorted heroin for about a week before he checked himself into an East Coast detox facility on May 14...

Such a shame, he was one of those actors who could do both very serious roles, through to his comedy roles in Along Cam Polly where he IMO played the faded 80's film star brilliantly.

Weirdly enough myself and the other half were just watch Catching Fire this afternoon and she remarked how good he would be in the final 2 films (they are splitting the final book over 2 films)

It has been confirmed that he was found dead with a syringe in his arm. So, he had moved on to injecting.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/02/...EA110IY20140202

...A police spokesman said investigators found Hoffman with a syringe in his arm and recovered two small plastic bags in the apartment containing a substance suspected of being heroin. A police department source earlier told Reuters that Hoffman had died of an apparent drug overdose...

Real shame, loved him in pretty much everything I saw him in from Flawless through to Twister, MI III, Synedoche, NY, The Boat That Rocked and so on. Only dawned on me he was the straightlaced guy in Patch Adams when they showed clips on the news

RIP
