Paid Members Thunderplex Posted August 15, 2013 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 15, 2013 Congratulations on being gay? That doesn't sound right. Â What is the proper response to someone coming out though? Supposing you feel you should acknowledge it, what phrasing do you use? Â "I'm so happy for you that you're gay" "Oh, right." "I always thought you were" "That's very nice for you" Â "Congratulations on being a black, gay version of me."? Â Oh, and sorry about the Orlando Bloom thing, not the greatest with names at the best of times!
Vamp
Didn't that gay basketball player get congratulated by all sorts of people? Its congratulating someone for having the courage to come out. Â As long as the 'E don't do another Billy and chuck. I'll never understand how they managed to go through with a booking plan that managed to throw away all of the good publicity they had. The wedding did have that admittedly awesome "its Eric Bischoff!" moment but the rest of it was just like someone had realised that they were getting good coverage and thought "fuck, we don't want people to like us! We're edgy!"
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted August 15, 2013 Moderators Share Posted August 15, 2013 Kind of an aside, but this was Bret Easton Ellis's reaction to the basketball player thing where he talks about congratulating and consoling celebrity gays for coming out. Â There's some interesting food for thought in there.
Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted August 15, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted August 15, 2013 Darren Young is so shit as well. I bet he's had the gay card in the back of his rhinestone encrusted flared trousers in case rumours of his sacking started. There's no chance they are sacking him now. WWE have had gay employees for years. Apart from the most sickening practical jokes and horrid insults, WWE doesn't seem to mind hiring gay people. I'm stunned nobody has came out yet. Patterson is universally known as being a homosexual (even being reported in lawsuits for touching him young lads and stuff). Wouldn't it have been great publicity if he'd have came out years ago? WWF/WWE's most powerful brain trust being gay would have attracted more attention. Especially during the times WWE was taking a public battering for their questionable TV. The whole Kanyon stuff was really embarrassing on everyones part. Kanyon was going for publicity and probably didn't believe half of what he was saying. And WWE sent out Ric Flair to defend the company and he made them look like total dipshits by not knowing what he was talking about. Â Can't wait for the "Justin Fashanu" chants when they come to Britain.
King Pitcos
Just watched the interview. It is such an obvious contrived setup, but it's a novel way to get people discussing WWE before SummerSlam.
Whiskey_Jim
I'm actually pretty angry about all of this, him being gay shouldn't make any difference to anything. I disagree with Ian though, I actually quite rate him.
d-d-d-dAz
You're angry about what? Â The fact he's come out or the fact that its been met so positively. Â Don't be so wet, just because most of the Western intelligencia have rightfully rejected homophobia, its still rife in loads of different areas of public life and things like this are still necessary and still positive. There's nothing more intrinsically homophobic, or at least not explicitly gay friendly, then modern sports. Having a positive role model is important. Â I think it's all been handled rather well, down to the tasteful piece on WWE.com.
King Pitcos
That Brett Easton Ellis piece was very interesting. Â Darren Young is doing a Be A Star appearance at a school today. That was good timing.
Mr Butternut Squash
Yeah thanks for that link. Such a good read it almost makes me want to give American Psycho another try.

d-d-d-dAz
Yes, but unfortunately a whole heap of people don't have such progressive views and these sort of 'flagpole' moments are still massive factors in normalising life choices, and encouraging tolerant attitudes. Â If, because a small percentage of us have given social liberalism the thumbs up, we decide these stories shouldn't be reported, it does nothing but allow us all to slap ourselves on the back. Nothing changes. Â The status quo remains. Â Unless you think tolerance has won over the world, that's a very bad thing.

Metallica
Just watched the interview. It is such an obvious contrived setup, but it's a novel way to get people discussing WWE before SummerSlam. Â It definitely was. Â How often would Darren Young get stopped by TMZ? Â And the big topic they want to talk about is gays in wrestling. Â And the guy just happens to have a series of appropriate follow up questions. Quite transparent.
Paid Members Surf Digby Posted August 16, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted August 16, 2013 Just a good job JR isn't commentating anymore, always seemed like he enjoyed giving sly digs to certain wrestlers Taz wasn't exactly subtle about Shannon Moore either. Rampage
WWE seem to be all over this, which is good. Â I just hope it won't be all over Raw stating that he's gay, they should now show that it doesn't make a difference for someone to be open about their sexuality.
