Smackdown Discussion Thread

Having all the tag teams on one show and all the women on the other would rob both brands of key ingredients in putting together a varied card on any given night.

Tag team wrestling in particular has been a staple of pro wrestling for decades, so they can't just switch to a format of all singles matches on SmackDown or Raw just to give the other show an exclusive to brag about.

There are more constructive and satisfying means of distinguishing between the two brands than simply reducing each of their options in contrasting ways.

Exactly. Wrestling's big issue the last few years has been that it's fucking boring, and taking variety out of it wont help that. Nobody is going to sit through a duller than ever three hour Raw and be excited by it simply because all the tag teams are on Smackdown. People making those kind of suggestions wouldn't even like it themselves if it happened once they saw how limiting it is. They just don't think these things through at all.

Then what do you do on the PPV?

In an ideal world they wouldn't do the two PPVs thing a month per brand (assuming it happens as rumoured) and then you appreciate the actual tag teams on show rather than a tag match that probably means nothing on a show without any tag belts.

There are always tag matches on the shows made up of non tag teams, if the tag teams were all on Raw then you wouldn't need many tag matches on Smackdown anyway given its an hour and a half show. Your US, World Title & Cruiserweights (had that been on Smackdown) would easily cover the duration of the show. Then whatever programme you have going on would have a tag team made up of faces/heels anyway (e.g. Ryder/Zayn vs Miz/Owens).

It's not inconceivable that a show without tag teams, couldn't still have tag team action. Recently on RAW, Sheamus teamed with Rusev against Ryder and Ziggler because Ryder is going after the US Title. Sheamus and Ziggler were thrown in it for no good reason. Just throwing a tag team match together is standard with WWE. So SmackDown, even if it didn't have one genuine tag team, would still have ample opportunity to have tag team matches.

The women division is slightly more complicated because, unless you have Santino Marella available, you can't just throw a women's match out there without women. But if they were all going to be on one brand, then drafting any of them takes away any suspense. Oh look RAW drafted a woman - well yeah, all women are on RAW. The only thing I could come up with to work round that is fuck Superstars or Main Event off and make them a women's exclusive show.

But would any of those ad-hoc tag matches have a place on their brand's pay-per-views, or would we get three straight hours of singles matches? (Or however much of those three hours is devoted to wrestling at least.)

They probably wouldn't get on the pay-per-view but would that be any different to the current shows anyway - even with tag teams at their disposal.

The vast majority of their tag team bouts on PPV this year have either been for the Tag Team Titles (which RAW has, so SmackDown couldn't do anyway) or between two teams of women (which if RAW had all tag teams and SmackDown had the women then they could still do). The exceptions, on the main shows, are;

Royal Rumble n/a

Big Show, Kane & Ryback v Wyatt Family (Fastlane)

League of Nations v New Day (Wrestlemania)

Vaudevillans v Enzo & Cass (Payback)

Gallows & Anderson v Uso's (Extreme Rules)

Money in the Bank n/a

So not having a standard tag team match, wouldn't be that out of the question.

By the way I'm not saying I'd go for that route. Just saying that even not having genuine tag teams on a certain show, doesn't mean they can't have tag team matches.

Furthermore, if you've got ten or twelve tag teams on the same show, those shows are going to be extremely tag match heavy. A live event has what, two tag matches on? And last week they had the following teams:

New Day

Wyatt Family

Dudleys

Usos

Lucha Dragons

Breezango

Golden truth

Ascension

Social Outcasts

Vaudevillains

Enzo & Cass

Gallows & Anderson

Primo & Epico

What kind of lunatic would isolate them on one show? Zero upside to it.

How many of them are serious tag teams though? Half of them are jobbers that don't even make either show. Social Outcasts aren't even a tag team, same with Wyatts, same with Lucha Dragons. Cut out all the crap and your only left with maybe six tag teams at best that are title worthy.

To be fair though, New Day aren't a tag team in the traditional sense of the term. They're a trio just like the Outcasts and Wyatts.

Except the IC and US titles though, it makes perfect sense in having these exclusive to their respective brand.

But I agree otherwise. What do the tag teams and women on SD have to aim for?
