Game Of Thrones

Voted number 1? Yes.

What's it about?

Based of the best selling fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, this show is an HBO mega smash hit. It's only been airing for 3 seasons but it has penetrated pop culture in a way no other show has done since Lost and the viewing figures are firmly on their way to overtaking The Sopranos. With it's huge budget, massive cast of memorable characters, complex plots filled with violence, sex and political backstabbing it seems like everyone is talking about Game Of Thrones these days. It helps that it has had some wild plot twists that really get people talking. Based in the fictional land of Westeros, various ruling families and political players fight and manipulate their way to try and hold the Iron Throne.

What does PowerButchi say?

"Oz has been beaten by Game of Thrones? You are all a bunch of fucking dickheads."

But what do you say?

"Low down on the list purely because of the noob status of being 3 seasons in to a probable 8. The closest show since Lost to really bedding itself into popular culture, which is pretty crazy considering it's rife with extraordinary violence, and sexposition scenes where one girl fingers another right up the arse."

Wait, what? Really?

I've never, ever watched Game of Thrones as I don't really 'do' fantasy. But, I remember there was a blonde bird in it, and I caught a scene when flicking channels where she was crying as Jason Momoa did her from behind. She was quite cute. If the above is true, well, I may just have to give it a go. It sounds like porn. But with plausible deniability.

I hate the comparison between Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, they are COMPLETELY different.

Same genre, though. It's like saying a Spider-Man film is similar to a Batman one. To someone who is a casual fan, they are. To a more involved fan, they aren't.

Daz, just stick Babestation on whilst reading Lord Of The Rings, that's Game Of Thrones.

One of the babestation girls was in Game of Thrones. I forget her name, indian bird.

There isn;t that much fantasy stuff in GoT, only the Dragons, White Walkers and maybe one or two other things. It's more like Dallas or War and Peace or something than Lord of the Rings.

Game Of Thrones shouldn't be near the top 10. It's great an' all, and I love the books too, but it's not on the same level as The Wire or The Sopranos say. I always think of it as quite trashy and a bit of a soap opera but with better acting and a more violent/serious tone. It's not exactly high art is it?

Neither are Lost and 24, though. They're glossy, gimmicky network fare - enjoyable for what they are (dependant on your tastes), but neither are comparable as 'art' to those two you've mentioned, or noticably superior in critical terms to Game of Thrones. Besides, I don't think this list has really been predicated on that wanky, high falutin Guardian-esque criteria - Neighbours and Cell Block H are in, for crying out loud. Not that I'm complaining about that - I voted for fun nonsense like Sharpe and Quincy. Lists like this are always going to be subjective. Having said that, the cream has generally risen to the top in the list, as I think will be borne out by the top 3.

"You have to respect the chemistry."

Breaking Bad

Voted number 1? Yes.

What's it about?

Bryan Cranston has created a legendary performance as Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer who turns to a life of crime. Along with former student Jesse Pinkman, Walter starts cooking meth to pay for his medical bills and his families future. This is a show where the character truly go on a journey and change throughout as the horror and devastation of Walt's criminal lifestyle sucks in and destroys everything around him. With a wonderful supporting cast, unique location and creative direction, this show has won countless awards.

What do you say?

"The gradual double turn of Walt- from a character who so enviably uses tragedy to rally against his own pathetic passivity to a maniacal psychopath with goals so warped they dispense with sentimentality altogther-and Jessie- from an irritating punk to a skilled-but-flawed, trapped deeply human punk, is executed too masterfully to be described using a cliched wrestling analogy. BBad's most amazing quality is, having watched the show, reading a brief synopsis of all the sheer madness that ensued even the feintest bit of ridiculousness or unbelievability is completely overrideen by the excitement, tension and, well, drama. I am more excited for this next, final season than for any other work of entertainment in my life."

"High quality and addictive. It was a long wait between seeing Season Two on fiver/five usa and being able to see season three on Netflix. Can be a bit slow at times but at the end of each episode you can’t wait to see the next one."

"How it got renewed after season 1 i don't know because it was largely uneventful but stick with it and you get one of the best tv shows around. I'd maybe place it higher but i hate one of the main characters (Skylar) and for large parts really really get irritated by Walter. "

"One of the only show in the last 5 years I've had to watch, I love it for the same reasons everybody else does."

"Do I really need to write a blurb? Nope didn't think so, simply by watching it you'll know why it's this high on my list"

"Breaking Bad's true genius, and something unique, is how the show gradually turned its own protagonist into the antagonist."

" In all honesty I've only ever seen the first season, but I absolutely adored it. So much so I class it as one of my favourite shows based on that alone. I've every intention of getting round to the rest of it, it's simply dedicating the time to it. A really interesting, unique concept for a show and fascinating story. Cranston is incredible."

"The most HBO show not on HBO. Unlike many other top dramas, Breaking Bad doesn't have an endless cast or the traditional introduction of tonnes of new characters with each series, instead it focuses on several main characters (mostly Walter and Jesse), which I think is brilliant as you gain a much greater understanding of each character and a more developed background. You get to a point where you think you know how somebody will react to a certain situation because you think you know them so well. Stephen Bauer and Danny Trejo make brilliant cameo appearances. Walter White is probably the best TV character around today. He is the ultimate family man, doing everything he can to provide and seeing him start from the naive straight-laced man at the beginning to how his copes with the experiences he ends up having to go through makes the show. Walter has similarities to Tony Soprano, albeit with greater morals (though some would argue that) and Jesse is Walter's Christopher Moltisanti- someone who at first seems young, clueless and over-confident but really blossoms as time goes by. Saul Goodman is the best bent lawyer I've seen since Sean Penn in Carlito's Way and rumours are buzzing that he could have his own spin-off, which normally doesn't work well but I think this could be an exception. Still got half a series to go until the conclusion of the show, but it's already cemented itself as one of the best."

"I'm new to this and only up to series 2. It is so well put together its not often you feel you're really going through it with the main characters. I still can't believe Walter played Malcolm in the Middle's dad. By the time I'm up to speed with it it'll probably rank higher!"

"Has there ever been a more thrilling character arc in the history of television than that of Walter White? White’s transformation from tragic underachieving chemistry teacher into a murderous drug overlord is possibly the darkest and most disturbing thing ever seen on TV. Completely unpredictable and shocking, it is a show that continually amazes and I absolutely cannot wait to see it to it’s no doubt grim conclusion."

"The fact that there's still 8 episodes left & we've not seen the finale yet is the only thing keeping this from the top spot. Superb acting & writing that keep you hanging for next episode without resorting to cliched 'cliffhangers'. The only thing that could fuck this up would be the ending being 'all a dream'."

"Bryan Cranston puts in the best TV performance since John Hurt as Caligula"

The winner and runner-up will be posted together tomorrow afternoon! (although I'm sure you've all guessed what they will be)
