Soon we'll have to contact our ISP's to choose to opt in for porn. Do we think this a good idea & will help protect kids from viewing adult content? Do we trust this (or successive) governments to only block porn & not to censor certain political/news/blogs that they might not want the public to see? Â Given that budgets for child welfare have been slashed. youth centres & libraries are being closed and we've got families eating out of food banks I remain (unsurprisingly) cynical that this is about what's best for the kids. It's all rape, she says, basically because she says so, and she doesn't like it. Recently, she stated that she didn't think that women who get work done on themselves for porn, and dress the way they do for porn, should be mocked because they're adults with their own choices, and immediately followed that by saying the 90% of women were coerced into porno. In a confusing and ironic twist, she posted that she has personal issues of her own (I know, on Tumblr. Unheard of), and she blows off steam with lolicon. I don't want to have to actively say I want to receive pornography, the internet being something of an uncontrollable free for all is the only good thing about living in the 21st century. I don't want to sound selfish but I don't have or want kids and I have no desire as a responsible adult who should be able to enjoy anything legal as I see fit to live in a government dictated censored safety zone. If we're all being adults about this, do we really think that unfettered access to the grimmest, most violent legal porn is a good way for an adolescent male growing up to form opinions on sexuality and women? Â I know this'll sound very "'twere better in my day", but I grew up with the odd hairy snatch in Razzle. It was still a big thing to see a woman naked, and the only hardcore porn I ever came across before the age of 18 was hugely aspirational, if you know what I mean. Some girl and some guy would be having a right good time. Â Now, the sort of thing I see on the internet nowadays, I'm not even that convinced it's good for me now that I'm a 30 something adult. What it would have done to me as an impressionable 13 year old, I shudder to think. I know my sexual fantasies and predilections as an adult are based on things I read, or saw, or happened to me in my formative teenage years. If I'd been looking up lolicon, watching hardcore submissive porn and seeing endless trimmed or non-existent pubic hair, I'm not sure what my early relationships with actual girls would be like. Â If, as an adult, me having to once opt-in to porn means potentially a lot of kids not having access to it, then frankly I think it's a small price to pay. It's not actually stopping anyone from looking at the stuff, but in theory it means that it's harder to stumble upon and allows parents greater control over what their kids can access. Â I say in theory because in practice it'll be easy to get round, I'm sure. Â Edit: what Loki said. I'm of the opinion that unrestricted access to porn does more harm than good, long term. I know it's utterly warped my view of women, and since realising how atrociously I view women because of it (although probably not just it), I've tried to stay off the stuff. (I've failed, full disclosure, but I'm trying). My concerns are that we're setting a precedent for the Government to restrict legal material online & dictate what's suitable for adults to view. When Wikileaks published the list of sites banned by the Australian government I believe it included blogs, businesses & sites completely unrelated to illegal porn. Â It's not like we don't have censorship in this country already, is it? I mean, I have to be over 18 to be able to buy a copy of The Expendables on DVD, and yet the sky hasn't fallen in. Having a 9 o'clock watershed on tv didn't lead to the end of the free press in this country. Â We're talking about specifically opting in or out of adult content. It's not 90 day detention, or the removal of jury trial. There's been far, far worse infringements on our liberty in this country in recent years than having to put your hands up to liking to jerk off to grot on the internet.
