A 40 year old posted this;

She's someone I used to hang out with about ten years ago or more. She's always posted this kind of shit. I doubt anyone has ever suggested to her that heavy metal is "not music", but if you listened to her you'd think it was an everyday occurrence.

This opinion drives me insane. Metal can be just as lazy/shit/manufactured as any other genre of music.

There's also those similar posts where they compare the lyrics of a metal song to a pop song. It'll always be some inspirational, #PMA Parkway Drive song compared to something like 'Stupid Hoe' by Nicki Minaj. It works both ways though, as you can compare most of Taylor Swift's back catalog to 'Cyanide' by Deathstars and you'll get the same result.

I had a conversation with one of the metalhead crowd at the pub a while back. Someone had said they thought Nickelback get a bad rap, I said no, they're awful.

Token metalhead stepped in with, "yeah, if you had to listen to either them or One Direction, you'd listen to Nickelback". Right, yeah, of course, if I'm ever in that extremely unlikely predicament, that completely invalidates my point. But of course you don't like One Direction. You're not supposed to. They're not for you. Comparing metal to "pop music" is completely pointless.

Similarly, there were always a few back when I DJ'd metal nights who'd complain about "commercial" music. Yep, nothing commercial at all about your Metallica T-shirt, Iron Maiden belt buckle, Anthrax and Slayer patches, etc. etc. etc.. The most widely merchandised genre of music there is, and you want to bitch about "commercialism".

There's a bloke I'm friends with on Facebook who did this with Stormzy lyrics after Glastonbury. And I just wanted to say, "mate, you've been posting every day for years about how great the Beach Boys are. I could post the lyrics to "Vegetables" and it wouldn't somehow invalidate their entire body of work.

It’s a teenage mind set. Pretty sure most people were snobby about their music tastes when they were a teen. I 100% was, especially with hip hop.

With my Rawkus t-shirt, backpack and mixtapes, I hated the “jiggy” shit, whereas now I don’t care what people think, I can say that Get Rich Or Die Trying by 50 Cent is an incredible album.

Metal/punk can be very similar. Massive amount of “gatekeepers” that never grew out of their teens.

Someone at work said the exact same thing to me the other week. He thinks that in a few years people will realise how wrong they were about Nickelback and how incredibly underappreciated they were.

He's from Stoke though, so I let him down gently.
